The adjacent coastal region was in ancient times inhabited by the Maranitae, but after this by the Garindaneis, who were their neighbors.
They took possession of the land in some such manner as this: when a quinquennial festival was being celebrated in the previously mentioned Phoenicon, the neighboring inhabitants came from all sides, intending to sacrifice hecatombs of well-fed camels to the gods in the sacred precinct, and likewise intending to carry back to their homelands some of the waters from it, because it was handed down that this drink provided health to those who partook of it.
For these reasons indeed, when the Maranitae had gone down to the festival, the Garindaneis, having slaughtered those who had been left behind in the country, and having ambushed those returning from the festival, destroyed them; and having emptied the country of its inhabitants, they divided among themselves by lot fertile plains and pastures producing abundant feed for their cattle.
This coast has few harbors, but is divided by frequent and high mountains, from which, possessing every variety of colors, it offers a wonderful sight to those sailing past.
To one sailing past this country, there succeeds the Laeanites Gulf, which is inhabited round about by many villages of the Arabs who are called Nabataeans.
These occupy much of the coast, and not a little of the country extending into the interior, possessing an unspeakable multitude of people and herds of beasts incredible in their numbers.
In ancient times they lived practicing justice and being content with the food from their beasts, but later, when the kings from Alexandria had made the passage navigable for merchants, they both attacked shipwrecked people and, constructing pirate vessels, plundered those who sailed, imitating the savage and lawless ways of the Tauri in the Pontus; but later, being caught on the open sea by quadriremes, they were fittingly punished.
After these places there is a well-watered plain country, which, because of the springs flowing everywhere, produces dog's-tooth grass and lucerne, and also lotus as tall as a man.
And because of the abundance and the excellence of the pasture, it supports not only an unspeakable multitude of all kinds of cattle, but also wild camels, and furthermore deer and gazelles.
And attracted by the multitude of the animals reared there, herds of lions and wolves and leopards come from the desert, against which those who breed beasts are compelled both by day and by night to fight wild beasts on behalf of their flocks; thus the good fortune of the country becomes a cause of misfortune to its inhabitants, because nature as a rule gives to humans hurtful things along with the good.
