§5.11.1μετὰ δὲ τὴν Λιπάραν εἰς τὸ πρὸς δυσμὰς μέρος νῆσός ἐστι πελαγία, μικρὰ μὲν τὸ μέγεθος, ἔρημος δὲ καὶ διά τινα περιπέτειαν Ὀστεώδης ὀνομαζομένη.
After Lipara, in the direction towards the west, there is an island in the open sea, small in size, but deserted and, because of a certain turn of fortune, named Osteodes.
καθʼ ὃν γὰρ καιρὸν Καρχηδόνιοι πρὸς Συρακοσίους διαπολεμοῦντες πολλοὺς καὶ μεγάλους πολέμους δυνάμεις εἶχον ἀξιολόγους πεζάς τε καὶ ναυτικάς, περὶ δὲ τούτους τοὺς καιροὺς μισθοφόρων ὄντων παρʼ αὐτοῖς πολλῶν καὶ παντοδαπῶν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, οὗτοι δὲ ταραχώδεις ὄντες καὶ πολλὰς καὶ μεγάλας στάσεις εἰωθότες ποιεῖσθαι, καὶ μάλιστα ὅταν τοὺς μισθοὺς εὐκαίρως μὴ λαμβάνωσιν, ἐχρήσαντο καὶ τότε τῇ συνήθει ῥᾳδιουργίᾳ τε καὶ τόλμῃ.
For at the time when the Carthaginians were waging many great wars against the Syracusans and possessed notable forces both on land and sea, and around these times, since there were many mercenaries of all kinds of nations in their service, and these men were turbulent and accustomed to make many great mutinies, especially when they did not receive their pay in a timely manner, they on that occasion too resorted to their usual lawlessness and audacity.
ὄντες γὰρ τὸν ἀριθμὸν ὡς ἑξακισχίλιοι, §5.11.2καὶ τοὺς μισθοὺς οὐκ ἀπολαμβάνοντες, τὸ μὲν πρῶτον συντρέχοντες κατεβόων τῶν στρατηγῶν, ἐκείνων δʼ ἀπορουμένων χρημάτων καὶ πολλάκις ἀναβαλλομένων τὰς ἀποδόσεις, ἠπείλουν τοῖς ὅπλοις ἀμυνεῖσθαι τοὺς Καρχηδονίους, καὶ τὰς χεῖρας προσέφερον τοῖς ἡγεμόσι.
For being about six thousand in number, and not receiving their pay, they at first ran together and clamored against the generals; and when the latter were at a loss for money and repeatedly postponed the payments, they threatened to avenge themselves with arms upon the Carthaginians, and laid hands upon their commanders.
§5.11.3τῆς δὲ γερουσίας ἐγκαλούσης καὶ τῆς διαφορᾶς ἀεὶ μᾶλλον ἐκκαομένης, ἡ μὲν γερουσία τοῖς στρατηγοῖς ἐν ἀπορρήτοις προσέταξεν ἀφανίσαι πάντας τοὺς ἐγκαλουμένους·
As the senate denounced them and the dispute was being inflamed more and more, the senate secretly ordered the generals to make away with all the accused.
οἱ δὲ λαβόντες τὰς ἐντολάς, καὶ τοὺς μισθοφόρους ἐμβιβάσαντες εἰς τὰς ναῦς, ἐξέπλευσαν ὡς ἐπί τινα πολεμικὴν χρείαν.
And they, having received these instructions and having embarked the mercenaries upon the ships, sailed out as if for some military need.
προσπλεύσαντες δὲ τῇ προειρημένῃ νήσῳ, καὶ πάντας τοὺς μισθοφόρους ἀποβιβάσαντες εἰς αὐτήν, ἀπέπλευσαν καταλιπόντες ἐν αὐτῇ τοὺς ἐγκαλουμένους.
And having sailed to the aforementioned island and landed all the mercenaries upon it, they sailed away, leaving the accused behind on it.
§5.11.4οἱ δὲ μισθοφόροι περιαλγεῖς ὄντες τῇ περιστάσει καὶ μὴ δυνάμενοι τοὺς Καρχηδονίους ἀμύνασθαι, λιμῷ διεφθάρησαν.
But the mercenaries, being in deep distress at their situation and unable to avenge themselves upon the Carthaginians, perished of hunger.
ἐν νήσῳ δὲ μικρᾷ τοσούτων αἰχμαλώτων τελευτησάντων συνέβη τὸν τόπον ὀλίγον ὄντα πληρωθῆναι τῶν ὀστῶν· ἀφʼ ἧς αἰτίας ἡ νῆσος ἔτυχε τῆς προσηγορίας.
And since so many captives died on a small island, it came about that the place, being small, was filled with their bones; for which reason the island obtained its name.
οἱ μὲν οὖν μισθοφόροι τοῦτον τὸν τρόπον παρανομηθέντες τῆς μεγίστης συμφορᾶς ἔτυχον, ἐνδείᾳ τροφῆς διαφθαρέντες.
In this manner, then, the mercenaries, treated with such lawless injustice, met with the greatest disaster, perishing through the lack of food.
