§18.1ΗΡΑ
Καλὰ μέν, ὦ Λητοῖ, καὶ τὰ τέκνα ἔτεκες τῷ Διί.
HERA Fine indeed, Leto, are the children you have borne to Zeus.
ΛΗΤΩ
Οὐ πᾶσαι γάρ, ὦ Ἥρα, τοιούτους τίκτειν δυνάμεθα, οἷος ὁ Ἥφαιστός ἐστιν.
LETO For we cannot all, Hera, bear such children as Hephaestus is.
ΗΡΑ
Ἀλλ' οὖν οὗτος, εἰ καὶ χωλός, ἀλλ’ ὅμως χρήσιμός γέ ἐστι τεχνίτης ὢν ἄριστος καὶ κατακεκόσμηκεν ἡμῖν τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν Ἀφροδίτην γεγάμηκε καὶ σπουδάζεται πρὸς αὐτῆς, οἱ δὲ σοὶ παῖδες ἡ μὲν αὐτῶν ἀρρενικὴ πέρα τοῦ μετρίου καὶ ὄρειος, καὶ τὸ τελευταῖον ἐς τὴν Σκυθίαν ἀπελθοῦσα πάντες ἴσασιν οἷα ἐσθίει ξενοκτονοῦσα καὶ μιμουμένη τοὺς Σκύθας αὐτοὺς ἀνθρωποφάγους ὄντας· ὁ δὲ Ἀπόλλων προσποιεῖται μὲν πάντα εἰδέναι καὶ τοξεύειν καὶ κιθαρίζειν καὶ ἰατρὸς εἶναι καὶ μαντεύεσθαι καὶ καταστησάμενος ἐργαστήρια τῆς μαντικῆς τὸ μὲν ἐν Δελφοῖς, τὸ δὲ ἐν Κλάρῳ καὶ ἐν Κολοφῶνι καὶ ἐν Διδύμοις ἐξαπατᾷ τοὺς χρωμένους αὐτῷ λοξὰ καὶ ἐπαμφοτερίζοντα πρὸς ἑκάτερον τῆς ἐρωτήσεως ἀποκρινόμενος, πρὸς τὸ ἀκίνδυνον εἶναι τὸ σφάλμα.
HERA Well, at any rate, though he is lame, he is nevertheless useful, being an excellent craftsman, and he has decorated heaven for us, and has married Aphrodite and is cherished by her; but as for your children, the girl is masculine beyond measure and mountain-dwelling, and finally, having gone off to Scythia, everyone knows what kind of things she eats, killing strangers and imitating the Scythians themselves who are cannibals; while Apollo pretends to know everything, to shoot with the bow, to play the cithara, to be a doctor, and to prophesy; and having set up oracle shops, one in Delphi, another in Claros and in Colophon and in Didyma, he deceives those who consult him by giving ambiguous and double-meaning answers to either side of the question, so that any error may be free from danger.
καὶ πλουτεῖ μὲν ἀπὸ τοῦ τοιούτου· πολλοὶ γὰρ οἱ ἀνόητοι καὶ παρέχοντες αὑτοὺς καταγοητεύεσθαι· πλὴν οὐκ ἀγνοεῖταί γε ὑπὸ τῶν ξυνετωτέρων τὰ πολλὰ τερατευόμενος· αὐτὸς γοῦν ὁ μάντις ἠγνόει μὲν ὅτι φονεύσει τὸν ἐρώμενον τῷ δίσκῳ, οὐ προεμαντεύετο δὲ ὡς φεύξεται αὐτὸν ἡ Δάφνη, καὶ ταῦτα οὕτω καλὸν καὶ κομήτην ὄντα· ὥστε οὐχ ὁρῶ καθότι καλλιτεκνοτέρα τῆς Νιόβης ἔδοξας.
And he grows rich from such things; for those who are foolish and offer themselves to be hoodwinked are many; nevertheless, his boasting of miracles on most occasions is not unnoticed by the wiser sort; at any rate, this prophet himself did not know that he would kill his beloved with the discus, nor did he predict that Daphne would flee from him, even though he is so handsome and has such long hair; so that I do not see in what respect you were thought to have better children than Niobe.
§18.2ΛΗΤΩ
Ταῦτα μέντοι τὰ τέκνα, ἡ ξενοκτόνος καὶ ὁ ψευδόμαντις, οἶδα, ὅπως λυπεῖ σε ὁρώμενα ἐν τοῖς θεοῖς, καὶ μάλιστα ὁπόταν ἡ μὲν ἐπαινῆται ἐς τὸ κάλλος, ὁ δὲ κιθαρίζῃ ἐν τῷ συμποσίῳ θαυμαζόμενος ὑφ' ἁπάντων.
LETO Yet these children, the killer of strangers and the false prophet, I know how it pains you to see them among the gods, and especially whenever she is praised for her beauty, and he plays the cithara in the banquet, admired by everyone.

Ἐγέλασα, ὦ Λητοῖ·
HERA I laugh, Leto!
ἐκεῖνος θαυμαστός, ὃν ὁ Μαρσύας, εἰ τὰ δίκαια αἱ Μοῦσαι δικάσαι ἤθελον, ἀπέδειρεν ἂν αὐτὸς κρατήσας τῇ μουσικῇ· νῦν δὲ κατασοφισθεὶς ἅθλιος ἀπόλωλεν ἀδίκως ἁλούς·
That one is wonderful, whom Marsyas, if the Muses had wished to judge justly, would himself have flayed after winning in music; but as it is, having been outwitted, the wretched man perished, unjustly defeated.
ἡ δὲ καλή σου παρθένος οὕτω καλή ἐστιν, ὥστε ἐπεὶ ἔμαθεν ὀφθεῖσα ὑπὸ τοῦ Ἀκταίωνος, φοβηθεῖσα μὴ ὁ νεανίσκος ἐξαγορεύσῃ τὸ αἶσχος αὐτῆς, ἐπαφῆκεν αὐτῷ τοὺς κύνας· ἐῶ γὰρ λέγειν ὅτι οὐδὲ τὰς τεκούσας ἐμαιοῦτο παρθένος γε αὐτὴ οὖσα.
And your beautiful virgin is so beautiful that when she realized she had been seen by Actaeon, fearing lest the young man should blab out her deformity, she set his own dogs upon him; for I refrain from mentioning that she, being a virgin herself, used to act as a midwife to women in labor.
ΛΗΤΩ
Μέγα, ὦ Ἥρα, φρονεῖς, ὅτι ξύνει τῷ Διὶ καὶ συμβασιλεύεις αὐτῷ, καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ὑβρίζεις ἀδεῶς· πλὴν ἀλλ’ ὄψομαί σε μετ' ὀλίγον αὖθις δακρύουσαν, ὁπόταν σε καταλιπὼν ἐς τὴν γῆς κατίῃ ταῦρος ἢ κύκνος γενόμενος.
LETO You are very proud, Hera, because you live with Zeus and reign with him, and for this reason you insult us without fear; nevertheless, I shall see you crying again after a little while, whenever he leaves you and goes down to the earth, having become a bull or a swan.
