§9τὰ μὲν τοίνυν πρὸς τὰς συνουσίας αὐτοὺς ἄγοντα καὶ ἀφʼ ὧν αὑτοὺς φέροντες ἐπιτρέπουσι τοῖς πλουσίοις χρῆσθαι πρὸς ὅ τι ἂν ἐθέλωσιν, ταῦτά ἐστιν ἢ ὅτι ἐγγύτατα τούτων, πλὴν εἰ μὴ κἀκείνων τις μεμνῆσθαι ἀξιώσειεν τῶν καὶ μόνῃ τῇ δόξῃ ἐπαιρομένων τοῦ συνεῖναι εὐπατρίδαις τε καὶ εὐπαρύφοις ἀνδράσιν·
Accordingly, the things that lead them to these associations, and the reasons based on which they hand themselves over to the rich to be used for whatever they wish, are these or very close to these; unless indeed someone should think fit to mention those also who are elated by the mere reputation of associating with well-born and purple-clad men.
εἰσὶν γὰρ οἳ καὶ τοῦτο περίβλεπτον καὶ ὑπὲρ τοὺς πολλοὺς νομίζουσιν, ὡς ἔγωγε τοὐμὸν ἴδιον οὐδὲ βασιλεῖ τῷ μεγάλῳ αὐτὸ μόνον συνεῖναι καὶ συνὼν ὁρᾶσθαι μηδὲν χρηστὸν ἀπολαύων τῆς συνουσίας δεξαίμην ἄν.
For there are those who think this too is enviable and beyond the common crowd, whereas I, for my own part, would not accept even associating with the Great King for this alone, and being seen associating with him, while deriving no benefit from the association.
§10τοιαύτης δὲ αὐτοῖς τῆς ὑποθέσεως οὔσης, φέρε ἤδη πρὸς ἡμᾶς αὐτοὺς ἐπισκοπήσωμεν οἷα μὲν πρὸ τοῦ εἰσδεχθῆναι καὶ τυχεῖν ὑπομένουσιν, οἷα δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ ἤδη ὄντες πάσχουσιν, ἐπὶ πᾶσι δὲ ἥτις αὐτοῖς ἡ καταστροφὴ τοῦ δράματος γίγνεται.
Such being their premise, come now, let us examine among ourselves what things they endure before being admitted and succeeding, what things they suffer when they are already in it, and above all, what the catastrophe of the drama becomes for them.
οὐ γὰρ δὴ ἐκεῖνό γε εἰπεῖν ἐστιν, ὡς εἰ καὶ πονηρὰ ταῦτα, εὔληπτα γοῦν καὶ οὐ πολλοῦ δεήσει τοῦ πόνου, ἀλλὰ θελῆσαι δεῖ μόνον, εἶτά σοι πέπρακται τὸ πᾶν εὐμαρῶς·
For indeed it is not possible to say this: that even if these things are bad, they are at least easy to get and will not require much labor, but one only needs to wish, and then everything is easily accomplished for you.
ἀλλὰ πολλῆς μὲν τῆς διαδρομῆς δεῖ, συνεχοῦς δὲ τῆς θυραυλίας, ἕωθέν τε ἐξανιστάμενον περιμένειν ὠθούμενον καὶ ἀποκλειόμενον καὶ ἀναίσχυντον ἐνίοτε καὶ ὀχληρὸν δοκοῦντα καὶ ὑπὸ θυρωρῷ κακῶς συρίζοντι καὶ ὀνομακλήτορι Λιβυκῷ ταττόμενον καὶ μισθὸν τελοῦντα τῆς μνήμης τοῦ ὀνόματος.
On the contrary, there is need of much running about, and constant waiting at the doors, and rising at dawn to wait, being pushed about and shut out, appearing sometimes impudent and troublesome, and being placed under a door-keeper who speaks with a harsh accent and a Libyan nomenclator, and paying a fee for the remembering of one's name.
καὶ μὴν καὶ ἐσθῆτος ὑπὲρ τὴν ὑπάρχουσαν δύναμιν ἐπιμεληθῆναι χρὴ πρὸς τὸ τοῦ θεραπευομένου ἀξίωμα, καὶ χρώματα αἱρεῖσθαι οἷς ἂν ἐκεῖνος ἥδηται, ὡς μὴ ἀπᾴδῃς μηδὲ προσκρούῃς βλεπόμενος, καὶ φιλοπόνως ἕπεσθαι, μᾶλλον δὲ ἡγεῖσθαι, ὑπὸ τῶν οἰκετῶν προωθούμενον καὶ ὥσπερ τινὰ πομπὴν ἀναπληροῦντα.
Moreover, one must also take care of clothing beyond one's means, in keeping with the dignity of the person courted, and choose colors in which he delights, so that you may not be out of tune or offend when looked at, and follow him laboriously, or rather lead the way, pushed forward by the servants, and filling up, as it were, a sort of procession.
ὁ δὲ οὐδὲ προσβλέπει πολλῶν ἑξῆς ἡμερῶν.
But he does not even look at you for many consecutive days.
§11ἢν δέ ποτε καὶ τὰ ἄριστα πράξῃς, καὶ ἴδῃ σε καὶ προσκαλέσας ἔρηταί τι ὧν ἂν τύχῃ, τότε δὴ τότε πολὺς μὲν ὁ ἱδρώς, ἀθρόος δὲ ὁ ἴλιγγος καὶ τρόμος ἄκαιρος καὶ γέλως τῶν παρόντων ἐπὶ τῇ ἀπορίᾳ.
And if ever you should fare best, and he looks at you and, calling you over, asks you some chance question, then indeed, then there is much sweat, sudden dizziness, untimely trembling, and laughter from those present at your helplessness.
καὶ πολλάκις ἀποκρίνασθαι δέον,
τίς ἦν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἀχαιῶν,
ὅτι
χίλιαι νῆες ἦσαν αὐτοῖς,
λέγεις. τοῦτο οἱ μὲν χρηστοὶ αἰδῶ ἐκάλεσαν, οἱ δὲ τολμηροὶ δειλίαν, οἱ δὲ κακοήθεις ἀπαιδευσίαν.
And often, when you ought to answer who was the king of the Achaeans, you say that "they had a thousand ships." This, the decent call modesty, the bold call cowardice, and the malicious call ignorance.
σὺ δʼ οὖν ἐπισφαλεστάτης πειραθεὶς τῆς πρώτης φιλοφροσύνης ἀπῆλθες καταδικάσας σεαυτοῦ πολλὴν τὴν ἀπόγνωσιν.
You, at any rate, having experienced a most precarious first favor, depart having condemned yourself to great despair.
ἐπειδὰν δὲ

πολλὰς μὲν ἀΰπνους νύκτας ἰαύσῃς
ἤματα δʼ αἱματόεντα
"
διαγάγῃς, οὐ μὰ Δία τῆς Ἑλένης ἕνεκα οὐδὲ τῶν Πριάμου Περγάμων, ἀλλὰ τῶν ἐλπιζομένων πέντε ὀβολῶν, τύχῃς δὲ καὶ τραγικοῦ τινος θεοῦ συνιστάντος, ἐξέτασις τοὐντεῦθεν εἰ οἶσθα τὰ μαθήματα.
And when you have "passed many sleepless nights, and gone through bloody days," —not, by Zeus, for the sake of Helen, nor for Priam's Pergama, but for the hoped-for five obols—and if you happen to have some tragic god introducing you, then there is an examination to see if you know your subjects.
καὶ τῷ μὲν πλουσίῳ ἡ διατριβὴ οὐκ ἀηδὴς ἐπαινουμένῳ καὶ εὐδαιμονιζομένῳ, σοὶ δὲ ὁ ὑπὲρ τῆς ψυχῆς ἀγὼν καὶ ὑπὲρ ἅπαντος τοῦ βίου τότε προκεῖσθαι δοκεῖ· ὑπεισέρχεται γὰρ εἰκότως τὸ μηδʼ ὑπʼ ἄλλου ἂν καταδεχθῆναι πρὸς τοῦ προτέρου ἀποβληθέντα καὶ δόξαντα εἶναι ἀδόκιμον.
And for the rich man, this pastime is not unpleasant, since he is praised and congratulated, but to you, a contest for your life and for your entire existence seems then to lie before you; for the thought naturally steals upon you that you would not be received even by anyone else if you are rejected by the first and deemed unfit.
ἀνάγκη τοίνυν εἰς μυρία διαιρεθῆναι τότε, τοῖς μὲν ἀντεξεταζομένοις φθονοῦντα, — τίθει γὰρ καὶ ἄλλους εἶναι τῶν αὐτῶν ἀντιποιουμένους — αὐτὸν δὲ πάντα ἐνδεῶς εἰρηκέναι νομίζοντα, φοβούμενον δὲ καὶ ἐλπίζοντα καὶ πρὸς τὸ ἐκείνου πρόσωπον ἀτενίζοντα καὶ εἰ μὲν ἐκφαυλίζοι τι τῶν λεγομένων, ἀπολλύμενον, εἰ δὲ μειδιῶν ἀκούοι, γεγηθότα καὶ εὔελπιν καθιστάμενον.
It is necessary then to be distracted into ten thousand things at that moment, envying those who are being examined against you—for assume that there are others also claiming the same—and thinking that you yourself have spoken everything inadequately, fearing and hoping, and gazing intently at his face, and if he should disparage any of the things said, being destroyed; but if he should listen smiling, rejoicing and becoming hopeful.
