§1.76.1Ἀμόλιος ἐπειδὴ παρέλαβε τὴν Ἀλβανῶν βασιλείαν τὸν πρεσβύτερον ἀδελφὸν Νεμέτορα τῷ κατισχῦσαι τῆς πατρίου τιμῆς ἀπείρξας, τά τε ἄλλα κατὰ πολλὴν ὑπεροψίαν τῶν δικαίων ἔδρα καὶ τελευτῶν ἔρημον γένους τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Νεμέτορος ἐπεβούλευσε ποιῆσαι, τοῦ τε δίκην ὑποσχεῖν φόβῳ καὶ ἔρωτι μὴ παυσθῆναί ποτε τῆς ἀρχῆς.
Amulius, when he received the kingship of the Albans, having excluded his elder brother Numitor from his ancestral office by overpowering him, both did other things in great contempt of justice, and finally plotted to leave the house of Numitor without offspring, through fear of paying the penalty and from a passion never to cease from his rule.
§1.76.2βουλευσάμενος δὲ ταῦτα ἐκ πολλοῦ πρῶτον μὲν τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Νεμέτορος Αἴγεστον ἄρτι γενειάζοντα φυλάξας ἔνθα ἐκυνηγέτει, προλοχίσας τοῦ χωρίου τὸ ἀφανέστατον, ἐξελθόντα ἐπὶ θήραν ἀποκτείνει καὶ παρεσκεύασε λέγεσθαι μετὰ τὸ ἔργον ὡς ὑπὸ λῃστῶν ἀναιρεθείη τὸ μειράκιον.
Having planned this long before, he first watched Aegestus, the son of Numitor, who was just growing his beard, where he was hunting; and having placed an ambush in the most hidden part of the place, he killed him when he came out for the hunt, and arranged for it to be said after the deed that the youth had been slain by robbers.
οὐ μέντοι κρείττων ἡ κατασκευαστὴ δόξα τῆς σιωπωμένης ἀληθείας ἐγένετο, ἀλλὰ πολλοῖς καὶ παρὰ τὸ ἀσφαλὲς ἐτολμᾶτο λέγεσθαι τὸ πραχθέν.
However, the fabricated story did not prove stronger than the silenced truth, but the deed was dared to be told by many, even at their own peril.
§1.76.3Νεμέτωρ δὲ ᾔδει μὲν τὸ ἔργον, λογισμῷ δὲ κρείττονι τοῦ πάθους χρώμενος ἄγνοιαν ἐσκήπτετο εἰς ἀκινδυνότερον ἀναβαλέσθαι χρόνον τὴν ὀργὴν βουλευσάμενος.
Numitor knew of the deed, but employing a reason superior to his passion, he feigned ignorance, having resolved to defer his anger to a safer time.
Ἀμόλιος δὲ τὰ τοῦ μειρακίου ὑπολαβὼν λεληθέναι δεύτερα τάδε ἐποίει· τὴν θυγατέρα τοῦ Νεμέτορος Ἰλίαν, ὡς δέ τινες γράφουσι Ῥέαν ὄνομα, Σιλουΐαν δʼ ἐπίκλησιν, ἐν ἀκμῇ γάμου γενομένην ἱέρειαν ἀποδείκνυσιν Ἑστίας, ὡς μὴ τάχιον εἰς ἀνδρὸς ἐλθοῦσα τέκῃ τιμωροὺς τῷ γένει.
But Amulius, supposing that the matter of the youth was undetected, did this second thing: he appointed Ilia, the daughter of Numitor—though some write her name as Rhea, with the surname Silvia—who was of marriageable age, to be a priestess of Hestia, so that she might not marry too soon and bear avengers for her family.
πενταετοῦς δὲ οὐκ ἐλάττω χρόνου ἔδει τὰς ἱερὰς κόρας ἁγνὰς διαμεῖναι γάμων, αἷς ἀνατέθειται τοῦ τε ἀσβέστου πυρὸς ἡ φυλακὴ καὶ εἴ τι ἄλλο θρησκεύεσθαι τῷ κοινῷ διὰ παρθένων νόμιμον ἦν.
The sacred virgins were required to remain pure from marriage for a period of not less than five years, and to them had been committed both the guarding of the unquenchable fire and whatever other rites were established by law for the state to be performed by virgins.
§1.76.4ἔπραττε δὲ Ἀμόλιος τοῦτο μετʼ ὀνομάτων καλῶν, ὡς τιμὴν τῷ γένει καὶ κόσμον περιτιθεὶς οὔτε αὐτὸς εἰσηγησάμενος τὸν νόμον τόνδε οὔτε κοινῷ ὄντι πρῶτον ἀναγκάσας τῶν ἐν ἀξιώματι χρῆσθαι τὸν ἀδελφόν, ἐν ἔθει δὲ τοῖς Ἀλβανοῖς καὶ ἐν καλῷ ὂν τὰς εὐγενεστάτας ἀποδείκνυσθαι κόρας τῆς Ἑστίας προπόλους.
Amulius did this under honorable names, as if conferring honor and ornament upon the family, neither having himself introduced this law nor being the first to compel his brother to use it when it was common to those of high rank, but because it was customary and honorable for the Albans to appoint the most noble virgins as handmaidens of Hestia.
ὁ δὲ Νεμέτωρ αἰσθόμενος οὐκ ἀπὸ τοῦ βελτίστου ταῦτα πράττοντα τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὀργὴν φανερὰν οὐκ ἐποιεῖτο, ἵνα μὴ τῷ δήμῳ ἀπέχθοιτο, ἀπόρρητον δὲ καὶ τοῦτο ἐφύλαττε τὸ ἔγκλημα.
But Numitor, perceiving that his brother did this not from the best motives, did not show open anger, lest he should make himself hated by the people, and kept this injury also a secret.
