The inhabitants near the desert and wild beast-infested country say that all kinds of snakes, incredible in their sizes, are seen.
For some who declare that they have seen one a hundred cubits in length would justly be suspected of telling falsehoods, not only by us but also by everyone else; for they add even more paradoxical things to what is already disbelieved, saying that, since the country is flat, whenever the largest of the beasts coil themselves up, they create with their coils wrapped upon one another heights that appear from afar like a hill.
Now, one would not easily agree with the size of the aforementioned beasts; but concerning the largest beasts that have come under observation and have been brought in suitable containers to Alexandria, we shall make our record, adding also the detailed arrangement of their capture.
For Ptolemy the Second, being eager about the hunting of elephants and assigning great rewards to those who performed the marvelous captures of the strongest animals, and having spent much money on this desire, procured many war elephants and made the unseen and marvelous natures of other animals known to the Greeks.
Therefore, some of the hunters, seeing the king's generosity in rewards, gathered in a sufficient number and decided to risk their lives, and having captured one of the great snakes, to bring it alive to Alexandria to Ptolemy.
Although the undertaking was great and marvelous, fortune cooperated with their plans and brought about a fitting end to the action.
For having observed one of the snakes, thirty cubits long, which frequented the pools of water, and which at other times kept its body in a motionless coil, but when the animals driven by thirst appeared at the place suddenly rose up, and snatched them with its mouth, and constricted the body of the appearing animals with its coil, so that it was impossible in any way for what fell in its path to escape — since, then, the animal was extremely long and sluggish in its nature, they hoped to master it with nooses and ropes, and at first they approached it full of confidence, having equipped everything necessary for the task; but as they drew near, they were more and more struck with fear, seeing its fiery eye and its tongue licking in every direction, and furthermore, by the roughness of its scales as it moved and rubbed through the woods, producing an extraordinary noise, and the monstrous size of its teeth, and the wild appearance of its mouth, and the incredible height of its coil.
Therefore, having lost the color of their faces through fear, they timidly threw the nooses from the tail; but the beast, as soon as the rope touched its body, turned around with a loud and terrifying hiss, and raising itself above its head, snatched the first man in its mouth and devoured his flesh while he was still alive, and the second, as he was fleeing, it dragged from afar with its coil, and wrapping around him, squeezed his belly with its bond; and all the remaining men, being astounded, secured their safety through flight.
