§3.30.1ὡς δὲ ταῦτʼ εἶπεν, ὅσοι μὲν ἦσαν Ἀλβανῶν πένητες ἠγάπων εἰ Ῥώμην τε οἰκήσουσι καὶ τῆς γῆς κλῆρον ἕξουσι καὶ ἐπῄνουν μεγάλῃ βοῇ τὰ διδόμενα, οἱ δὲ λαμπρότεροι τοῖς ἀξιώμασι καὶ ταῖς τύχαις κρείττους ἤχθοντο, εἰ δεήσει πόλιν τε τὴν γειναμένην αὐτοὺς ἐκλιπεῖν καὶ προγονικὰς ἑστίας ἐρημῶσαι καὶ τὸ λοιπὸν οἰκεῖν ἐν τῇ ξένῃ· οἷς οὐδὲν ἐπῄει λέγειν εἰς τὴν ἐσχάτην κατακεκλειμένοις ἀνάγκην.
When he had said this, such of the Albans as were poor were glad that they were to dwell in Rome and have allotments of land, and they praised what was given to them with a loud shout; but those who were more illustrious in their dignity and superior in their fortunes were grieved that they must leave the city that had given them birth, abandon their ancestral hearths, and for the future dwell in a foreign land; to whom, shut up as they were in the utmost necessity, no word occurred to say.
ὁ δὲ Τύλλος ἐπειδὴ τὴν διάνοιαν εἶδε τῶν πολλῶν, ἀπολογεῖσθαι τὸν Μέττιον ἐκέλευσεν, εἴ τι πρὸς ταῦτα λέγειν βούλεται.
And Tullus, when he saw the disposition of the multitude, ordered Mettius to make his defense, if he wished to say anything in reply to these things.
§3.30.2οὐκ ἔχων δʼ ὁ Μέττιος ὅ τι χρὴ λέγειν πρὸς τοὺς κατηγοροῦντάς τε καὶ καταμαρτυροῦντας τὴν Ἀλβανῶν βουλὴν ἔφησεν αὑτῷ ταῦτα ὑποθέσθαι ποιεῖν διʼ ἀπορρήτων, ὅτε ἐξῆγε τὴν δύναμιν ἐπὶ τὸν πόλεμον, ἠξίου τε τοὺς Ἀλβανούς, οἷς ἀνακτήσασθαι τὴν ἡγεμονίαν ἐπεχείρει, βοηθεῖν αὐτῷ καὶ μήτε τὴν πατρίδα κατασκαπτομένην περιορᾶν μήτε τοὺς ἐπιφανεστάτους τῶν πολιτῶν ἐπὶ τιμωρίαις συναρπαζομένους.
But Mettius, not knowing what he ought to say to those who accused him and bore witness against him, asserted that the senate of Alba had secretly suggested to him to do these things when he was leading out the army to the war; and he demanded of the Albans, for whom he had attempted to recover the hegemony, to help him and neither to look on while their country was being demolished nor to permit the most illustrious of their citizens to be seized for punishment.
ταραχῆς δὲ γινομένης κατὰ τὴν ἐκκλησίαν καί τινων φεύγειν ἐπὶ τὰ ὅπλα ὡρμηκότων οἱ περιεστεφανωκότες τὸν ὄχλον ἀρθέντος σημείου τινὸς ἀνέσχον τὰ ξίφη.
And when a tumult arose in the assembly and some of them started to flee to their arms, those who had surrounded the crowd, upon a certain signal being raised, held up their swords.
§3.30.3περιφόβων δὲ γενομένων ἁπάντων ἀναστὰς πάλιν ὁ Τύλλος εἶπεν· οὐδὲν ἔτι ἔξεστιν ὑμῖν νεωτερίζειν οὐδʼ ἐξαμαρτάνειν, ἄνδρες Ἀλβανοί.
When all had become terrified, Tullus rose again and said: "It is no longer possible for you to make any revolution or to commit any error, men of Alba.
ὑμεῖς γὰρ ἂν παρακινεῖν τι τολμήσητε, πάντες ἀπολεῖσθε ὑπὸ τούτων· δείξας τοὺς ἔχοντας τὰ ξίφη.
For if you dare to make any move, you will all perish by the hands of these men"—pointing to those who held the swords.
δέχεσθε οὖν τὰ διδόμενα καὶ γίνεσθε ἀπὸ τοῦ χρόνου τοῦδε Ῥωμαῖοι.
"Receive, therefore, what is given to you and become Romans from this time forth.
δυεῖν γὰρ ἀνάγκη θάτερον ὑμᾶς ποιεῖν ἢ Ῥώμην κατοικεῖν ἢ μηδεμίαν ἑτέραν γῆν ἔχειν πατρίδα.
For you must of necessity do one of two things: either dwell in Rome, or have no other land for your country.
§3.30.4οἴχεται γὰρ ἕωθεν ἐκπεμφθεὶς ὑπʼ ἐμοῦ Μάρκος Ὁράτιος ἀναιρήσων τὴν πόλιν ὑμῶν ἐκ θεμελίων καὶ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἅπαντας εἰς Ῥώμην μετάξων.
For Marcus Horatius, who was sent by me at dawn, has gone to demolish your city from its foundations and to remove all the people to Rome.
ταῦτα οὖν εἰδότες ὅσον οὔπω γενησόμενα παύσασθε θανατῶντες καὶ ποιεῖτε τὰ κελευόμενα.
Knowing, therefore, that these things are all but accomplished, cease being eager for death and perform what is commanded.
Μέττιον δὲ Φουφέττιον ἀφανῶς τε ἡμῖν ἐπιβουλεύσαντα καὶ οὐδὲ νῦν ὀκνήσαντα ἐπὶ τὰ ὅπλα τοὺς ταραχώδεις καὶ στασιαστὰς καλεῖν τιμωρήσομαι τῆς κακῆς καὶ δολίου ψυχῆς ἀξίως. §3.30.5ταῦτα λέξαντος αὐτοῦ τὸ μὲν ἐρεθιζόμενον τῆς ἐκκλησίας μέρος ἔπτηξεν, οἷα δὴ κρατούμενον ἀνάγκῃ ἀφύκτῳ, τὸν δὲ Φουφέττιον ἀγανακτοῦντα ἔτι καὶ κεκραγότα μόνον τάς τε συνθήκας ἀνακαλούμενον, ἃς αὐτὸς ἐξηλέγχθη παρασπονδῶν, καὶ οὐδʼ ἐν κακοῖς τοῦ θράσους ὑφιέμενον οἱ ῥαβδοῦχοι κελεύσαντος τοῦ βασιλέως Τύλλου συλλαβόντες καὶ τὴν ἐσθῆτα περικαταρρήξαντες ἔξαινον τὸ σῶμα μάστιξι πάνυ πολλαῖς.
And as for Mettius Fufetius, who plotted against us in secret and has not even now hesitated to call the turbulent and seditious to arms, I will punish him in a manner worthy of his evil and deceitful soul." When he had said this, the excited part of the assembly cowered, as if overcome by an unavoidable necessity; but as for Fufetius, who was still expressing his indignation and crying out alone, invoking the treaties which he himself had been convicted of violating, and not abating his insolence even in his misfortunes, the lictors, at the command of King Tullus, seized him, tore off his clothes, and lacerated his body with very many stripes.
§3.30.6ἐπεὶ δὲ ταύτης ἅλις εἶχε τῆς τιμωρίας, προσελάσαντες δύο συνωρίδας τῇ μὲν ἑτέρᾳ προσήρτων τοὺς βραχίονας αὐτοῦ, τῇ δʼ ἑτέρᾳ τοὺς πόδας ῥυτῆρσι κατεχομένους μακροῖς· ἐλαυνόντων δὲ τῶν ἡνιόχων τὰς συνωρίδας ἀπʼ ἀλλήλων ξαινόμενός τε περὶ τῇ γῇ καὶ ἀνθελκόμενος ὑφʼ ἑκατέρας ἐπὶ τἀναντία ὁ δείλαιος ἐν ὀλίγῳ διασπᾶται χρόνῳ.
When he had had enough of this punishment, they brought up two two-horse chariots, and to the one they bound his arms and to the other his feet, which were held fast by long traces; and as the charioteers drove the chariots in opposite directions, the wretched man, dragged along the ground and pulled in opposite directions by each of them, was in a short time torn asunder.
§3.30.7Μέττιος μὲν δὴ Φουφέττιος οὕτως οἰκτρᾶς καὶ ἀσχήμονος τελευτῆς ἔτυχε, τοῖς δʼ ἑταίροις αὐτοῦ καὶ συνειδόσι τὴν προδοσίαν δικαστήρια ὁ βασιλεὺς καθίσας τοὺς ἁλόντας ἐξ αὐτῶν κατὰ τὸν τῶν λειποτακτῶν τε καὶ προδοτῶν νόμον ἀπέκτεινεν.
Thus did Mettius Fufetius meet with so pitiable and shameful an end; and as for his companions and those who were privy to the treachery, the king, having established courts, put to death such of them as were convicted, according to the law against deserters and traitors.
