§5.32.1χρήσιμον δʼ ἐστὶ διορίσαι τὸ παρὰ πολλοῖς ἀγνοούμενον.
It is useful to distinguish what is unknown to many.
τοὺς γὰρ ὑπὲρ Μασσαλίας κατοικοῦντας ἐν τῷ μεσογείῳ καὶ τοὺς παρὰ τὰς Ἄλπεις, ἔτι δὲ τοὺς ἐπὶ τάδε τῶν Πυρηναίων ὀρῶν Κελτοὺς ὀνομάζουσι, τοὺς δʼ ὑπὲρ ταύτης τῆς Κελτικῆς εἰς τὰ πρὸς ἄρκτον νεύοντα μέρη παρά τε τὸν ὠκεανὸν καὶ τὸ Ἑρκύνιον ὄρος καθιδρυμένους καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἑξῆς μέχρι τῆς Σκυθίας Γαλάτας προσαγορεύουσιν· οἱ δὲ Ῥωμαῖοι πάλιν πάντα ταῦτα τὰ ἔθνη συλλήβδην μιᾷ προσηγορίᾳ περιλαμβάνουσιν, ὀνομάζοντες Γαλάτας ἅπαντας.
For those who dwell in the interior above Massalia and those near the Alps, and further those on this side of the Pyrenees, they call Celts, but those settled beyond this Celtic land in the parts facing north, both near the ocean and the Hercynian forest, and all those next in order as far as Scythia, they call Galatians; the Romans, on the other hand, embrace all these nations collectively under a single name, calling them all Galatians.
§5.32.2αἱ δὲ γυναῖκες τῶν Γαλατῶν οὐ μόνον τοῖς μεγέθεσι παραπλήσιοι τοῖς ἀνδράσιν εἰσίν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ταῖς ἀλκαῖς ἐνάμιλλοι.
The women of the Galatians are not only similar to the men in stature, but also equal to them in courage.
τὰ δὲ παιδία παρʼ αὐτοῖς ἐκ γενετῆς ὑπάρχει πολιὰ κατὰ τὸ πλεῖστον· προβαίνοντα δὲ ταῖς ἡλικίαις εἰς τὸ τῶν πατέρων χρῶμα ταῖς χρόαις μετασχηματίζεται.
Their children are for the most part white-haired from birth; but as they advance in age, they transform in color to the complexion of their fathers.
§5.32.3ἀγριωτάτων δʼ ὄντων τῶν ὑπὸ τὰς ἄρκτους κατοικούντων καὶ τῶν τῇ Σκυθίᾳ πλησιοχώρων, φασί τινας ἀνθρώπους ἐσθίειν, ὥσπερ καὶ τῶν Βρεττανῶν τοὺς κατοικοῦντας τὴν ὀνομαζομένην Ἴριν.
Since those who dwell under the north and those adjacent to Scythia are the most savage, they say that some of them eat humans, just as also do those of the Britons who inhabit the place called Iris.
§5.32.4διαβεβοημένης δὲ τῆς τούτων ἀλκῆς καὶ ἀγριότητος, φασί τινες ἐν τοῖς παλαιοῖς χρόνοις τοὺς τὴν Ἀσίαν ἅπασαν καταδραμόντας, ὀνομαζομένους δὲ Κιμμερίους, τούτους εἶναι, βραχὺ τοῦ χρόνου τὴν λέξιν φθείραντος ἐν τῇ τῶν καλουμένων Κίμβρων προσηγορίᾳ.
As the courage and savagery of these people is widely rumored, some say that those who overran all of Asia in ancient times, being called Cimmerians, are these very people, time having corrupted the word slightly into the name of those now called Cimbri.
ζηλοῦσι γὰρ ἐκ παλαιοῦ λῃστεύειν ἐπὶ τὰς ἀλλοτρίας χώρας ἐπερχόμενοι καὶ καταφρονεῖν ἁπάντων.
For they have been eager from of old to plunder, invading foreign lands, and to look down upon everyone.
§5.32.5οὗτοι γάρ εἰσιν οἱ τὴν μὲν Ῥώμην ἑλόντες, τὸ δὲ ἱερὸν τὸ ἐν Δελφοῖς συλήσαντες, καὶ πολλὴν μὲν τῆς Εὐρώπης, οὐκ ὀλίγην δὲ καὶ τῆς Ἀσίας φορολογήσαντες, καὶ τῶν καταπολεμηθέντων τὴν χώραν κατοικήσαντες, οἱ διὰ τὴν πρὸς τοὺς Ἕλληνας ἐπιπλοκὴν Ἑλληνογαλάται κληθέντες, τὸ δὲ τελευταῖον πολλὰ καὶ μεγάλα στρατόπεδα Ῥωμαίων συντρίψαντες.
For these are the ones who captured Rome, plundered the temple at Delphi, and laid tribute upon much of Europe and no small part of Asia, and settled in the land of those they subdued, who because of their mixture with the Greeks were called Helleno-Galatians, and finally shattered many great armies of the Romans.
§5.32.6ἀκολούθως δὲ τῇ κατʼ αὐτοὺς ἀγριότητι καὶ περὶ τὰς θυσίας ἐκτόπως ἀσεβοῦσι· τοὺς γὰρ κακούργους κατὰ πενταετηρίδα φυλάξαντες ἀνασκολοπίζουσι τοῖς θεοῖς καὶ μετʼ ἄλλων πολλῶν ἀπαρχῶν καθαγίζουσι, πυρὰς παμμεγέθεις κατασκευάζοντες.
In accordance with their savagery, they are also extraordinarily impious concerning their sacrifices; for keeping criminals for five years, they impale them in honor of the gods and consecrate them along with many other first-fruits, constructing huge pyres.
χρῶνται δὲ καὶ τοῖς αἰχμαλώτοις ὡς ἱερείοις πρὸς τὰς τῶν θεῶν τιμάς.
They also use captives as victims for the honors of the gods.
τινὲς δʼ αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ κατὰ πόλεμον ληφθέντα ζῷα μετὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀποκτείνουσιν ἢ κατακάουσιν ἤ τισιν ἄλλαις τιμωρίαις ἀφανίζουσι.
And some of them also kill the animals taken in war along with the humans, or burn them, or destroy them by some other punishments.
§5.32.7γυναῖκας δʼ ἔχοντες εὐειδεῖς ἥκιστα ταύταις προσέχουσιν, ἀλλὰ πρὸς τὰς τῶν ἀρρένων ἐπιπλοκὰς ἐκτόπως λυττῶσιν.
Although they have beautiful wives, they pay very little attention to them, but rage extraordinarily after the embraces of males.
εἰώθασι δʼ ἐπὶ δοραῖς θηρίων χαμαὶ καθεύδοντες ἐξ ἀμφοτέρων τῶν μερῶν παρακοίτοις συγκυλίεσθαι.
They are accustomed to sleep on the ground upon skins of wild beasts, rolling about with bedfellows on both sides.
τὸ δὲ πάντων παραδοξότατον, τῆς ἰδίας εὐσχημοσύνης ἀφροντιστοῦντες τὴν τοῦ σώματος ὥραν ἑτέροις εὐκόλως προΐενται, καὶ τοῦτο αἰσχρὸν οὐχ ἡγοῦνται, ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον ὅταν τις αὐτῶν χαριζομένων μὴ προσδέξηται τὴν διδομένην χάριν, ἄτιμον ἡγοῦνται.
And the most strange of all, having no regard for their own decency, they readily yield the bloom of their bodies to others, and they do not consider this shameful, but rather, when one of them who offers a favor does not have the offered gift accepted, they consider it a dishonor.
