§5.63.1παρασκευαζόμενοι δὲ τὰ εἰς τὸν πόλεμον ἐπιτήδεια καὶ τὰς δυνάμεις ἀρξάμενοι καταγράφειν, εἰς πολλὴν ἐνέπιπτον ἀμηχανίαν, οὐ τὴν αὐτὴν ἁπάντων προθυμίαν εἰς τὰ ἔργα παρεχομένων.
And as they were preparing the things necessary for the war and had begun to enlist the forces, they fell into great difficulty, as all did not display the same eagerness for the tasks.
οἱ γὰρ ἐνδεεῖς βίου καὶ μάλιστα οἱ τὰ χρέα τοῖς συμβαλοῦσι διαλῦσαι οὐ δυνάμενοι πολλοὶ σφόδρα ὄντες οὐχ ὑπήκουον ἐπὶ τὰ ὅπλα καλούμενοι οὐδʼ ἐβούλοντο κοινωνεῖν οὐδενὸς ἔργου τοῖς πατρικίοις, εἰ μὴ ψηψίσαιντο αὐτοῖς χρεῶν ἄφεσιν·
For those who were in want of livelihood, and especially those who were unable to pay off their debts to their creditors, being very numerous, did not obey when called to arms, nor did they wish to share in any undertaking with the patricians, unless they should vote them a remission of debts.
ἀλλὰ καὶ καταλείψειν τινὲς αὐτῶν τὴν πόλιν ἔλεγον καὶ παρεκελεύοντο ἀλλήλοις μὴ φιλοχωρεῖν πόλει μηδενὸς αὐτοῖς ἀγαθοῦ μεταδιδούσῃ.
Indeed, some of them even said they would abandon the city, and exhorted one another not to cling to a city that gave them no share of any good.
§5.63.2τέως μὲν οὖν παρακαλεῖν αὐτοὺς οἱ πατρίκιοι καὶ μεταπείθειν ἐπειρῶντο, ἐπεὶ δʼ οὐθὲν ἐγίνοντο μετριώτεροι πρὸς τὰς παρακλήσεις, οὕτω δὴ συνελθόντες εἰς τὸ βουλευτήριον ἐσκόπουν, τίς εὐπρεπεστέρα λύσις ἔσται τῆς κατεχούσης τὴν πόλιν ταραχῆς.
For a time, then, the patricians tried to exhort them and win them over; but when they became no more moderate in response to these exhortations, then indeed they assembled in the senate house and considered what would be a more honorable solution to the disturbance holding the city.
ὅσοι μὲν οὖν ἐπιεικεῖς τὴν φύσιν καὶ μέτριοι τοῖς τιμήμασι τῶν βίων ἦσαν, παρῄνουν ἀφεῖναι τὰ χρέα τοῖς πένησι καὶ πρίασθαι πολιτικὴν εὔνοιαν ὀλίγου διαφόρου, μεγάλα μέλλοντας ἐξ αὐτῆς κερδανεῖν ἰδίᾳ τε καὶ δημοσίᾳ.
Now those who were gentle by nature and moderate in their wealth advised remitting the debts to the poor and purchasing the goodwill of the citizens at a small cost, since they were going to reap great advantages from it both privately and publicly.
