τί σοι τοὔνομα;
Hermes What is your name?
Ἀγοράστης
Δίων Συρακούσιος.
Buyer Dion of Syracuse.
Ἑρμῆς
ἄγε λαβὼν ἀγαθῇ τύχῃ.
Hermes Go and take him, with good fortune.
τὸν Ἐπικούρειον σὲ ἤδη καλῶ.
Now I call you, the Epicurean.
τίς ὠνήσεται τοῦτον;
Who will buy this one?
ἔστι μὲν τοῦ γελῶντος ἐκείνου μαθητὴς καὶ τοῦ μεθύοντος, οὓς μικρῷ πρόσθεν ἀπεκηρύττομεν.
He is a disciple of that laughing one and of the drunken one, whom we offered for sale a little while ago.
ἓν δὲ πλέον οἶδεν αὐτῶν, παρʼ ὅσον δυσσεβέστερος τυγχάνει· τὰ δὲ ἄλλα ἡδὺς καὶ λιχνείᾳ φίλος.
But he knows one thing more than they, in as much as he happens to be more impious; otherwise, he is pleasant and a friend of gluttony.
Ἀγοράστης
τίς ἡ τιμή;
Buyer What is the price?
Ἑρμῆς
δύο μναῖ.
Hermes Two minae.
Ἀγοράστης
λάμβανε·
Buyer Take it.
τὸ δεῖνα δέ, ὅπως εἰδῶ, τίσι χαίρει τῶν ἐδεσμάτων;
But by the way, so that I may know, what kinds of food does he delight in?
Ἑρμῆς
τὰ γλυκέα σιτεῖται καὶ τὰ μελιτώδη καὶ μάλιστά γε τὰς ἰσχάδας.
Hermes He eats sweet things and honeyed things, and especially dried figs.
Ἀγοράστης
χαλεπὸν οὐδέν· ὠνησόμεθα γὰρ αὐτῷ παλάθας τῶν Καρικῶν.
Buyer No trouble at all; for we will buy him Carian fig-cakes.
§20Ζεύς
ἄλλον κάλει, τὸν ἐν χρῷ κουρίαν ἐκεῖνον, τὸν σκυθρωπόν, τὸν ἀπὸ τῆς στοᾶς.
Zeus Call another, that one with his hair cropped close to the skin, the gloomy one from the Stoa.
Ἑρμῆς
εὖ λέγεις· ἐοίκασι γὰρ πολύ τι πλῆθος αὐτὸν περιμένειν τῶν ἐπὶ τὴν ἀγορὰν ἀπηντηκότων.
Hermes You speak well; for a very large crowd of those who have met in the market seems to be waiting for him.
αὐτὴν τὴν ἀρετὴν πωλῶ, τῶν βίων τὸν τελειότατον.
I sell Virtue herself, the most perfect of lives.
τίς ἅπαντα μόνος εἰδέναι θέλει;
Who wishes to be the only one to know all things?
Ἀγοράστης
πῶς τοῦτο φής;
Buyer How do you say this?
Ἑρμῆς
ὅτι μόνος οὗτος σοφός, μόνος καλός, μόνος δίκαιος ἀνδρεῖος βασιλεὺς ῥήτωρ πλούσιος νομοθέτης καὶ τὰ ἄλλα ὁπόσα ἐστίν.
Hermes Because he alone is wise, he alone is beautiful, he alone is just, courageous, king, orator, rich, lawgiver, and whatever else there is.
Ἀγοράστης
οὐκοῦν καὶ μάγειρος μόνος, καὶ νὴ Δία γε σκυτοδέψης ἢ τέκτων καὶ τὰ τοιαῦτα;
Buyer Therefore, is he also alone a cook, and by Zeus, a shoemaker or carpenter and suchlike?
Ἑρμῆς
ἔοικεν.
Hermes It seems so.
§21Ἀγοράστης
ἐλθέ, ὦγαθέ, καὶ λέγε πρὸς τὸν ὠνητὴν ἐμὲ ποῖός τις εἶ, καὶ πρῶτον εἰ οὐκ ἄχθῃ πιπρασκόμενος καὶ δοῦλος ὤν.
Buyer Come, my good man, and tell me, your buyer, what sort of person you are, and first of all, if you are not annoyed at being sold and being a slave.
Χρύσιππος
οὐδαμῶς·
Chrysippus Not at all; for these things are not in our power.
οὐ γὰρ ἐφʼ ἡμῖν ταῦτά ἐστιν. ἃ δὲ οὐκ ἐφʼ ἡμῖν, ἀδιάφορα εἶναι συμβέβηκεν.
And things that are not in our power happen to be indifferent (adiaphora).
Ἀγοράστης
οὐ μανθάνω ᾗ καὶ λέγεις.
Buyer I do not understand what you mean.
Χρύσιππος
τί φής;
Chrysippus What do you say?
οὐ μανθάνεις ὅτι τῶν τοιούτων τὰ μέν ἐστι προηγμένα, τὰ δʼ ἀνάπαλιν ἀποπροηγμένα;
Do you not understand that of such things some are preferred (proegmena), and on the contrary, others are rejected (apoproegmena)?
Ἀγοράστης
οὐδὲ νῦν μανθάνω.
Buyer Even now I do not understand.
Χρύσιππος
εἰκότως· οὐ γὰρ εἶ συνήθης τοῖς ἡμετέροις ὀνόμασιν οὐδὲ τὴν καταληπτικὴν φαντασίαν ἔχεις, ὁ δὲ σπουδαῖος ὁ τὴν λογικὴν θεωρίαν ἐκμαθὼν οὐ μόνον ταῦτα οἶδεν, ἀλλὰ καὶ σύμβαμα καὶ παρασύμβαμα ὁποῖα καὶ ὁπόσον ἀλλήλων διαφέρει.
Chrysippus Naturally; for you are not accustomed to our terms, nor do you have the comprehending presentation (kataleptike phantasia). But the virtuous man, who has thoroughly learned logical theory, not only knows these things, but also what sort of things a coincidental predicate (symbama) and a sub-coincidental predicate (parasymbama) are, and how much they differ from one another.
Ἀγοράστης
πρὸς τῆς σοφίας, μὴ φθονήσῃς κἂν τοῦτο εἰπεῖν, τί τὸ σύμβαμα καὶ τὸ παρασύμβαμα·
Buyer By wisdom, do not grudge to tell me even this: what is the coincidental predicate and the sub-coincidental predicate?
καὶ γὰρ οὐκ οἶδʼ ὅπως ἐπλήγην ὑπὸ τοῦ ῥυθμοῦ τῶν ὀνομάτων.
For indeed, I know not how I was struck by the rhythm of the words.
Χρύσιππος
ἀλλʼ οὐδεὶς φθόνος·
Chrysippus Indeed, there is no grudge.
ἢν γάρ τις χωλὸς ὢν αὐτῷ ἐκείνῳ τῷ χωλῷ ποδὶ προσπταίσας λίθῳ τραῦμα ἐξ ἀφανοῦς λάβῃ, ὁ τοιοῦτος εἶχε μὲν δήπου σύμβαμα τὴν χωλείαν, τὸ τραῦμα δὲ παρασύμβαμα προσέλαβεν.
For if someone who is lame should stumble with that very lame foot against a stone and receive a wound unexpectedly, such a person had, to be sure, the lameness as a coincidental predicate (symbama), and received the wound as a sub-coincidental predicate (parasymbama) in addition.
§22Ἀγοράστης
ὢ τῆς ἀγχινοίας·
Buyer What cleverness!
τί δὲ ἄλλο μάλιστα φὴς εἰδέναι;
And what else do you claim to know best?
Χρύσιππος
τὰς τῶν λόγων πλεκτάνας αἷς συμποδίζω τοὺς προσομιλοῦντας καὶ ἀποφράττω καὶ σιωπᾶν ποιῶ, φιμὸν ἀτεχνῶς αὐτοῖς περιτιθείς· ὄνομα δὲ τῇ δυνάμει ταύτῃ ὁ ἀοίδιμος συλλογισμός.
Chrysippus The webs of arguments with which I entangle those who converse with me, and block them, and make them keep silent, putting a muzzle absolutely on them; and the name of this power is the celebrated syllogism.
Ἀγοράστης
Ἡράκλεις, ἄμαχόν τινα καὶ βίαιον λέγεις.
Buyer By Heracles, you speak of something invincible and violent.
Χρύσιππος
σκόπει γοῦν· ἔστι σοι παιδίον;
Chrysippus Consider then: do you have a child?
Ἀγοράστης
τί μήν;
Buyer Of course.
Χρύσιππος
τοῦτο ἤν πως κροκόδειλος ἁρπάσῃ πλησίον τοῦ ποταμοῦ πλαζόμενον εὑρών, κᾆτά σοι ἀποδώσειν ὑπισχνῆται αὐτό, ἢν εἴπῃς τἀληθὲς ὅ τι δέδοκται αὐτῷ περὶ τῆς ἀποδόσεως τοῦ βρέφους, τί φήσεις αὐτὸν ἐγνωκέναι;
Chrysippus If a crocodile should somehow snatch this child, finding it wandering near the river, and then promise to restore it to you if you tell the truth as to what has been decided by him concerning the return of the baby, what will you say he has decided?
Ἀγοράστης
δυσαπόκριτον ἐρωτᾷς.
Buyer You ask a question difficult to answer.
ἀπορῶ γὰρ ὁπότερον εἰπὼν ἀπολάβοιμι.
For I am at a loss as to which I should say to get it back.
ἀλλὰ σὺ πρὸς Διὸς ἀποκρινάμενος ἀνάσωσαί μοι τὸ παιδίον, μὴ καὶ φθάσῃ αὐτὸ καταπιών.
But you, by Zeus, answer for me and rescue my child, lest he should swallow it down first.
Χρύσιππος
θάρρει· καὶ ἄλλα γάρ σε διδάξομαι θαυμασιώτερα.
Chrysippus Have courage; for I will teach you other things even more wonderful.
Ἀγοράστης
τὰ ποῖα;
Buyer What sort of things?
Χρύσιππος
τὸν θερίζοντα καὶ τὸν κυριεύοντα καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσι τὴν Ἠλέκτραν καὶ τὸν ἐγκεκαλυμμένον.
Chrysippus The Reaper, and the Master, and above all, Electra and the Veiled One.
Ἀγοράστης
τίνα τοῦτον τὸν ἐγκεκαλυμμένον ἢ τίνα τὴν Ἠλέκτραν λέγεις;
Buyer Who is this Veiled One or who is Electra of whom you speak?
Χρύσιππος
Ἠλέκτραν μὲν ἐκείνην τὴν πάνυ, τὴν Ἀγαμέμνονος, ἣ τὰ αὐτὰ οἶδέ τε ἅμα καὶ οὐκ οἶδε·
Chrysippus Electra is that very famous daughter of Agamemnon, who at the same time knows and does not know the same things.
παρεστῶτος γὰρ αὐτῇ τοῦ Ὀρέστου ἔτι ἀγνῶτος οἶδε μὲν Ὀρέστην, ὅτι ἀδελφὸς αὐτῆς, ὅτι δὲ οὗτος Ὀρέστης ἀγνοεῖ.
For when Orestes stands by her, still unrecognized, she knows Orestes, that he is her brother, but that this man is Orestes she does not know.
τὸν δʼ αὖ ἐγκεκαλυμμένον καὶ πάνυ θαυμαστὸν ἀκούσῃ λόγον·
And again, concerning the Veiled One, you will hear a most wonderful argument.
ἀπόκριναι γάρ μοι, τὸν πατέρα οἶσθα τὸν σεαυτοῦ;
For answer me: do you know your own father?
Ἀγοράστης
ναί.
Buyer Yes.
Χρύσιππος
τί οὖν;
Chrysippus What then?
ἤν σοι παραστήσας τινὰ ἐγκεκαλυμμένον ἔρωμαι, τοῦτον οἶσθα; τί φήσεις;
If I should place some veiled person beside you and ask, "Do you know this man?" what will you say?
Ἀγοράστης
δηλαδὴ ἀγνοεῖν.
Buyer Clearly, that I do not know him.
