Lucian · Menippus or The Descent into Hades §6-8

Preparations for Hades with the Magus Mithrobarzanes

Passage 3 of 7 · Greek

Summary

Disillusioned by the philosophers, Menippus goes to Babylon and hires the Chaldean magus Mithrobarzanes to guide him to Hades to consult Teiresias. The magus performs various purificatory rituals on Menippus and disguises him as a mythical hero to bypass the underworld guard.

§6Μένιππος σφαλεὶς οὖν καὶ τῆσδε τῆς ἐλπίδος ἔτι μᾶλλον ἐδυσχέραινον, ἠρέμα παραμυθούμενος ἐμαυτὸν ὅτι μετὰ πολλῶν καὶ σοφῶν καὶ σφόδρα ἐπὶ συνέσει διαβεβοημένων ἀνόητός τέ εἰμι καὶ τἀληθὲς ἔτι ἀγνοῶν περιέρχομαι.
Menippus Having been disappointed also of this hope, I was still more vexed, gently comforting myself with the thought that, along with many wise men who were highly celebrated for their intellect, I too was foolish and went about still ignorant of the truth.
καί μοί ποτε διαγρυπνοῦντι τούτων ἕνεκα ἔδοξεν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα ἐλθόντα δεηθῆναί τινος τῶν μάγων τῶν Ζωροάστρου μαθητῶν καὶ διαδόχων·
And once, as I was keeping awake because of these things, it seemed best to me to go to Babylon and entreat one of the magi, the disciples and successors of Zoroaster.
ἤκουον δʼ αὐτοὺς ἐπῳδαῖς τε καὶ τελεταῖς τισιν ἀνοίγειν τοῦ Ἅιδου τὰς πύλας καὶ κατάγειν ὃν ἂν βούλωνται ἀσφαλῶς καὶ ὀπίσω αὖθις ἀναπέμπειν.
For I heard that by certain incantations and rites they opened the gates of Hades, conducted down securely whomever they wished, and sent them back up again.
ἄριστον οὖν ἡγούμην εἶναι παρά τινος τούτων διαπραξάμενον τὴν κατάβασιν ἐλθόντα παρὰ Τειρεσίαν τὸν Βοιώτιον μαθεῖν παρʼ αὐτοῦ ἅτε μάντεως καὶ σοφοῦ, τίς ἐστιν ὁ ἄριστος βίος καὶ ὃν ἄν τις ἕλοιτο εὖ φρονῶν.
Therefore, I thought it best, having managed the descent with the help of one of these men, to go to Teiresias the Boeotian and learn from him, since he was a prophet and wise, what the best life is, and which one a man of sound mind would choose.
καὶ δὴ ἀναπηδήσας ὡς εἶχον τάχους ἔτεινον εὐθὺ Βαβυλῶνος·
And so, leaping up as fast as I could, I hastened straight to Babylon.
ἐλθὼν δὲ συγγίγνομαί τινι τῶν Χαλδαίων σοφῷ ἀνδρὶ καὶ θεσπεσίῳ τὴν τέχνην, πολιῷ μὲν τὴν κόμην, γένειον δὲ μάλα σεμνὸν καθειμένῳ, τοὔνομα δὲ ἦν αὐτῷ Μιθροβαρζάνης.
When I arrived, I met with one of the Chaldeans, a wise man and divine in his art, grey-haired, keeping a very venerable beard flowing down, and his name was Mithrobarzanes.
δεηθεὶς δὲ καὶ καθικετεύσας μόγις ἐπέτυχον παρʼ αὐτοῦ, ἐφʼ ὅτῳ βούλοιτο μισθῷ, καθηγήσασθαί μοι τῆς ὁδοῦ.
Having entreated and supplicated him, I barely succeeded in obtaining from him, on condition of whatever pay he wished, that he should guide me on the way.
Menippus The man took me in charge and first of all, for twenty-nine days, beginning with the moon, washed me, taking me down at dawn to the Euphrates toward the rising sun, while reciting a certain long speech which I did not hear very well; for like the bad heralds in the games, he spoke rapidly and indistinctly.
πλὴν ἐῴκει γέ τινας ἐπικαλεῖσθαι δαίμονας.
However, he seemed to be calling upon certain spirits.
μετὰ δʼ οὖν τὴν ἐπῳδὴν τρὶς ἄν μου πρὸς τὸ πρόσωπον ἀποπτύσας, ἐπανῄει πάλιν οὐδένα τῶν ἀπαντώντων προσβλέπων.
At any rate, after the incantation, having spit thrice at my face, he went back again without looking at any of those who met us.
καὶ σιτία μὲν ἦν ἡμῖν τὰ ἀκρόδρυα, ποτὸν δὲ γάλα καὶ μελίκρατον καὶ τὸ τοῦ Χοάσπου ὕδωρ, εὐνὴ δὲ ὑπαίθριος ἐπὶ τῆς πόας.
And our food was tree-fruits, our drink milk, mead, and the water of the Choaspes, and our bed was in the open air upon the grass.
When there was enough of this preparatory regimen, about midnight he led me to the river Tigris, purified me, wiped me clean, and hallowed me with a torch, a squill, and several other things, while also muttering that same incantation.
εἶτά με ὅλον καταμαγεύσας καὶ περιελθών, ἵνα μὴ βλαπτοίμην ὑπὸ τῶν φασμάτων, ἐπανάγει εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν, ὡς εἶχον, ἀναποδίζοντα, καὶ τὸ λοιπὸν ἀμφὶ πλοῦν εἴχομεν.
Then, having thoroughly charmed me and walked around me, so that I might not be harmed by the apparitions, he led me back to the house, just as I was, walking backward, and for the rest of the time we were occupied with the voyage.
Menippus He himself, indeed, put on a certain magical robe, for the most part resembling the Median dress, and equipped me with these things: the felt cap, the lion's skin, and additionally the lyre, and commanded me, if anyone should ask my name, not to say Menippus, but Heracles, Odysseus, or Orpheus.
Φίλος ὡς δὴ τί τοῦτο, ὦ Μένιππε;
Friend To what purpose is this, Menippus?
οὐ γὰρ συνίημι τὴν αἰτίαν οὔτε τοῦ σχήματος οὔτε τῶν ὀνομάτων.
For I do not understand the reason either for the costume or for the names.
Menippus Indeed, this is quite obvious and not altogether a secret; for since these men, while still living before us, had descended to Hades, he thought that if he made me look like them, I would easily escape the notice of Aeacus' guard and pass through unhindered as one more familiar, being escorted in a highly tragic fashion by the costume.

Notes

  1. §6ὡς εἶχον τάχους — An idiomatic expression combining the conjunction ὡς and ἔχω (imperfect εἶχον) with the partitive genitive τάχους, meaning 'with all possible speed' or 'as fast as I could'.
  2. §6ἐφʼ ὅτῳ βούλοιτο μισθῷ — A construction consisting of the preposition ἐπί (elided as ἐφʼ) denoting condition, followed by the relative pronoun ὅστις. The optative βούλοιτο is an optative of oblique clause due to the past-tense main verb ἐπέτυχον (aorist), indicating an indefinite condition: 'on condition of whatever pay he might wish'.
  3. §7ἅμα τῇ σελήνῃ ἀρξάμενος — The participle ἀρξάμενος (aorist middle participle of ἄρχομαι) accompanied by the prepositional phrase ἅμα τῇ σελήνῃ ('together with the moon', i.e., at the new moon), meaning 'beginning with the new moon'. The participle agrees with the subject of the sentence, 'the man' (the magus), indicating the starting point of his ritual.
  4. ¦p.v.4.p.86¦ὡς εἶχον, ἀναποδίζοντα — The clause ὡς εἶχον is an idiomatic expression meaning 'just as I was' (imperfect of ἔχω used intransitively). The accusative participle ἀναποδίζοντα ('walking backward') modifies the unexpressed direct object of the main verb ἐπανάγει (namely, Menippus).
  5. §8ὡς δὴ τί τοῦτο — A highly elliptical colloquial question. The interrogative adverbial phrase ὡς τί ('to what end/purpose') is combined with the emphatic particle δή and the demonstrative pronoun τοῦτο. A verb such as γένηται is understood: 'to what purpose indeed is this?'.
