After these, came the eighty-first Olympiad, in which Polymnastus of Cyrene won the stadium race, and at Athens Callias was archon, under whom Gaius Horatius and Quintus Minucius assumed the consulship in Rome.
Under them, the Sabines again marched against the Romans and laid waste much of their land; and those who fled from the fields came in crowds, saying that all the territory between Crustumeria and Fidenae was held by them.
The Aequians also, who had been recently defeated, were again in arms; and the most vigorous of them, marching by night against the city of Corbio, which they had delivered to the Romans in the preceding year, found the garrison inside sleeping and slaughtered them all, except a few who happened to be absent. The rest, marching with a great force against Ortona, a city of the Latin nation, took it by storm, and all the acts they were unable to inflict upon the Romans, they visited upon their allies out of rage.
For they put to death all the men of military age, except any who fled immediately upon the capture of the city, enslaved their wives and children and the elderly, and having hastily packed up as much of the property as they were able to carry, they retreated before all the Latins could come to the rescue.
When these things were reported at the same time by both the Latins and those who had escaped from the garrison, the senate voted to send out an army and that both consuls should march.
But the tribunes under the leadership of Verginius, who were in the same office for the fifth year, opposed them, as they had done in the preceding years, by obstructing the levies of the consuls, asserting that the war within the walls ought to be ended first by granting to the people the decision concerning the law which they were introducing for equal rights; and the people supported them as they delivered many speeches full of hatred against the senate.
But as time dragged on, and neither the consuls would consent to pass a preliminary decree and bring the law before the people, nor the tribunes would permit the enrollment and the departure of the army to take place, while many speeches and accusations which they made against one another in the assemblies and before the senate were wasted in vain, another political measure, introduced by the tribunes to the senate, which took the council by surprise, appeased the sedition that then prevailed, and became the cause of many other great advantages to the people.
I shall also relate in what manner the people obtained this power.
