§5.72.1καταδειχθῆναι δὲ καὶ θυσίας αὐτῷ συντελεῖν ὑπὲρ τοὺς ἄλλους ἅπαντας, καὶ μετὰ τὴν ἐκ γῆς μετάστασιν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐγγενέσθαι δόξας δικαίους ἐν ταῖς τῶν εὖ πεπονθότων ψυχαῖς, ὡς ἁπάντων τῶν γινομένων κατʼ οὐρανὸν οὗτος εἴη κύριος, λέγω δʼ ὄμβρων τε καὶ βροντῶν καὶ κεραυνῶν καὶ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν τοιούτων.
And they say that it was established to offer sacrifices to him surpassing all other men, and that after his departure from earth to heaven, there arose just opinions in the souls of those who had benefited [by him], that he was the lord of all things that happen in heaven, I mean of both rains and thunders and lightnings and other such things.
§5.72.2διόπερ αὐτὸν προσαγορευθῆναι Ζῆνα μὲν ἀπὸ τοῦ δοκεῖν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις αἴτιον εἶναι τοῦ ζῆν, ταῖς ἐκ τοῦ περιέχοντος εὐκρασίαις τοὺς καρποὺς ἀνάγοντα πρὸς τέλος, πατέρα δὲ διὰ τὴν φροντίδα καὶ τὴν εὔνοιαν τὴν εἰς ἅπαντας, ἔτι δὲ καὶ τὸ δοκεῖν ὥσπερ ἀρχηγὸν εἶναι τοῦ γένους τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὕπατον δὲ καὶ βασιλέα διὰ τὴν τῆς ἀρχῆς ὑπεροχήν, εὐβουλέα δὲ καὶ μητιέτην διὰ τὴν ἐν τῷ βουλεύεσθαι καλῶς σύνεσιν.
Wherefore they say he was called Zena from his appearing to men to be the cause of living (zen), as he brings the crops to maturity by the moderate temperatures of the surrounding atmosphere; and Father because of his care and goodwill towards all, and also because he seems to be as it were the founder of the race of men; and Highest and King because of the superiority of his rule; and Of Good Counsel and Wise because of his intelligence in counseling well.
§5.72.3μυθολογοῦσι δὲ καὶ τὴν Ἀθηνᾶν κατὰ τὴν Κρήτην ἐκ Διὸς ἐν ταῖς πηγαῖς τοῦ Τρίτωνος ποταμοῦ γεννηθῆναι· διὸ καὶ Τριτογένειαν ὀνομασθῆναι.
And they also relate in myth that Athena was born in Crete from Zeus at the sources of the river Triton; wherefore she was also named Tritogeneia.
ἔστι δὲ καὶ νῦν ἔτι περὶ τὰς πηγὰς ταύτας ἱερὸν ἅγιον τῆς θεοῦ ταύτης, ἐν ᾧ τόπῳ τὴν γένεσιν αὐτῆς ὑπάρξαι μυθολογοῦσι.
And there is even now near these sources a holy temple of this goddess, in which place they relate in myth that her birth occurred.
§5.72.4λέγουσι δὲ καὶ τοὺς γάμους τοῦ τε Διὸς καὶ τῆς Ἥρας ἐν τῇ Κνωσίων χώρᾳ γενέσθαι κατά τινα τόπον πλησίον τοῦ Θήρηνος ποταμοῦ, καθʼ ὃν νῦν ἱερόν ἐστιν, ἐν ᾧ θυσίας κατʼ ἐνιαυτὸν ἁγίους ὑπὸ τῶν ἐγχωρίων συντελεῖσθαι, καὶ τοὺς γάμους ἀπομιμεῖσθαι, καθάπερ ἐξ ἀρχῆς γενέσθαι παρεδόθησαν.
And they say that the marriage of Zeus and Hera also took place in the territory of Cnossus at a certain place near the river Theren, near which there is now a temple, in which holy sacrifices are offered annually by the inhabitants, and the marriage is imitated just as they were handed down to have occurred from the beginning.
§5.72.5τοῦ δὲ Διὸς ἐκγόνους φασὶ γενέσθαι θεὰς μὲν Ἀφροδίτην καὶ Χάριτας, πρὸς δὲ ταύταις Εἰλείθυιαν καὶ τὴν ταύτης συνεργὸν Ἄρτεμιν, καὶ τὰς προσαγορευομένας Ὥρας, Εὐνομίαν τε καὶ Δίκην, ἔτι δʼ Εἰρήνην καὶ Ἀθηνᾶν καὶ Μοῦσας, θεοὺς δὲ Ἥφαιστον καὶ Ἄρην καὶ Ἀπόλλωνα, πρὸς δὲ τούτοις Ἑρμῆν καὶ Διόνυσον καὶ Ἡρακλέα.
And they say that as offspring of Zeus there were born, as goddesses, Aphrodite and the Graces, and in addition to these, Eileithyia and her helper Artemis, and those called the Horae, both Eunomia and Dike, and further Eirene and Athena and the Muses; and as gods, Hephaestus and Ares and Apollo, and in addition to these, Hermes and Dionysus and Heracles.
