When Cassander had departed from Aetolia, about three thousand of the Aetolians banded together and, having surrounded Agrinium with a palisade, besieged it. The inhabitants of the place made an agreement to surrender the city on the condition that they themselves should depart after obtaining safety; and they indeed went away trusting in the treaty, but the Aetolians, violating the agreement, pursued those who expected to suffer nothing terrible, and, except for a few, slaughtered them all.
§19.68.2ὁ δὲ Κάσανδρος παραγενόμενος εἰς Μακεδονίαν, καὶ πυθόμενος πολεμεῖσθαι τὰς ἐν Καρίᾳ πόλεις ὅσαι συνεμάχουν τοῖς περὶ Πτολεμαῖον καὶ Σέλευκον, ἐξέπεμψε δύναμιν εἰς τὴν Καρίαν, ἅμα μὲν βουλόμενος βοηθεῖν τοῖς συμμάχοις, ἅμα δὲ σπεύδων εἰς περισπασμοὺς ἐμβαλεῖν Ἀντίγονον, ἵνα μὴ σχολὴν ἔχῃ διαβαίνειν εἰς τὴν Εὐρώπην.
And Cassander, having arrived in Macedonia and learned that all the cities in Caria which were allied with the party of Ptolemy and Seleucus were being attacked, sent an army into Caria, wanting on the one hand to assist the allies, and on the other hand hastening to throw Antigonus into distractions, so that he might not have leisure to cross over into Europe.
§19.68.3ἔγραψε δὲ καὶ πρὸς Δημήτριον τὸν Φαληρέα καὶ Διονύσιον τὸν φρουροῦντα τὴν Μουνυχίαν, προστάττων εἴκοσι ναῦς εἰς Λῆμνον ἐκπέμψαι.
He also wrote to Demetrius of Phalerum and Dionysius, the commander of the garrison at Munychia, ordering them to dispatch twenty ships to Lemnos.
ἀποστειλάντων δʼ αὐτῶν εὐθὺς τὰ σκάφη καὶ ναύαρχον ἐπʼ αὐτῶν Ἀριστοτέλη οὗτος μὲν καταπλεύσας εἰς Λῆμνον καὶ μεταπεμψάμενος Σέλευκον μετὰ στόλου τοὺς Λημνίους ἔπειθεν ἀποστῆναι τῶν περὶ Ἀντίγονον· οὐ προσεχόντων δʼ αὐτῶν τήν τε χώραν ἐδῄωσε καὶ τὴν πόλιν περιχαρακώσας ἐπολιόρκει.
When they had immediately sent the vessels and Aristotle as commander over them, the latter, sailing to Lemnos and summoning Seleucus with his fleet, tried to persuade the Lemnians to revolt from the party of Antigonus; but since they paid no attention, he ravaged the territory and, having surrounded the city with a palisade, besieged it.
§19.68.4μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα Σέλευκος μὲν ἀπέπλευσεν εἰς Κῶν, Διοσκουρίδης δὲ κατασταθεὶς ναύαρχος ὑπʼ Ἀντιγόνου, πυθόμενος τὸν πλοῦν Σελεύκου, κατῆρεν εἰς Λῆμνον καὶ τὸν μὲν Ἀριστοτέλη ἐξέβαλεν ἐκ τῆς νήσου, τῶν δὲ νεῶν τὰς πλείους αὐτάνδρους εἷλε.
After this, Seleucus sailed away to Cos, but Dioscurides, who had been appointed admiral by Antigonus, having learned of the voyage of Seleucus, landed at Lemnos, drove Aristotle out of the island, and captured most of the ships with their crews.
§19.68.5Κάσανδρος δὲ καὶ Πρεπέλαος ἀφηγοῦντο μὲν τῆς ὑπὸ Κασάνδρου πεμφθείσης δυνάμεως εἰς τὴν Καρίαν, πυθόμενοι δὲ Πτολεμαῖον τὸν Ἀντιγονου στρατηγὸν τὴν δύναμιν εἰς παραχειμασίαν διῃρηκέναι καὶ αὐτὸν ἀσχολεῖσθαι περὶ τὴν ταφὴν τοῦ πατρός, Εὐπόλεμον ἀπέστειλαν ἐνεδρεῦσαι τοῖς πολεμίοις περὶ Κάπριμα τῆς Καρίας· συνεξέπεμψαν δʼ αὐτῷ πεζοὺς μὲν ὀκτακισχιλίους, §19.68.6ἱππεῖς δὲ διακοσίους.
Cassander and Prepelaus were commanding the army sent into Caria by Cassander, but when they learned that Ptolemy, the general of Antigonus, had distributed his army into winter quarters and was himself occupied with the burial of his father, they sent Eupolemus to lie in ambush for the enemy near Caprima in Caria; and they sent along with him eight thousand infantry and two hundred cavalry.
καθʼ ὃν δὴ χρόνον Πτολεμαῖος παρά τινων αὐτομόλων ἀκούσας τὴν προαίρεσιν τῶν πολεμίων ἤθροισε μὲν τῶν πλησίον χειμαζόντων στρατιωτῶν πεζοὺς μὲν ὀκτακισχιλίους τριακοσίους, §19.68.7ἱππεῖς δʼ ἑξακοσίους.
At this very time, Ptolemy, having heard from some deserters the purpose of the enemy, assembled from the soldiers wintering nearby eight thousand three hundred infantry and six hundred cavalry.
ἀνελπίστως δὲ περὶ μέσας νύκτας ἐπιβαλὼν τῷ χάρακι τῶν ἐναντίων καὶ καταλαβὼν ἀφυλάκτους καὶ κοιμωμένους αὐτόν τε τὸν Εὐπόλεμον ἐζώγρησε καὶ τοὺς στρατιώτας συνηνάγκασε παραδοῦναι σφᾶς αὐτούς.
Falling unexpectedly upon the camp of his opponents around midnight, and catching them unguarded and asleep, he captured Eupolemus himself alive and compelled the soldiers to surrender themselves.
τὰ μὲν οὖν συμβάντα περὶ τοὺς ἀποσταλέντας ὑπὸ Κασάνδρου στρατηγοὺς εἰς τὴν Ἀσίαν τοιαῦτʼ ἦν.
Such, then, were the events that befell the generals sent into Asia by Cassander.
