§4.72.1περὶ μὲν οὖν Ἀσκληπιοῦ καὶ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦτοῖς ῥηθεῖσιν ἀρκεσθησόμεθα, περὶ δὲ τῶν Ἀσωποῦ θυγατέρων καὶ τῶν Αἰακῷ γενομένων υἱῶν νῦν διέξιμεν.
Thus we shall rest content with what has been said about Asclepius and his sons, and we shall now discuss the daughters of Asopus and the sons born to Aeacus.
Ὠκεανοῦ καὶ Τηθύος κατὰ τοὺς μύθους ἐγένοντο παῖδες ἄλλοι τε πλείους ἐπώνυμοι ποταμῶν, ἐν οἷς ὑπάρξαι Πηνειὸν καὶ Ἀσωπόν.
According to the myths, there were born to Oceanus and Tethys many other children who gave their names to rivers, among whom were Peneus and Asopus.
Πηνειὸς μὲν οὖν κατοικήσας περὶ τὴν νῦν οὖσαν Θετταλίαν ἐπώνυμον ἑαυτοῦ τὸν προειρημένον ποταμὸν ἐποίησεν· Ἀσωπὸς δʼ ἐν Φλιοῦντι κατοικήσας ἔγημε Μετώπην τὴν Λάδωνος, ἐξ ἧς ἐγένοντο δύο μὲν υἱοί, Πελασγὸς καὶ Ἰσμηνός, θυγατέρες δὲ δώδεκα, Κόρκυρα καὶ Σαλαμίς, ἔτι δʼ Αἴγινα καὶ Πειρήνη καὶ Κλεώνη, πρὸς δὲ ταύταις Θήβη τε καὶ Τάναγρα καὶ Θέσπεια καὶ Ἀσωπίς, ἔτι δὲ Σινώπη, πρὸς δὲ ταύταις Ὀρνία καὶ Χαλκίς.
Now Peneus, having settled in what is now Thessaly, named the aforesaid river after himself; while Asopus, having settled in Phlius, married Metope the daughter of Ladon, by whom were born two sons, Pelasgus and Ismenus, and twelve daughters, Corcyra and Salamis, and also Aegina, Peirene, and Cleone, and in addition to these Thebe, Tanagra, Thespeia, and Asopis, and also Sinope, and besides these Ornia and Chalcis.
§4.72.2τούτων δʼ Ἰσμηνὸς μὲν εἰς Βοιωτίαν ἐλθὼν κατῴκησε περὶ τὸν ποταμὸν τὸν ἀπʼ ἐκείνου τὴν ὁμωνυμίαν λαβόντα, τῶν δὲ θυγατέρων Σινώπη μὲν ὑπὸ Ἀπόλλωνος ἁρπαγεῖσα ἀπηνέχθη πρὸς τοῦτον τὸν τόπον οὗ νῦν ἐστιν ἡ ἀπʼ ἐκείνης ὀνομασθεῖσα πόλις Σινώπη· ἐκ δὲ ταύτης καὶ Ἀπόλλωνος γενόμενος υἱὸς Σύρος ἐβασίλευσε τῶν ἀπʼ ἐκείνου Σύρων ὀνομασθέντων.
Of these, Ismenus went to Boeotia and settled near the river which received its namesake from him, while of the daughters, Sinope was carried off by Apollo and borne away to that place where now stands the city of Sinope, which was named after her; and the son born to her and Apollo, Syrus, became king of those who were named Syrians after him.
§4.72.3Κόρκυρα δʼ ὑπὸ Ποσειδῶνος ἀπηνέχθη εἰς νῆσον τὴν ἀπʼ ἐκείνης Κόρκυραν ὀνομαζομένην· ἐκ ταύτης δὲ καὶ Ποσειδῶνος ἐγένετο Φαίαξ, ἀφʼ οὗ τοὺς Φαίακας συνέβη τυχεῖν ταύτης τῆς προσηγορίας.
And Corcyra was carried off by Poseidon to the island which was named Corcyra after her; and from her and Poseidon was born Phaeax, from whom it came about that the Phaeacians received this appellation.
§4.72.4Φαίακος δʼ ἐγένετο Ἀλκίνοος ὁ τὸν Ὀδυσσέα καταγαγὼν εἰς τὴν Ἰθάκην.
And of Phaeax was born Alcinous, who restored Odysseus to Ithaca.
Σαλαμὶς δʼ ὑπὸ Ποσειδῶνος ἁρπαγεῖσα ἐκομίσθη εἰς τὴν ἀπʼ αὐτῆς νῆσον Σαλαμῖνα προσαγορευθεῖσαν· αὕτη δὲ μιγεῖσα Ποσειδῶνι Κυχρέα ἐγέννησεν, ὃς βασιλεύσας τῆς νήσου ταύτης καὶ γενόμενος ἐπιφανὴς ἀπέκτεινεν ὄφιν ὑπερφυῆ τὸ μέγεθος καὶ λυμαινόμενον τοὺς ἐγχωρίους.
And Salamis was carried off by Poseidon and brought to the island which was called Salamis after her; and she, having united with Poseidon, gave birth to Cychreus, who, becoming king of this island and achieving renown, killed a serpent of monstrous size which was ravaging the inhabitants.
§4.72.5Αἴγινα δʼ ἐκ Φλιοῦντος ὑπὸ Διὸς ἁρπαγεῖσα εἰς νῆσον ἀπεκομίσθη τὴν ἀπʼ ἐκείνης Αἴγιναν ὀνομασθεῖσαν, ἐν ταύτῃ δὲ Διὶ μιγεῖσα ἐτέκνωσεν Αἰακόν, ὃς ἐβασίλευσε τῆς νήσου.
And Aegina, being carried off from Phlius by Zeus, was brought to the island which was named Aegina after her, and there, having united with Zeus, she gave birth to Aeacus, who became king of the island.
§4.72.6τούτου δʼ ἐγένοντο υἱοὶ Πηλεὺς καὶ Τελαμών.
To him were born sons, Peleus and Telamon.
τούτων δὲ Πηλεὺς δίσκῳ βαλὼν ἀπέκτεινεν ἀκουσίως Φῶκον ὁμοπάτριον ἀδελφόν, ἐξ ἄλλης δὲ μητρὸς γεγενημένον.
Of these, Peleus, throwing a discus, accidentally killed Phocus, his brother by the same father but born of another mother.
διὰ δὲ τὸν φόνον Πηλεὺς ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρὸς φυγαδευθεὶς ἔφυγε τῆς νῦν Θετταλίας καλουμένης εἰς Φθίαν, καὶ καθαρθεὶς ὑπὸ Ἄκτορος τοῦ βασιλέως διεδέξατο τὴν βασιλείαν, ἄπαιδος ὄντος τοῦ Ἄκτορος.
Because of this slaying, Peleus, exiled by his father, fled to Phthia in what is now called Thessaly, and having been purified by King Actor, succeeded to the kingship, since Actor was childless.
ἐκ δὲ Πηλέως καὶ Θέτιδος γενόμενος Ἀχιλλεὺς ἐστράτευσε μετʼ Ἀγαμέμνονος εἰς Τροίαν.
And Achilles, born of Peleus and Thetis, campaigned with Agamemnon against Troy.
§4.72.7Τελαμὼν δὲ φυγὼν ἐξ Αἰγίνης κατήντησεν εἰς Σαλαμῖνα, καὶ γήμας Κυχρέως τοῦ βασιλέως τῶν Σαλαμινίων θυγατέρα Γλαύκην ἐβασίλευσε τῆς νήσου.
And Telamon, fleeing from Aegina, arrived at Salamis, and marrying Glauce, the daughter of Cychreus the king of the Salaminians, became king of the island.
τῆς δὲ γυναικὸς Γλαύκης ἀποθανούσης ἔγημεν ἐξ Ἀθηνῶν Ἐρίβοιαν τὴν Ἀλκάθου, ἐξ ἧς ἐγέννησεν Αἴαντα τὸν ἐπὶ Τροίαν στρατεύσαντα.
When his wife Glauce died, he married Eriboea of Athens, the daughter of Alcatheus, by whom he begot Ajax, who campaigned against Troy.
