§6.18.1ὀλίγαις δʼ ὕστερον ἡμέραις πρέσβεις ἀπὸ τοῦ κοινοῦ τῶν Λατίνων ἧκον ὡς αὐτοὺς ἐξ ἁπασῶν τῶν πόλεων ἐπιλεχθέντες οἱ τὴν ἐναντίαν ἔχοντες περὶ τοῦ πολέμου γνώμην, ἱκετηρίας καὶ στέμματα προεχόμενοι.
A few days later, ambassadors from the league of the Latins came to them, having been chosen from all the cities, being those who held the opposite opinion concerning the war, holding out the olive branches and fillets of suppliants.
οὗτοι παραχθέντες ἐπὶ τὴν βουλήν, τὴν μὲν ἀρχὴν τοῦ πολέμου τοὺς δυναστεύοντας ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν ἀπέφαινον αἰτίους· τὸ δὲ πλῆθος ἓν μόνον τοῦτο ἁμαρτεῖν ἔλεγον, ὅτι πονηροῖς ἐπείσθη δημαγωγοῖς ἴδια κέρδη παρεσκευασμένοις. §6.18.2ταύτης δὲ τῆς ἀπάτης, ἐν ᾗ τὸ πλεῖον ἀνάγκης μέρος ἦν, οὐ μεμπτὰς τετικέναι δίκας ἑκάστην πόλιν ἔλεγον τῆς κρατίστης νεότητος ἀναιρεθείσης, ὥστε μὴ ῥᾴδιον εἶναι πένθους καθαρὰν εὑρεῖν οἰκίαν, ἠξίουν τʼ αὐτοὺς παραλαβεῖν σφᾶς ἥκοντας οὔτε περὶ τῆς ἀρχῆς ἔτι διαφερομένους οὔτε περὶ τῶν ἴσων φιλονεικοῦντας συμμάχους τε καὶ ὑπηκόους ἅπαντα τὸν λοιπὸν χρόνον ἐσομένους, καὶ πᾶν ὅσον ὁ δαίμων ἀφείλετο τοῦ Λατίνων ἀξιώματος, §6.18.3τοῦτο τῇ Ῥωμαίων προσθήσοντας εὐποτμίᾳ.
These men, having been introduced to the senate, declared in the first place that the men of power in the cities were to blame for the beginning of the war; but they said that the multitude had committed only this one error, that they had been persuaded by wicked demagogues who had sought their own private gains. For this deception, in which compulsion had the greater share, they said that each city had paid no light penalty, since the best of their youth had been destroyed, so that it was not easy to find a house free from mourning; and they begged them to receive them, who had come neither disputing any longer about supremacy nor contending about equal rights, but intending to be allies and subjects for all the remaining time, and that whatever dignity the deity had taken away from the Latins, they would add this to the good fortune of the Romans.
τελευτῶντες δὲ τοῦ λόγου συγγένειαν ἐπεκαλοῦντο καὶ συμμαχιῶν ἀπροφασίστων ποτὲ γενομένων ἀνεμίμνησκον καὶ συμφορὰς ἀνέκλαιον τὰς καταληψομένας τοὺς μηδὲν ἡμαρτηκότας, οἳ μακρῷ πλείους ἦσαν τῶν ἡμαρτηκότων, ὀδυρόμενοι παρʼ ἕκαστα καὶ τῶν γονάτων ἁπτόμενοι πάσης τῆς γερουσίας καὶ τὰς ἱκετηρίας παρὰ τοῖς ποσὶ τοῦ Ποστομίου τιθέντες· ὥστε παθεῖν τι πρὸς τὰ δάκρυα καὶ τὰς δεήσεις αὐτῶν τὸ συνέδριον ἅπαν.
Finally, ending their speech, they appealed to their kinship, reminded them of the unhesitating alliances once made, and wept over the misfortunes that were about to overtake those who had done no wrong, who were by far more numerous than those who had erred, wailing at every point, touching the knees of the whole senate, and placing their suppliant branches at the feet of Postumius; so that the entire senate was deeply moved by their tears and entreaties.
