Having made his expedition to India over a period of three years, he made his return to Boeotia, bringing a noteworthy quantity of booty, and was the first of all men to lead a triumph riding upon an Indian elephant.
And the Boeotians and the other Greeks and Thracians, commemorating the expedition to India, established three-yearly sacrifices to Dionysus, and believed that the god made his manifestations among men at this time.
For this reason, in many Greek cities, Dionysiac festivals of women assemble every three years, and it is customary for the maidens to carry the thyrsus and join in the frenzy, shouting cries of joy and honoring the god; and the married women, gathering in groups, offer sacrifices to the god, celebrate the Bacchic rites, and in general hymn the presence of Dionysus, imitating the maenads who are recorded in ancient times to have attended the god.
And he punished many others throughout the inhabited world who were thought to be impious, the most illustrious among them being Pentheus and Lycurgus.
And since the discovery and gift of wine was exceedingly pleasing to men because of the pleasure derived from the drink and because those who drink wine become more vigorous in their bodies, they say that at dinner, when unmixed wine is served, they call additionally upon the Good Deity, but when, after dinner, it is served mixed with water, they call upon Zeus the Saviour.
For they say that unmixed wine, when drunk, produces states of madness, but when mixed with the rain from Zeus, the delight and pleasure remain, while the harm of madness and paralysis is corrected.
In general, they mythologize that among the gods, Dionysus and Demeter receive the greatest acceptance among men, because they surpassed others in their benefactions through the discovery of good things; the former having become the discoverer of the most pleasing drink, and the latter having delivered to the race of men the best of dry food.
