§3.45.1παραπλεύσαντι δὲ τοὺς τόπους τούτους ὄρη πέντε διεστηκότα ἀλλήλων εἰς ὕψος ἀνατείνει, συναγομένας ἔχοντα τὰς κορυφὰς εἰς πετρώδη μαστόν, παραπλήσιον φαντασίαν ἀποτελοῦντα ταῖς κατʼ Αἴγυπτον πυραμίσιν.
To one sailing past these places, five mountains separated from one another stretch up to a height, having their summits gathered together into a rocky breast-shaped mound, presenting an appearance very similar to the pyramids in Egypt.
§3.45.2ἑξῆς δʼ ἐστὶ κόλπος κυκλοτερὴς μεγάλοις ἀκρωτηρίοις περιεχόμενος, οὗ κατὰ μέσην τὴν διάμετρον ἀνέστηκε λόφος τραπεζοειδής, ἐφʼ οὗ τρεῖς ναοὶ θαυμαστοὶ τοῖς ὕψεσιν ᾠκοδόμηνται θεῶν, ἀγνοουμένων μὲν ὑπὸ τῶν Ἑλλήνων, τιμωμένων δʼ ὑπὸ τῶν ἐγχωρίων διαφερόντως.
Successive to this is a circular gulf enclosed by great promontories, at the middle of whose diameter there rises a trapezoidal hill, upon which three temples, wonderful in their heights, have been built for gods who are unknown to the Greeks but honored exceedingly by the inhabitants.
§3.45.3μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα αἰγιαλὸς παρήκει κάθυγρος, ναματιαίοις καὶ γλυκέσι ῥείθροις διειλημμένος· καθʼ ὅν ἐστιν ὄρος ὀνομαζόμενον μὲν Χαβῖνον, δρυμοῖς δὲ παντοδαποῖς πεπυκνωμένον.
After these things, a damp coast extends, intersected by spring-fed and sweet streams; along which is a mountain called Chabinos, thick with all kinds of woods.
τὴν δὲ χέρσον τὴν ἐχομένην τῆς ὀρεινῆς νέμονται τῶν Ἀράβων οἱ καλούμενοι Δέβαι.
The mainland adjacent to the mountainous region is occupied by those of the Arabs called Debai.
§3.45.4οὗτοι δὲ καμηλοτροφοῦντες πρὸς ἅπαντα χρῶνται τὰ μέγιστα τῶν κατὰ τὸν βίον τῇ τοῦ ζῴου τούτου χρείᾳ· πρὸς μὲν γὰρ τοὺς πολεμίους ἀπὸ τούτων μάχονται, τὰς δὲ κομιδὰς τῶν φορτίων ἐπὶ τούτων νωτοφοροῦντες ῥᾳδίως ἅπαντα συντελοῦσι, τὸ δὲ γάλα πίνοντες ἀπὸ τούτων διατρέφονται, καὶ τὴν ὅλην χώραν περιπολοῦσιν ἐπὶ τῶν δρομάδων καμήλων.
These, breeding camels, make use of the service of this animal for all the greatest affairs of life; for against their enemies they fight from these, and carrying the transports of their burdens on the backs of these they easily accomplish everything, and drinking their milk they are nourished by these, and they patrol the whole country upon swift camels.
§3.45.5κατὰ δὲ μέσην τὴν χώραν αὐτῶν φέρεται ποταμὸς τοσοῦτο χρυσοῦ καταφέρων ψῆγμα φαινόμενον ὥστε κατὰ τὰς ἐκβολὰς τὴν ἰλὺν ἀποφέρεσθαι περιστίλβουσαν.
Through the middle of their country flows a river carrying down so much visible gold dust that at the mouths the mud is carried away sparkling all over.
οἱ δʼ ἐγχώριοι τῆς μὲν ἐργασίας τῆς τοῦ χρυσοῦ παντελῶς εἰσιν ἄπειροι, φιλόξενοι δʼ ὑπάρχουσιν, οὐ πρὸς πάντας τοὺς ἀφικνουμένους, ἀλλὰ πρὸς μόνους τοὺς ἀπὸ Βοιωτίας καὶ Πελοποννήσου διά τινα παλαιὰν ἀφʼ Ἡρακλέους οἰκειότητα πρὸς §3.45.6τὸ ἔθνος, ἣν μυθικῶς ἑαυτοὺς παρειληφέναι παρὰ τῶν προγόνων ἱστοροῦσιν.
The inhabitants are completely inexperienced in the working of gold, but they are hospitable, not toward all who arrive, but only toward those from Boeotia and Peloponnese, because of some ancient kinship, derived from Heracles, toward the tribe, which they report that they themselves have received mythologically from their ancestors.
ἡ δʼ ἑξῆς χώρα κατοικεῖται μὲν ὑπὸ Ἀράβων Ἀλιλαίων καὶ Γασανδῶν, οὐκ ἔμπυρος οὖσα καθάπερ αἱ πλησίον, ἀλλὰ μαλακαῖς καὶ δασείαις νεφέλαις πολλάκις κατεχομένη· ἐκ δὲ τούτων ὑετοὶ γίνονται καὶ χειμῶνες εὔκαιροι καὶ ποιοῦντες τὴν θερινὴν ὥραν εὔκρατον.
The successive country is inhabited by the Alilaioi and Gasandoi Arabs, not being burnt up as are those nearby, but often held by soft and thick clouds; and from these there come timely rains and winter storms, making the summer season temperate.
ἥ τε χώρα πάμφορός ἐστι καὶ διάφορος κατὰ τὴν ἀρετήν, οὐ μέντοι τυγχάνει τῆς ἐνδεχομένης ἐπιμελείας διὰ τὴν τῶν λαῶν ἀπειρίαν.
The country is all-producing and excellent in its fertility, but it does not obtain the care it admits of because of the inexperience of the peoples.
§3.45.7τὸν δὲ χρυσὸν εὑρίσκοντες ἐν τοῖς φυσικοῖς ὑπονόμοις τῆς γῆς συνάγουσι πολύν, οὐ τὸν ἐκ τοῦ ψήγματος συντηκόμενον, ἀλλὰ τὸν αὐτοφυῆ καὶ καλούμενον ἀπὸ τοῦ συμβεβηκότος ἄπυρον.
Finding gold in the natural underground channels of the earth, they gather much of it, not that which is melted down from gold dust, but the self-grown gold which is called from its circumstance "unfired".
κατὰ δὲ τὸ μέγεθος ἐλάχιστος μὲν εὑρίσκεται παραπλήσιος πυρῆνι, μέγιστος δὲ οὐ πολὺ λειπόμενος βασιλικοῦ καρύου.
In size, the smallest is found similar to a fruit-stone, and the largest not much falling short of a royal nut.
§3.45.8φοροῦσι δʼ αὐτὸν περί τε τοὺς καρποὺς τῶν χειρῶν καὶ περὶ τοὺς τραχήλους, τετρημένον ἐναλλὰξ λίθοις διαφανέσι.
And they wear it around their wrists and around their necks, bored and alternated with transparent stones.
καὶ τούτου μὲν τοῦ γένους ἐπιπολάζοντος παρʼ αὐτοῖς, χαλκοῦ δὲ καὶ σιδήρου σπανίζοντος, ἐπʼ ἴσης ἀλλάττονται ταῦτα τὰ φορτία πρὸς τοὺς ἐμπόρους.
And since this kind of metal is abundant among them, while copper and iron are scarce, they exchange these cargoes on equal terms with the merchants.
