§4.22.1ὁ δʼ Ἡρακλῆς ἐκ τοῦ Φλεγραίου πεδίου κατελθὼν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλατταν κατεσκεύασεν ἔργα περὶ τὴν Ἄορνον ὀνομαζομένην λίμνην, ἱερὰν δὲ Φερσεφόνης νομιζομένην.
Heracles, having come down from the Phlegraean plain to the sea, constructed works around the lake named Aornus, which is considered sacred to Persephone.
κεῖται μὲν οὖν ἡ λίμνη μεταξὺ Μισηνοῦ καὶ Δικαιαρχείων, πλησίον τῶν θερμῶν ὑδάτων, ἔχει δὲ τὴν μὲν περίμετρον ὡς πέντε σταδίων, τὸ δὲ βάθος ἄπιστον· ἔχουσα γὰρ ὕδωρ καθαρώτατον φαίνεται τῇ χρόᾳ κυανοῦν διὰ τὴν ὑπερβολὴν τοῦ βάθους.
Now the lake lies between Misenum and Dicaearchia, near the hot springs, and it has a circumference of about five stadia, and an unbelievable depth; for, having very clear water, it appears dark blue in color due to the excess of its depth.
§4.22.2μυθολογοῦσι δὲ τὸ μὲν παλαιὸν γεγενῆσθαι νεκυομαντεῖον πρὸς αὐτῇ, ὃ τοῖς ὕστερον χρόνοις καταλελύσθαι φασίν.
And they relate that in ancient times there was an oracle of the dead near it, which they say was abolished in later times.
ἀναπεπταμένης δὲ τῆς λίμνης εἰς τὴν θάλατταν, τὸν Ἡρακλέα λέγεται τὸν μὲν ἔκρουν ἐγχῶσαι, τὴν δʼ ὁδὸν τὴν νῦν οὖσαν παρὰ θάλατταν κατασκευάσαι, τὴν ἀπʼ ἐκείνου καλουμένην Ἡρακλείαν.
And since the lake was open to the sea, it is said that Heracles blocked up its outlet and constructed the road which now runs along the sea, which is called Heracleia after him.
§4.22.3ταῦτα μὲν οὖν ἔπραξε περὶ ἐκείνους τοὺς τόπους.
These things, then, he did in those places.
ἐντεῦθεν δʼ ἀναζεύξας κατήντησε τῆς Ποσειδωνιατῶν χώρας πρός τινα πέτραν, πρὸς ᾗ μυθολογοῦσιν ἴδιόν τι γενέσθαι καὶ παράδοξον.
And breaking camp from there, he arrived in the territory of Poseidonia at a certain rock, near which they relate that a certain peculiar and incredible event occurred.
τῶν γὰρ ἐγχωρίων τινὰ κυνηγὸν ἐν τοῖς κατὰ τὴν θήραν ἀνδραγαθήμασι διωνομασμένον ἐν μὲν τοῖς ἔμπροσθεν χρόνοις εἰωθέναι τῶν ληφθέντων θηρίων τὰς κεφαλὰς καὶ τοὺς πόδας ἀνατιθέναι τῇ Ἀρτέμιδι καὶ προσηλοῦν τοῖς δένδρεσι, τότε δʼ οὖν ὑπερφυῆ κάπρον χειρωσάμενον καὶ τῆς θεοῦ καταφρονήσαντα εἰπεῖν ὅτι τὴν κεφαλὴν τοῦ θηρίου ἑαυτῷ ἀνατίθησι, καὶ τοῖς λόγοις ἀκολούθως ἔκ τινος δένδρου κρεμάσαι ταύτην, αὐτὸν δέ, καυματώδους περιστάσεως οὔσης, κατὰ μεσημβρίαν εἰς ὕπνον τραπῆναι· καθʼ ὃν δὴ χρόνον τοῦ δεσμοῦ λυθέντος αὐτομάτως πεσεῖν τὴν κεφαλὴν ἐπὶ τὸν κοιμώμενον καὶ διαφθεῖραι.
For they say that a certain hunter among the inhabitants, renowned for his brave deeds in the hunt, in former times had been accustomed to dedicate the heads and feet of captured beasts to Artemis and nail them to trees, but at that time, having subdued an extraordinary wild boar and having despised the goddess, he said that he dedicated the head of the beast to himself, and in accordance with his words hung it from a certain tree, and he himself, since there was a scorching heat, fell asleep at midday; at which very time, the bond having been loosened of itself, the head fell upon him as he slept and destroyed him.
§4.22.4ἀλλὰ γὰρ οὐκ ἄν τις θαυμάσειε τὸ γεγονός, ὅτι τῆς θεᾶς ταύτης πολλαὶ περιστάσεις μνημονεύονται περιέχουσαι τὴν κατὰ τῶν ἀσεβῶν τιμωρίαν.
But indeed, one would not wonder at what happened, because many events concerning this goddess are remembered which contain punishment against the impious.
τῷ δʼ Ἡρακλεῖ διὰ τὴν εὐσέβειαν τοὐναντίον συνέβη γενέσθαι.
But to Heracles, because of his piety, the opposite happened to occur.
§4.22.5καταντήσαντος γὰρ αὐτοῦ πρὸς τὰ μεθόρια τῆς Ῥηγίνης καὶ Λοκρίδος, καὶ διὰ τὸν ἐκ τῆς ὁδοιπορίας κόπον ἀναπαυομένου, φασὶν ὑπὸ τῶν τεττίγων αὐτὸν ἐνοχλούμενον εὔξασθαι τοῖς θεοῖς ἀφανεῖς γενέσθαι τοὺς ἐνοχλοῦντας αὐτόν· καὶ διὰ τοῦτο, τῶν θεῶν βεβαιωσάντων τὴν εὐχήν, μὴ μόνον κατὰ τὸ παρὸν ἀφανεῖς γενέσθαι τούτους, ἀλλὰ καὶ κατὰ τὸν ὕστερον χρόνον ἅπαντα μηδένα τέττιγα φαίνεσθαι κατὰ τὴν χώραν.
For when he had arrived at the borders of Rhegium and Locris, and was resting due to the fatigue from his journey, they say that, being disturbed by the cicadas, he prayed to the gods that those disturbing him should disappear; and for this reason, the gods having confirmed his prayer, not only did these disappear for the present, but also during all subsequent time no cicada has appeared in that land.
§4.22.6ὁ δʼ Ἡρακλῆς καταντήσας ἐπὶ τὸν πορθμὸν κατὰ τὸ στενώτατον τῆς θαλάττης τὰς μὲν βοῦς ἐπεραίωσεν εἰς τὴν Σικελίαν, αὐτὸς δὲ ταύρου κέρως λαβόμενος διενήξατο τὸν πόρον, ὄντος τοῦ διαστήματος σταδίων τριῶν καὶ δέκα, ὡς Τίμαιός φησι.
And Heracles, having arrived at the strait at the narrowest part of the sea, transported the cows over to Sicily, and he himself, taking hold of a bull's horn, swam across the passage, the distance being thirteen stadia, as Timaeus says.
