§5.71.1διενέγκαι δὲ τὸν θεὸν τοῦτον ἁπάντων ἀνδρείᾳ καὶ συνέσει καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ταῖς ἄλλαις ἁπάσαις ἀρεταῖς· διὸ καὶ παραλαβόντα τὴν βασιλείαν παρὰ τοῦ Κρόνου πλεῖστα καὶ μέγιστα τὸν ἀνθρώπινον βίον εὐεργετῆσαι.
And this god, they say, excelled all others in courage, intelligence, justice, and all other virtues; wherefore, having received the kingship from Cronus, he bestowed the greatest and most numerous benefits upon human life.
πρῶτον μὲν γὰρ ἁπάντων καταδεῖξαι περὶ τῶν ἀδικημάτων τὸ δίκαιον ἀλλήλοις διδόναι τοὺς ἀνθρώπους καὶ τοῦ βίᾳ τι πράττειν ἀποστῆσαι, κρίσει δὲ καὶ δικαστηρίῳ τὰς ἀμφισβητήσεις διαλύειν.
For first of all, he introduced the practice of men rendering justice to one another for their wrongdoings and turned them away from doing anything by force, resolving their disputes by judgment and court of law.
καθόλου δὲ τὰ περί τε τῆς εὐνομίας καὶ τῆς εἰρήνης προσαναπληρῶσαι, τοὺς μὲν ἀγαθοὺς πείθοντα, τοὺς δὲ φαύλους τῇ τιμωρίᾳ καὶ τῷ φόβῳ καταπληττόμενον.
In general, he supplementary filled up the matters concerning good order and peace, persuading the good, and terrifying the wicked by punishment and fear.
§5.71.2ἐπελθεῖν δʼ αὐτὸν καὶ τὴν οἰκουμένην σχεδὸν πᾶσαν τοὺς μὲν λῃστὰς καὶ ἀσεβεῖς ἀναιροῦντα, τὴν δʼ ἰσότητα καὶ τὴν δημοκρατίαν εἰσηγούμενον· ὅτε δή φασιν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς γίγαντας ἀνελεῖν, ἐν μὲν Κρήτῃ τοὺς περὶ Μύλινον, κατὰ δὲ τὴν Φρυγίαν τοὺς περὶ Τυφῶνα.
And they say that he traversed almost the entire inhabited world, destroying robbers and impious men, and introducing equality and democracy; at which time, they say, he also destroyed the Giants, those around Mylinus in Crete, and those around Typhon in Phrygia.
§5.71.3πρὸ δὲ τῆς μάχης τῆς πρὸς τοὺς ἐν Κρήτῃ γίγαντας λέγεται τὸν Δία θῦσαι βοῦν Ἡλίῳ καὶ Οὐρανῷ καὶ Γῇ· ἐπὶ δὲ τῶν ἱερῶν ἁπάντων φανῆναι τὰ περὶ τούτων ἐπικριθέντα ἐπισημαίνεται κράτος καὶ ἀπόστασις ἀπὸ τῶν πολεμίων πρὸς αὐτούς.
And before the battle against the Giants in Crete, Zeus is said to have sacrificed a bull to Helios, Uranus, and Ge; and on all the victims there appeared the signs which had been decided concerning these things, by which were signified power and the desertion of the enemy to them.
ἀκόλουθον δὲ τούτοις γενέσθαι τοῦ πολέμου τὸ τέλος· αὐτομολῆσαι μὲν γὰρ ἐκ τῶν πολεμίων Μουσαῖον, καὶ τυχεῖν ὡρισμένων τιμῶν, κατακοπῆναι δʼ ὑπὸ τῶν θεῶν ἅπαντας τοὺς ἀντιταξαμένους.
And the end of the war was in accordance with these; for Musaeus deserted from the enemy, and obtained specified honors, while all those who had arrayed themselves against them were cut down by the gods.
§5.71.4συστῆναι δὲ καὶ ἄλλους πολέμους αὐτῷ πρὸς γίγαντας, τῆς μὲν Μακεδονίας περὶ τὴν Παλλήνην, τῆς δʼ Ἰταλίας κατὰ τὸ πεδίον, ὃ τὸ μὲν παλαιὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ κατακεκαυμένου τόπου Φλεγραῖον ὠνομάζετο, κατὰ δὲ τοὺς ὕστερον χρόνους Κυμαῖον προσηγόρευον.
And other wars also arose for him against the Giants, in Macedonia near Pallene, and in Italy in the plain which in ancient times was named Phlegraean from the burnt place, but in later times they called Cumaean.
§5.71.5κολασθῆναι δὲ τοὺς γίγαντας ὑπὸ Διὸς διὰ τὴν εἰς τοὺς ἄλλους ἀνθρώπους παρανομίαν καὶ διὰ τὸ ταῖς τοῦ σώματος ὑπεροχαῖς καὶ ῥώμαις πεποιθότας καταδουλοῦσθαι μὲν τοὺς πλησιοχώρους, ἀπειθεῖν δὲ τοῖς περὶ τοῦ δικαίου τιθεμένοις νόμοις, πόλεμον δʼ ἐκφέρειν πρὸς τοὺς διὰ τὰς κοινὰς εὐεργεσίας ὑπὸ πάντων θεοὺς νομιζομένους.
And the Giants were punished by Zeus on account of their lawlessness against other men, and because, trusting in their superior size and strength of body, they enslaved their neighbors, and disobeyed the laws established concerning justice, and waged war against those who were regarded as gods by all on account of their common benefits.
§5.71.6τὸν δʼ οὖν Δία λέγουσι μὴ μόνον ἄρδην ἐξ ἀνθρώπων ἀφανίσαι τοὺς ἀσεβεῖς καὶ πονηρούς, ἀλλὰ καὶ τοῖς ἀρίστοις τῶν θεῶν καὶ ἡρώων, ἔτι δʼ ἀνδρῶν τὰς ἀξίας ἀπονεῖμαι τιμάς.
At all events, they say that Zeus not only utterly destroyed the impious and wicked from among men, but also assigned fitting honors to the best of the gods, heroes, and even men.
διὰ δὲ τὸ μέγεθος τῶν εὐεργεσιῶν καὶ τὴν ὑπεροχὴν τῆς δυνάμεως συμφώνως αὐτῷ παρὰ πάντων συγκεχωρῆσθαι τήν τε βασιλείαν εἰς τὸν ἀεὶ χρόνον καὶ τὴν οἴκησιν τὴν ἐν Ὀλύμπῳ.
And on account of the magnitude of his benefits and the superiority of his power, the kingship for all time and his dwelling on Olympus were unanimously granted to him by all.
