years later, when Ilia went to the sacred grove of Ares for the purpose of bringing holy water, which she was to use for the sacrifices, someone violated her in the sacred precinct.
Some declare that this person was one of her suitors who was in love with the girl, while others say it was Amulius himself, who, not so much from desire as for the sake of a plot, had armed himself with weapons so that he would appear most terrifying, and disguised his recognizable features as much as he possibly could. most people tell a mythical story of an apparition of the divinity (daimon) to whom the place belonged, attributing to the occurrence many other supernatural signs, such as a sudden disappearance of the sun and a darkness spreading over the sky.
They also say that the form which the apparition had was far more wonderful in size and beauty than that of humans.
And they say that the ravisher spoke to the girl, comforting her grief—from which it became clear that he was a god—bidding her not to be troubled at all by what had happened.
For he said she had joined in marriage with the divinity who inhabited the place, and that from this violence she would bear two sons far surpassing all other men in virtue and warlike deeds.
And having said this, he was enveloped in a cloud and, lifted from the earth, was carried upward through the air., how one ought to hold an opinion about such matters—whether to despise them as human fabrications attributed to the gods, since no act of a god would undergo anything unworthy of his incorruptible and blessed nature, or to accept these stories as well, on the ground that the whole substance of the universe is mixed together and that between the divine and the mortal race there exists a certain third nature which the race of daimones occupies, blending sometimes with humans and sometimes with gods, from which, as the story goes, the mythical race of heroes was born—is not the time to examine at present, and what has been said about them by philosophers is sufficient. any rate, the girl, having feigned illness after the violence (for her mother had advised her to do this for the sake of safety and of what was holy toward the gods), no longer attended the sacred rites, but all the duties she had to perform were carried out through the other virgins, upon whom the same task was laid.
