First, then, was the pretext which was thought to have given rise to the hatred against the oligarchy, namely, that they wove the second term of office into the first, disregarding the people and despising the senate; next, that of the most respectable of the Romans, to whom the things done by them were not to their liking, some they drove out of the city, bringing false and terrible charges against them, and others they put to death, suborning accusers against them from their own associates and judging these trials themselves; and above all, that to the most audacious of the young men, whom each of them kept around himself, they permitted to plunder the property of those opposed to the government.
And these young men, as if their fatherland had been taken by storm in war, not only robbed of their possessions those who had acquired them lawfully, but also outraged their beautiful wives, insulted their marriageable daughters, and inflicted blows on those who showed indignation, just as if they were slaves; and they caused all those to whom these occurrences seemed unbearable to leave their fatherland together with their wives and children and migrate to the neighboring cities, where they were received by the Latins because of their weakness, and by the Hernici because of the equal citizenship recently granted to them by the Romans.
Consequently, as was to be expected, in the end only the friends of the tyrants were left, and those who had no concern for public affairs.
For neither did the patricians remain in the city, since they did not deign to flatter the rulers and were unable to oppose their actions, nor those enrolled in the senatorial council, whom it was necessary to attend upon the magistrates; but even of these, the majority, packing up with their entire households and leaving their houses empty, lived in the country.
And to the oligarchs, the flights of the most illustrious men were pleasing for many other reasons, but especially because to the licentious young men great audacity was added, since they were not even able to see those before whom they would have felt shame if they committed any outrageous act.
