§18.62.1παραδόξου δὲ καὶ ταχείας τῆς περὶ τὸν Εὐμενῆ γενομένης αὐξήσεως Πτολεμαῖος μὲν μετὰ στόλου πλεύσας εἰς Ζεφύριον τῆς Κιλικίας διεπέμπετο πρὸς τοὺς τῶν ἀργυρασπίδων ἡγεμόνας, παρακαλῶν μὴ προσέχειν τῷ Εὐμενεῖ, καθʼ οὗ πάντες Μακεδόνες θάνατον κατέγνωσαν.
As the growth of power around Eumenes occurred unexpectedly and rapidly, Ptolemy, having sailed with a fleet to Zephyrium in Cilicia, sent messengers to the commanders of the Silver Shields, urging them not to pay attention to Eumenes, against whom all Macedonians had decreed death.
§18.62.2ὁμοίως δὲ πρὸς τοὺς ἐπὶ τῶν ἐν Κυΐνδοις φρουρίων τεταγμένους ἐξέπεμψε, διαμαρτυρόμενος μὴ διδόναι μηδὲν τῶν χρημάτων Εὐμενεῖ καὶ τὴν ἀσφάλειαν αὐτοῖς ἐπηγγείλατο παρέξεσθαι.
Likewise he sent to those stationed over the fortresses in Quinda, protesting that they should not give any of the money to Eumenes, and he promised to provide security to them.
ἀλλὰ τούτῳ μὲν οὐδεὶς προσεῖχε διὰ τὸ τοὺς βασιλεῖς καὶ τὸν ἐπιμελητὴν αὐτῶν Πολυπέρχοντα, ἔτι δὲ Ὀλυμπιάδα τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρου μητέρα γεγραφέναι πάντα ὑπηρετεῖν Εὐμενεῖ, ὡς ὄντι τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοκράτορι στρατηγῷ.
But no one paid attention to this, because the kings and their guardian Polyperchon, and also Olympias, the mother of Alexander, had written to serve Eumenes in all things, as he was the commander-in-chief of the kingdom with full powers.
§18.62.3μάλιστα δʼ Ἀντιγόνῳ δυσηρέστει τότε τὰ περὶ τὴν Εὐμενοῦς προαγωγὴν καὶ τὸ μέγεθος τῆς περὶ αὐτὸν συνισταμένης ἐξουσίας· ὑπελάμβανε γὰρ ὑπὸ τοῦ Πολυπέρχοντος τοῦτον ἑαυτῷ κατασκευάζεσθαι μέγιστον ἀντίπαλον ἀποστάτῃ γεγονότι τῆς βασιλείας.
Antigonus, most of all, was displeased at that time by the advancement of Eumenes and the magnitude of the power being established around him; for he suspected that this man was being set up by Polyperchon as the greatest rival to himself, who had become a rebel against the kingdom.
§18.62.4διόπερ κρίνας ἐπιβουλὴν συστήσασθαι κατʼ αὐτοῦ προεχειρίσατο τῶν φίλων Φιλώταν καὶ τούτῳ μὲν ἔδωκεν ἐπιστολὴν γεγραμμένην πρός τε τοὺς ἀργυράσπιδας καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους τοὺς μετʼ Εὐμενοῦς Μακεδόνας, συνεξέπεμψε δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ ἄλλους τριάκοντα Μακεδόνας τῶν περιέργων καὶ λάλων, οἷς ἦν προστεταγμένον κατʼ ἰδίαν ἐντυχεῖν τοῖς ἡγεμόσι τῶν ἀργυρασπίδων Ἀντιγένει καὶ Τευτάμῳ καὶ διὰ τούτων συστήσασθαί τινα κατʼ Εὐμενοῦς ἐπιβουλήν, δωρεάς τε μεγάλας ἐπαγγελλομένους καὶ σατραπείας μείζονας, ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ τῶν ἀργυρασπίδων τοῖς γνωριζομένοις καὶ πολίταις ἐντυγχάνειν καὶ διαφθείρειν δωρεαῖς πρὸς τὴν κατʼ Εὐμενοῦς ἐπιβουλήν.
Therefore, having decided to organize a plot against him, he selected Philotas from among his friends and to him he gave a letter written to the Silver Shields and the other Macedonians with Eumenes; and he sent along with him thirty other Macedonians of the busybody and talkative sort, to whom it had been commanded to meet privately with Antigenes and Teutamus, the commanders of the Silver Shields, and through them to organize some plot against Eumenes, promising great gifts and larger satrapies, and likewise to meet with those of the Silver Shields who were well-known and fellow citizens, and to corrupt them with gifts for the plot against Eumenes.
§18.62.5τῶν μὲν οὖν ἄλλων οὐδένα πεῖσαι κατίσχυσαν, Τεύταμος δὲ ὁ τῶν ἀργυρασπίδων ἡγεμὼν διαφθαρεὶς ἐπεβάλετο καὶ τὸν συνάρχοντα Ἀντιγένην πεῖσαι κοινωνῆσαι τῆς πράξεως.
Thus they were unable to persuade any of the others, but Teutamus, the commander of the Silver Shields, having been corrupted, attempted to persuade also his fellow commander Antigenes to share in the deed.
§18.62.6ὁ δʼ Ἀντιγένης, συνέσει καὶ πίστεως βεβαιότητι διαφέρων, οὐ μόνον ἀντεῖπεν, ἀλλὰ καὶ μετέπεισε τὸν προδιεφθαρμένον.
But Antigenes, who excelled in intelligence and steadfastness of loyalty, not only spoke against it, but also persuaded the one who had already been corrupted to change his mind.
ἐδίδαξε γὰρ αὐτὸν συμφέρειν ζῆν τὸν Εὐμενῆ μᾶλλον ἢ τὸν Ἀντίγονον· §18.62.7ἐκεῖνον μὲν γὰρ εἰς πλεῖον ἰσχύσαντα παρελεῖσθαι τὰς σατραπείας αὐτῶν καὶ ἀντικαταστήσειν ἐκ τῶν αὐτοῦ φίλων, Εὐμενῆ δὲ ξένον ὄντα μηδέποτʼ ἰδιοπραγῆσαι τολμήσειν, ἀλλὰ στρατηγὸν ὄντα φίλοις αὐτοῖς χρήσεσθαι καὶ συμπράξασι φυλάξειν αὐτοῖς τὰς σατραπείας, τάχα δὲ καὶ ἄλλας προσδώσειν.
For he explained to him that it was more advantageous that Eumenes should live rather than Antigonus; for if that man grew more powerful, he would take away their satrapies and replace them with his own friends; whereas Eumenes, being a foreigner, would never dare to act on his own behalf, but as general, he would treat them as his friends and would preserve the satrapies for them who co-operated with him, and would perhaps even grant others in addition.
οἱ μὲν οὖν τὰς κατʼ Εὐμενοῦς ἐπιβουλὰς κατασκευάζοντες ἀπέτυχον τὸν προειρημένον
Thus those who were preparing the plots against Eumenes failed in the aforementioned [manner].
