§49Παρρησιάδης
ἰδού τις ἄλλος ὑπόπλατος ὥσπερ ἡμίτομος ἰχθὺς πρόσεισιν, ψῆττά τις, κεχηνὼς εἰς τὸ ἄγκιστρον·
Parresiades Look, another flat fish, looking like it's cut in half, is approaching, some kind of flatfish, gaping at the hook.
κατέπιεν, ἔχεται, ἀνεσπάσθω.
He swallowed it, he is caught, let him be pulled up.
τίς ἐστιν;
Who is he?
Ἔλεγχος
ὁ Πλατωνικὸς εἶναι λέγων.
Refutation The one who claims to be a Platonist.
Παρρησιάδης
καὶ σύ, ὦ κατάρατε, ἥκεις ἐπὶ τὸ χρυσίον;
Parresiades And you, cursed one, have you come for the gold?
τί φής, ὦ Πλάτων;
What do you say, Plato?
τί ποιῶμεν αὐτόν;
What should we do with him?
§50Πλάτων
ἀπὸ τῆς αὐτῆς πέτρας καὶ οὗτος· ἐπʼ ἄλλον καθείσθω.
Plato From the same rock with this one too; let it be cast for another.

καὶ μὴν ὁρῶ τινα πάγκαλον προσιόντα, ὡς ἂν ἐν βυθῷ δόξειεν, ποικίλον τὴν χρόαν, ταινίας τινὰς ἐπὶ τοῦ νώτου ἐπιχρύσους ἔχοντα.
Parresiades And indeed I see a very beautiful one approaching, as it might seem to be in the deep, variegated in color, having some gilded stripes on its back.

Ἔλεγχος
ὁ τὸν Ἀριστοτέλη προσποιούμενος οὗτός ἐστιν.
Refutation This is the one pretending to be Aristotle.
Παρρησιάδης
ἦλθεν, εἶτα πάλιν ἄπεισιν.
Parresiades He came, then he goes away again.
περισκοπεῖ ἀκριβῶς, αὖθις ἐπανῆλθεν, ἔχανεν, εἴληπται, ἀνιμήσθω.
He looks around carefully, he came back again, he gaped, he is caught, let him be hauled up.
Ἀριστοτέλης
μὴ ἀνέρῃ με, ὦ Παρρησιάδη, περὶ αὐτοῦ· ἀγνοῶ γὰρ ὅστις ἐστίν.

ἀλλʼ ἢν ἰδού, πολλούς που τοὺς ἰχθῦς ὁρῶ κατὰ ταὐτὸν ὁμόχροας, ἀκανθώδεις καὶ τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν ἐκτετραχυσμένους, ἐχίνων δυσληπτοτέρους.
Parresiades But look, I see many fish of the same color together, thorny and rough on the surface, harder to catch than sea urchins.
ἦ που σαγήνης ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς δεήσει;
Will we perhaps need a dragnet for them?
Φιλοσοφία
ἀλλʼ οὐ πάρεστιν.

κάθες, εἰ δοκεῖ, σιδηρώσας γε πρότερον ἐπὶ πολὺ τῆς ὁρμιᾶς, ὡς μὴ ἀποπρίσῃ τοῖς ὀδοῦσι καταπιὼν τὸ χρυσίον.
Refutation Cast it, if you like, having first reinforced much of the line with wire, so that he may not bite it off with his teeth after swallowing the gold.

καθῆκα.
Parresiades I have cast it.
καὶ σὺ δέ, ὦ Πόσειδον, ταχεῖαν ἐπιτέλει τὴν ἄγραν.

βαβαί, μάχονται περὶ τοῦ δελέατος, καὶ οἱ μὲν συνάμα πολλοὶ περιτρώγουσι τὴν ἰσχάδα, οἱ δὲ προσφύντες ἔχονται τοῦ χρυσίου.
Oh, they are fighting over the bait, and many of them are nibbling the fig together, while others are clinging to the gold.
εὖ ἔχει· περιεπάρη τις μάλα καρτερός.
Good, a very strong one has been hooked.
φέρʼ ἴδω τίνος ἐπώνυμον σεαυτὸν εἶναι λέγεις;
Let me see, whose namesake do you say you are?
καίτοι γελοῖός εἰμι ἀναγκάζων ἰχθὺν λαλεῖν· ἄφωνοι γὰρ οὗτοί γε.
Yet I am ridiculous, forcing a fish to speak; for these are indeed voiceless.
ἀλλὰ σύ, ὦ Ἔλεγχε, εἰπὲ ὅντινα ἔχει διδάσκαλον αὐτοῦ.
But you, Refutation, tell me who his teacher is.

Χρύσιππον τουτονί.

Παρρησιάδης
μανθάνω· διότι χρυσίον προσῆν, οἶμαι, τῷ ὀνόματι.
Parresiades I understand; because gold was in his name, I suppose.
σὺ δʼ οὖν, Χρύσιππε, πρὸς τῆς Ἀθηνᾶς εἰπέ, οἶσθα τοὺς ἄνδρας ἢ τοιαῦτα παραινεῖς αὐτοῖς ποιεῖν;
At any rate, Chrysippus, by Athena tell me, do you know these men, or do you advise them to do such things?
Χρύσιππος
νὴ Δίʼ, ὑβριστικὰ ἐρωτᾷς, ὦ Παρρησιάδη, προσήκειν τι ἡμῖν ὑπολαμβάνων τοιούτους ὄντας.
Chrysippus By Zeus, you ask insulting questions, Parresiades, supposing that such men have anything to do with us.
Παρρησιάδης
εὖ γε, ὦ Χρύσιππε, γενναῖος εἶ.
Parresiades Well said, Chrysippus, you are noble.
οὗτος δὲ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπὶ κεφαλὴν μετὰ τῶν ἄλλων, ἐπεὶ καὶ ἀκανθώδης ἐστί, καὶ δέος μὴ διαπαρῇ τις τὸν λαιμὸν ἐσθίων.
Let this one too go headlong with the others, since he is also thorny, and there is fear lest someone pierce his throat while eating him.
§52Φιλοσοφία
ἅλις, ὦ Παρρησιάδη, τῆς ἄγρας, μὴ καί τίς σοι, οἷοι πολλοί εἰσιν, οἴχηται ἀποσπάσας τὸ χρυσίον καὶ τὸ ἄγκιστρον, εἶτά σε ἀποτῖσαι τῇ ἱερείᾳ δεήσῃ.
Philosophy Enough of the catch, Parresiades, lest someone, as there are many, run off having snatched the gold and the hook, and then you have to pay the priestess.
ὥστε ἡμεῖς μὲν ἀπίωμεν περιπατήσουσαι· καιρὸς δὲ καὶ ὑμᾶς ἀπιέναι ὅθεν ἥκετε, μὴ καὶ ὑπερήμεροι γένησθε τῆς προθεσμίας.
So let us go away for a walk; and it is time for you to go back where you came from, lest you become overdue for your trial.
σφὼ δέ, σὺ καὶ ὁ Ἔλεγχος, ὦ Παρρησιάδη, ἐν κύκλῳ ἐπὶ πάντας αὐτοὺς ἰόντες ἢ στεφανοῦτε ἢ ἐγκάετε, ὡς ἔφην.
And you two, you and Refutation, Parresiades, go around to all of them in a circle and either crown them or brand them, as I said.
Παρρησιάδης
ἔσται ταῦτα, ὦ Φιλοσοφία.
Parresiades This shall be done, Philosophy.
χαίρετε, ὦ βέλτιστοι ἀνδρῶν.

ἡμεῖς δὲ κατίωμεν, ὦ Ἔλεγχε, καὶ τελῶμεν τὰ παρηγγελμένα.
And let us go down, Refutation, and perform what was ordered.

ποῖ δὲ καὶ πρῶτον ἀπιέναι δεήσει;
Refutation Where must we go first?
μῶν εἰς τὴν Ἀκαδημίαν ἢ εἰς τὴν Στοὰν ἢ ἀπὸ τοῦ Λυκείου ποιησώμεθα τὴν ἀρχήν;
Shall we make our beginning from the Academy, or the Stoa, or the Lyceum?
Παρρησιάδης
οὐδὲν διοίσει τοῦτο.
Parresiades That will make no difference.
πλὴν οἶδά γε ἐγὼ ὡς ὅποι ποτʼ ἂν ἀπέλθωμεν, ὀλίγων μὲν τῶν στεφάνων, πολλῶν δὲ τῶν καυτηρίων δεησόμεθα.
