Zeus: I know that I said many such things back then.
But you, tell me now what followed: how they first received you when you flew down, and what you have now suffered at their hands.
Philosophy: I sped, father, not to the Greeks immediately, but rather—what seemed to me to be the harder part of the task, namely to educate and teach the barbarians—this I thought worthy to do first; but the Greek element I allowed to be brought under as easily and quickly as possible, since I thought it would readily receive the bit and be brought under the yoke.
Having set out first for the Indians, the greatest nation in the world, I not without difficulty persuaded them to descend from their elephants and associate with me, so that even a whole race, the Brahmans, neighboring the Nechraioi and Oxydrakai—all of these are marshaled under me and live according to our tenets, honored by all their neighbors, and they die in a strange manner of death.
Zeus: You speak of the Gymnosophists.
At least I hear, among other things about them, that having ascended a very large pyre, they endure being burned, without changing anything of their posture or their seat.
But this is not a great thing; at least I saw the same thing happen recently at Olympia, and it is likely that you also were present when that old man was burning then.
Philosophy: I did not even go up to Olympia, father, out of fear of those accursed men I mentioned, because I saw many of them going off to insult those who had assembled and fill the opisthodomos with noise, barking; so that I did not even see how that man died.
Philosophy: After the Brahmans, therefore, I went down immediately to Ethiopia, then to Egypt, and having associated with their priests and prophets and instructed them in divine things, I departed for Babylon to initiate the Chaldeans and Magi; thence to Scythia, then to Thrace, where Eumolpus and Orpheus associated with me. Having sent them ahead into Greece—the one, Eumolpus, so that he might initiate them (for he had learned all divine things from us), the other so that he might win them over by chanting with music—I followed immediately at their heels.
Philosophy: And at first, when I arrived, the Greeks neither welcomed me very warmly nor shut me out entirely; but gradually associating with them, I won over seven companions and disciples from them all, and another from Samos, another from Ephesus, and another from Abdera, very few in total.
Philosophy: After them, the tribe of the sophists, I know not how, grafted itself onto me, neither emulating my ways deeply nor being altogether out of tune, but like the race of Centaurs, a certain composite and mixed thing wandering in the middle between pretension and philosophy, neither completely held by ignorance nor able to look upon us with steady eyes, but like those with bleary eyes, seeing because of their dim sight some unclear and faint image or shadow of us at times; yet they thought they had understood everything accurately.
Hence, that useless and superfluous wisdom of theirs flared up, and as they thought, invincible: those elegant, difficult, and strange answers, and those hard-to-escape and labyrinthine questions.
Philosophy: Then, being hindered and refuted by my companions, they were indignant and conspired against them, and finally brought them to court and handed them over to drink hemlock.
Perhaps, indeed, I ought to have fled immediately then and no longer endured their company; but now Antisthenes and Diogenes, and a little later Crates and this Menippus here, persuaded me to add a tiny measure to my stay—would that I had not!
For then I would not have suffered so much afterwards.
