§2.43.1Ῥωμύλος δὲ τοὺς ἄλλους διώκων ἐγγὺς γενόμενος τοῦ Καπιτωλίου καὶ πολλὰς ἐλπίδας ἔχων αἱρήσειν τὸ φρούριον ἄλλοις τε πολλοῖς τραύμασι καταπονηθεὶς καὶ δὴ καὶ λίθου πληγῇ ἐξαισίῳ κατὰ κροτάφου ἐνεχθέντος ἐκ τῶν ἄνωθεν κακωθείς, αἴρεταί τε πρὸς τῶν παρόντων ἡμιθανὴς καὶ εἰς τὸ §2.43.2τεῖχος ἀποφέρεται.
Romulus, pursuing the others and getting near the Capitol, and having great hopes of taking the fortress, was exhausted by many other wounds, and in particular was severely injured when a huge stone thrown from above struck his temple; and being carried away half-dead by those present, he was brought inside the wall.
τοῖς δὲ Ῥωμαίοις δέος ἐμπίπτει τὸν ἡγεμόνα οὐκέτι ὁρῶσι, καὶ τρέπεται τὸ δεξιὸν κέρας εἰς φυγήν·
Fear fell upon the Romans when they no longer saw their leader, and the right wing turned to flight.
οἱ δʼ ἐν τῷ εὐωνύμῳ ταχθέντες ἅμα τῷ Λοκόμωνι τέως μὲν ἀντεῖχον ὑπὸ τοῦ ἡγεμόνος ἀναθαρρρυνόμενοι, λαμπροτάτου τὰ πολέμια ἀνδρὸς καὶ πλεῖστα ἔργα κατὰ τοῦτον τὸν πόλεμον ἀποδειξαμένου· ἐπεὶ δὲ κἀκεῖνος ἐλασθεὶς διὰ τῶν πλευρῶν σαυνίῳ τῆς δυνάμεως ὑπολιπούσης ἔπεσεν οὐδʼ αὐτοὶ διέμειναν, φυγὴ δὲ μετὰ τοῦτο πάντων αὐτῶν ἐγίνετο, καὶ οἱ Σαβῖνοι τεθαρρηκότες ἐδίωκον ἄχρι τῆς πόλεως.
Those drawn up on the left wing together with Locumo held out for a time, being encouraged by their leader, a man most brilliant in war who had shown the greatest deeds in this war; but when he too, run through the side with a javelin, fell as his strength failed him, not even they remained, and after this a flight of them all took place, and the Sabines, taking courage, pursued them as far as the city.
§2.43.3ἤδη δὲ πλησιάζοντες ταῖς πύλαις ἀπηλαύνοντο τῆς νεότητος ἐπεξελθούσης αὐτοῖς ἀκραιφνοῦς, ᾗ τὰ τείχη φυλάττειν ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπέτρεψε, καὶ τοῦ Ῥωμύλου, ῥᾷον γὰρ ἤδη εἶχεν ἐκ τοῦ τραύματος, ἐκβοηθήσαντος ὡς εἶχε τάχους, ἐγίνετό τε ἀγχίστροφος ἡ τοῦ ἀγῶνος τύχη καὶ πολλὴν ἔχουσα τὴν ἐπὶ θάτερα μεταβολήν.
Now as they were already approaching the gates, they were driven back by the fresh youth who had sallied out against them, to whom the king had committed the guarding of the walls; and when Romulus also, for he was already feeling better from his wound, came out to help with all speed, the fortune of the battle was reversed, bringing a great change to the other side.
§2.43.4οἱ μέν γε φεύγοντες ὡς τὸν ἡγεμόνα ἐκ τοῦ ἀπροσδοκήτου φανέντα εἶδον ἀναλαβόντες ἑαυτοὺς ἐκ τοῦ προτέρου δέους εἰς τάξιν καθίσταντο καὶ οὐκέτι ἀνεβάλλοντο μὴ οὐχ ὁμόσε τοῖς ἐχθροῖς χωρεῖν·
For those who were fleeing, when they saw their leader appear unexpectedly, recovered themselves from their former fear and took their places in the ranks, and no longer hesitated to go hand-to-hand against the enemy.
οἱ δὲ τέως κατείργοντες αὐτοὺς καὶ μηδεμίαν οἰόμενοι μηχανὴν εἶναι τὸ μὴ οὐ κατὰ κράτος αὐτὴν τὴν πόλιν ἁλῶναι, ἐπειδὴ τὸ αἰφνίδιόν τε καὶ παράδοξον ἐθεάσαντο τῆς μεταβολῆς, περὶ σωτηρίας αὐτοὶ τῆς ἑαυτῶν ἐσκόπουν.
On the other hand, those who had hitherto been pressing them hard and thinking that there was no way that the city itself would not be taken by storm, when they beheld the sudden and unexpected reversal, began to consider their own safety.
ἦν δὲ αὐτοῖς οὐκ εὐπετὴς ἡ πρὸς τὸν χάρακα ἀναχώρησις καθʼ ὑψηλοῦ τε χωρίου καὶ διὰ κοίλης ὁδοῦ διωκομένοις, καὶ πολὺς αὐτῶν φόνος ἐν ταύτῃ γίνεται τῇ τροπῇ.
But their retreat to the camp was not easy for them, being pursued from high ground and through a hollow road, and a great slaughter of them took place in this rout.
§2.43.5ἐκείνην μὲν οὖν τὴν ἡμέραν οὕτως ἀγχωμάλως ἀγωνισάμενοι καὶ εἰς τύχας παραλόγους ἀμφότεροι καταστάντες ἡλίου περὶ καταφορὰν ὄντος ἤδη διεκρίθησαν.
Having thus fought on equal terms on that day, and both sides having encountered unexpected turns of fortune, they parted when the sun was already setting.
