§5.55.1τὴν δὲ νῆσον τὴν ὀνομαζομένην Ῥόδον πρῶτοι κατῴκησαν οἱ προσαγορευόμενοι Τελχῖνες·
The island which is named Rhodes was first inhabited by those who are called Telchines.
οὗτοι δʼ ἦσαν υἱοὶ μὲν Θαλάττης, ὡς ὁ μῦθος παραδέδωκε, μυθολογοῦνται δὲ μετὰ Καφείρας τῆς Ὠκεανοῦ θυγατρὸς ἐκθρέψαι Ποσειδῶνα, Ῥέας αὐτοῖς παρακαταθεμένης τὸ βρέφος.
These, as the myth has handed down, were the sons of the Sea (Thalatta), and they are mythologized to have reared Poseidon along with Capheira, the daughter of Oceanus, Rhea having entrusted the infant to them.
§5.55.2γενέσθαι δʼ αὐτοὺς καὶ τεχνῶν τινων εὑρετὰς καὶ ἄλλων τῶν χρησίμων εἰς τὸν βίον τῶν ἀνθρώπων εἰσηγητάς.
It is said that they also became the discoverers of certain arts and the introducers of other things useful for the life of mankind.
ἀγάλματά τε θεῶν πρῶτοι κατασκευάσαι λέγονται, καί τινα τῶν ἀρχαίων ἀφιδρυμάτων ἀπʼ ἐκείνων ἐπωνομάσθαι· παρὰ μὲν γὰρ Λινδίοις Ἀπόλλωνα Τελχίνιον προσαγορευθῆναι, παρὰ δὲ Ἰαλυσίοις Ἥραν καὶ Νύμφας Τελχινίας, παρὰ δὲ Καμειρεῦσιν Ἥραν Τελχινίαν.
They are said to have been the first to fashion statues of the gods, and some of the ancient images are named after them; for among the Lindians, Apollo is addressed as Telchinius, and among the Ialysians, Hera and the Telchinian Nymphs, and among the Cameirians, Hera Telchinia.
§5.55.3λέγονται δʼ οὗτοι καὶ γόητες γεγονέναι καὶ παράγειν ὅτε βούλοιντο νέφη τε καὶ ὄμβρους καὶ χαλάζας, ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ χιόνα ἐφέλκεσθαι· ταῦτα δὲ καθάπερ καὶ τοὺς μάγους ποιεῖν ἱστοροῦσιν.
These men are also said to have been wizards, and to have brought on, whenever they wished, clouds and rains and hailstorms, and likewise to have drawn down snow; and they record that they did these things just as the magi do.
ἀλλάττεσθαι δὲ καὶ τὰς ἰδίας μορφάς, καὶ εἶναι φθονεροὺς ἐν τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ τῶν τεχνῶν.
They also say that they changed their own shapes, and were jealous in the teaching of their arts.
§5.55.4Ποσειδῶνα δὲ ἀνδρωθέντα ἐρασθῆναι Ἁλίας τῆς τῶν Τελχίνων ἀδελφῆς, καὶ μιχθέντα γεννῆσαι παῖδας ἓξ μὲν ἄρρενας, μίαν δὲ θυγατέρα Ῥόδον, ἀφʼ ἧς τὴν νῆσον ὀνομασθῆναι.
When Poseidon grew to manhood, he fell in love with Halia, the sister of the Telchines, and having united with her, begot six male children and one daughter, Rhodos, after whom the island was named.
§5.55.5γενέσθαι δὲ κατὰ τὸν καιρὸν τοῦτον ἐν τοῖς πρὸς ἕω μέρεσι τῆς νήσου τοὺς κληθέντας γίγαντας· ὅτε δὴ καὶ Ζεὺς λέγεται καταπεπολεμηκὼς Τιτᾶνας ἐρασθῆναι μιᾶς τῶν νυμφῶν Ἱμαλίας ὀνομαζομένης, καὶ τρεῖς ἐξ αὐτῆς τεκνῶσαι παῖδας, Σπαρταῖον, Κρόνιον, Κύτον.
At this time, there arose in the eastern parts of the island those who were called Giants; and at this very time, Zeus, having conquered the Titans, is said to have fallen in love with one of the nymphs named Himalia, and to have begotten by her three sons, Spartaeus, Cronius, and Cytus.
§5.55.6κατὰ δὲ τὴν τούτων ἡλικίαν φασὶν Ἀφροδίτην ἐκ Κυθήρων κομιζομένην εἰς Κύπρον καὶ προσορμιζομένην τῇ νήσῳ κωλυθῆναι ὑπὸ τῶν Ποσειδῶνος υἱῶν, ὄντων ὑπερηφάνων καὶ ὑβριστῶν· τῆς δὲ θεοῦ διὰ τὴν ὀργὴν ἐμβαλούσης αὐτοῖς μανίαν, μιγῆναι αὐτοὺς βίᾳ τῇ μητρὶ καὶ πολλὰ κακὰ δρᾶν τοὺς ἐγχωρίους.
When these had reached manhood, they say that Aphrodite, while journeying from Cythera to Cyprus and putting in at the island, was prevented by the sons of Poseidon, who were arrogant and insolent; and the goddess, because of her anger, cast madness upon them, so that they forced themselves upon their mother and did many evils to the local inhabitants.
§5.55.7Ποσειδῶνα δὲ τὸ γεγονὸς αἰσθόμενον τοὺς υἱοὺς κρύψαι κατὰ γῆς διὰ τὴν πεπραγμένην αἰσχύνην, οὓς κληθῆναι προσηῴους δαίμονας· ἁλίαν δὲ ῥίψασαν ἑαυτὴν εἰς τὴν θάλατταν Λευκοθέαν ὀνομασθῆναι καὶ τιμῆς ἀθανάτου τυχεῖν παρὰ τοῖς ἐγχωρίοις.
When Poseidon became aware of what had happened, he hid his sons under the earth because of the shameful deed they had committed, and they were called the Eastern Demons; and Halia threw herself into the sea and was named Leucothea, obtaining immortal honor among the local inhabitants.
