§3.1ἔκ Τραπεζοῦντος δὲ ὁρμηθέντες τῇ μὲν πρώτῃ ἐς Ὕσσου λιμένα κατήραμεν καὶ τοὺς πεζοὺς τοὺς ταύτῃ ἐγυμνάσαμεν· ἡ γὰρ τάξις αὕτη, ὡς οἶσθα, πεζῶν ἐστιν καὶ ἱππέας εἴκοσιν ἐς διακονίαν ἔχει.
Setting out from Trapezus, on the first day we put in at the harbor of Hyssus, and there we trained the infantry; for this unit, as you know, consists of infantry and has twenty cavalrymen for service.
ἀλλὰ καὶ τούτους τὰς λόγχας ἀκοντίσαι ἐδέησεν.
But it was necessary for these also to throw their javelins.
ἐνθένδε ἐπλέομεν, τὰ §3.2μὲν πρῶτα ταῖς αὔραις ταῖς ἐκ τῶν ποταμῶν πνεούσαις ἕωθεν καὶ ἅμα ταῖς κώπαις διαχρώμενοι· ψυχραὶ μὲν γὰρ ἦσαν αἱ αὖραι, ὡς λέγει καὶ Ὅμηρος, οὐχ ἱκαναὶ δὲ τοῖς ταχυναυτεῖν βουλομένοις.
From there we sailed, and at first indeed, making use of the breezes blowing from the rivers at dawn and at the same time using our oars; for the breezes were cold, as Homer also says, but not sufficient for those who wished to sail quickly.
εἶτα γαλήνη ἐπέλαβεν, ὥστε τῇ εἰρεσίᾳ μόνῃ ἐχρώμεθα.
Then a calm came upon us, so that we used only rowing.
ἔπειτα §3.3δὲ ἄφνω νεφέλη ἐπαναστᾶσα ἐξερράγη κατʼ εὖρον μάλιστα, καὶ ἐπήνεγκεν πνεῦμα ἐξαίσιον καὶ τοῦτο ἀκριβῶς ἐναντίον, ὅπερ κἂν μόνον ἀπώλεσεν ἡμᾶς· κοίλην μὲν γὰρ διʼ ὀλίγου τὴν θάλασσαν ἐποίησεν, ὡς μὴ κατὰ τὰς κώπας μόνον ἀλλὰ καὶ ὑπὲρ τὰς παρεξειρεσίας ἐπεσρεῖν ἡμῖν ἑκατέρωθεν ἀφθόνως τοῦ ὕδατος, τοῦτο δὴ τὸ τραγικόν, §3.4ʽκαὶ τὴν μὲν ἐξηντλοῦμεν, ἣ δʼ ἐπεσρέει. ʼ ἀλλʼ οὐ πλάγιόν γε ἦν τὸ κλυδώνιον.
Then suddenly a cloud arose and broke, chiefly from the southeast, and brought a violent wind, and this exactly contrary, which by itself might have destroyed us; for in a short time it made the sea hollow, so that the water flowed in upon us abundantly from both sides, not only at the oars but also over the gunwales—indeed, that tragic situation, "and while we were pumping out one part, another flowed in." But the wave was not broadside-on.
ταύτῃ καὶ ἠνύτομεν μόλις καὶ χαλεπῶς τῇ εἰρεσίᾳ, καὶ μέντοι πολλὰ παθόντες ἥκομεν ἐς τὰς Ἀθήνας.
In this way we also made progress with difficulty and pain by rowing, and indeed, after suffering many things, we arrived at Athenae.
