Medea herself, having fashioned a hollow statue of Artemis, hid within it all kinds of natural drugs, and having anointed her own hair with certain powerful preparations, made it grey, and her face and body full of wrinkles, so that those who saw her thought she was an altogether old woman; and finally, taking up the goddess, who had been arrayed in a terrifying manner to excite the superstition of the crowds, she entered the city at daybreak. While she acted as if possessed by a god, and the multitude ran together along the streets, she commanded everyone to receive the goddess reverently; for she said that the goddess was present from the Hyperboreans for the good fortune of both the whole city and the king. When all were worshiping and honoring the goddess with sacrifices, and the entire city as a whole was sharing in the religious ecstasy, Medea entered the palace, and threw Pelias into a superstitious state of mind, and led his daughters by means of her wondrous marvels into such amazement that they believed that the goddess was present to make the house of the king prosperous; for she declared that Artemis, riding on dragons, had flown through the air over many parts of the inhabited world, and had chosen the most pious of all kings for her own establishment and eternal honors; and that the goddess had commanded her to take away Pelias' old age by means of certain powers and make his body completely young, and to bestow many other things for a happy and god-favored life. When the king was amazed at the extraordinary nature of her words, Medea promised to offer proof of these things immediately upon her own body.
εἰποῦσαν γὰρ μιᾷ τῶν Πελίου θυγατέρων καθαρὸν ἐνεγκεῖν ὕδωρ, καὶ τῆς παρθένου τὸ ῥηθὲν εὐθὺς ἐπὶ τέλος ἀγαγούσης, φασὶν εἰς οἰκίσκον τινὰ συγκλείσασαν ἑαυτὴν καὶ περινιψαμένην τὸ σῶμα πᾶν ἀποκλύσασθαι τὰς τῶν φαρμάκων δυνάμεις· ἀποκατασταθεῖσαν δʼ εἰς τὴν προϋπάρχουσαν διάθεσιν καὶ φανεῖσαν τῷ βασιλεῖ καταπλήξασθαι τοὺς ὁρῶντας, καὶ δόξαι τινὶ θεῶν προνοίᾳ μετηλλαχέναι τὸ γῆρας εἰς παρθένου νεότητα καὶ κάλλος περίβλεπτον. §4.51.6ποιῆσαι δʼ αὐτὴν καὶ διά τινων φαρμάκων εἴδωλα φαντασθῆναι τῶν δρακόντων, ἐφʼ ὧν ἀποφαίνεσθαι τὴν θεὸν κομισθεῖσαν διʼ ἀέρος ἐξ Ὑπερβορέων ἐπιξενωθῆναι τῷ Πελίᾳ.
For after telling one of Pelias' daughters to bring clean water, and when the maiden had immediately executed what was said, they say that, having shut herself up in a small room and washed her whole body thoroughly, she washed away the powers of the drugs; and being restored to her pre-existing condition and appearing before the king, she astounded the onlookers, and seemed by some providence of the gods to have changed her old age into a maiden's youth and striking beauty. She also, by means of certain drugs, caused phantoms of dragons to appear, upon which she declared the goddess had been carried through the air from the Hyperboreans to be received as a guest by Pelias.
τῶν δʼ ἐνεργημάτων ὑπὲρ τὴν ἀνθρωπίνην φύσιν φανέντων, καὶ τοῦ βασιλέως μεγάλης ἀποδοχῆς ἀξιοῦντος τὴν Μήδειαν καὶ τὸ σύνολον πιστεύσαντος ἀληθῆ λέγειν, φασὶν αὐτὴν κατὰ μόνας ἐντυχοῦσαν τῷ Πελίᾳ παρακαλέσαι ταῖς θυγατράσι διακελεύσασθαι συνεργεῖν καὶ πράττειν ἅπερ ἂν αὐταῖς προστάττῃ· προσήκειν γὰρ τῷ τοῦ βασιλέως σώματι μὴ δουλικαῖς χερσίν, ἀλλὰ ταῖς τῶν τέκνων θεραπευθέντα τυχεῖν τῆς παρὰ θεῶν εὐεργεσίας. §4.51.7διόπερ τοῦ Πελίου ταῖς θυγατράσι διαρρήδην εἰπόντος πάντα πράττειν ὅσα ἂν ἡ Μήδεια προστάττῃ περὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ πατρός, τὰς μὲν παρθένους ἑτοίμους οὔσας τὸ κελευόμενον ἐπιτελεῖν,
When these deeds appeared to transcend human nature, and the king, holding Medea in great favor, believed entirely that she spoke the truth, they say that she, meeting with Pelias in private, urged him to command his daughters to cooperate and do whatever she might order them; for she said it was fitting that the king's body, being ministered to not by slavish hands, but by those of his children, should receive the beneficence from the gods. Therefore, when Pelias expressly told his daughters to do everything that Medea might command concerning their father's body, while the maidens were ready to execute what was commanded,
