§3.19.1οἰκήσεσι δὲ τὰ ἔθνη οὐχ ὁμοίαις χρῆται, πρὸς δὲ τὰς τῆς περιστάσεως ἰδιότητας διηλλαγμέναις ἐμβιοῦσι.
But these tribes do not use uniform dwellings, but live in ones adapted to the peculiarities of their environment.
τινὲς μὲν γὰρ ἐν σπηλαίοις κατοικοῦσι κεκλιμένοις μάλιστα πρὸς τὰς ἄρκτους, ἐν οἷς καταψύχουσιν ἑαυτοὺς διά τε τὸ βάθος τῆς σκιᾶς καὶ διὰ τὰς περιπνεούσας αὔρας· τὰ μὲν γὰρ πρὸς μεσημβρίαν νεύοντα, τοῖς ἴπνοις παραπλησίαν ἔχοντα τὴν θερμασίαν, ἀπρόσιτα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ἐστὶ δια τὴν τοῦ καύματος ὑπερβολήν.
For some dwell in caves inclined chiefly toward the north, in which they cool themselves owing both to the depth of the shade and to the breezes blowing around; for those caves that face south, having heat comparable to that of ovens, are inaccessible to men because of the excessive intensity of the heat.
§3.19.2οἱ δὲ τῶν πρὸς ἄρκτον νευόντων σπηλαίων σπανίζοντες ἀθροίζουσι τὰς πλευρὰς τῶν ἐκ τοῦ πελάγους ἐκπιπτόντων κητῶν·
On the other hand, those who lack caves facing north collect the ribs of the whales that are cast up from the deep.
τῆς δὲ τούτων δαψιλείας πολλῆς οὔσης, καταπλέξαντες ἐξ ἑκατέρου μέρους κύρτας πρὸς ἀλλήλας νενευκυίας, τῷ προσφάτῳ φύκει ταύτας διαπλέκουσι.
Since there is a great abundance of these, they interlace arches leaning toward one another from each side, and weave them together with fresh seaweed.
σκεπαζομένης οὖν τῆς καμάρας, ἐν ταύτῃ τὸ βαρύτατον τοῦ καύματος ἀναπαύονται, τῆς κατὰ φύσιν χρείας αὐτοδίδακτον τέχνην ὑφηγουμένης.
When the vaulted roof is thus covered, they rest in this under the heaviest heat, their natural need pointing the way to a self-taught art.
§3.19.3τρίτος δὲ τρόπος ἐστὶ τοῖς Ἰχθυοφάγοις τῆς σκηνώσεως τοιοῦτος.
The third style of dwelling of the Ichthyophagi is as follows.
ἐλαῖαι φύονται πάνυ πολλαὶ περὶ τοὺς τόπους τούτους, τὰ μὲν περὶ τὴν ῥίζαν ἔχουσαι προσκλυζόμενα τῇ θαλάττῃ, πυκναὶ δὲ τοῖς φυλλώμασι, τὸν δὲ καρπὸν ὅμοιον ἔχουσαι τῷ κασταναϊκῷ καρύῳ.
There grow in these parts very many olive trees, which have their roots washed by the sea, are thick in foliage, and bear a fruit resembling the chestnut.
§3.19.4ταύτας ἀλλήλαις συμπλέκοντες καὶ συνεχῆ σκιὰν ποιοῦντες ἰδιαζούσαις σκηναῖς ἐμβιοῦσιν·
By intertwining these with one another and making a continuous shade, they live in unique tents.
ἅμα γὰρ ἐν γῇ καὶ θαλάττῃ διατρίβοντες ἐπιτερπῶς διεξάγουσι, τὸν μὲν ἥλιον φεύγοντες τῇ διὰ τῶν ἀκρεμόνων σκιᾷ, τὸ δὲ φυσικὸν περὶ τοὺς τόπους καῦμα τῇ συνεχεῖ τοῦ κύματος προσκλύσει διορθούμενοι, ταῖς δὲ περιπνοαῖς τῶν εὐκαίρων ἀνέμων εἰς ῥᾳστώνην ἄγοντες τὰ σώματα.
For spending their time at once on land and in the sea, they pass their lives very pleasantly, escaping the sun by the shade of the branches, tempering the natural heat of the region by the constant washing of the waves, and bringing their bodies to ease by the blowing of favorable winds.
ῥητέον δʼ ἡμῖν καὶ περὶ τοῦ τετάρτου μέρους τῆς σκηνώσεως.
We must also speak of the fourth kind of dwelling.
§3.19.5ἐκ γὰρ τοῦ παντὸς αἰῶνος σεσώρευται τοῦ μνίου φόρτος ἄπλατος, ὄρει παρεμφερής· οὗτος ὑπὸ τῆς συνεχοῦς τοῦ κύματος πληγῆς πεπιλημένος τὴν φύσιν ἔχει στερέμνιον καὶ συμπεπλεγμένην ἅμμῳ.
For from all time, an immense mass of seaweed has accumulated, resembling a mountain; this, having been compacted by the constant beating of the waves, has a firm nature and is intermingled with sand.
ἐν τούτοις οὖν τοῖς ἀναστήμασιν ὑπονόμους ἀνδρομήκεις ὀρύττοντες, τὸν μὲν κατὰ κορυφὴν τόπον ἐῶσι στέγην, κάτωθεν δʼ αὐλῶνας παραμήκεις καὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους συντετρημένους κατασκευάζουσιν.
In these mounds, therefore, they dig man-high tunnels, leaving the upper part as a roof, and constructing long passages below that open into one another.
ἐν δὲ τούτοις ἀναψύχοντες ἑαυτοὺς ἀλύπους κατασκευάζουσι, καὶ κατὰ τὰς ἐπικλύσεις τῶν κυμάτων ἐκπηδῶντες περὶ τὴν θήραν τῶν ἰχθύων ἀσχολοῦνται· ὅταν δὲ ἄμπωτις γένηται, κατευωχησόμενοι τὰ ληφθέντα συμφεύγουσι πάλιν εἰς τοὺς προειρημένους αὐλῶνας.
In these they cool themselves and render themselves free from trouble, and at the flooding of the waves they leap out and busy themselves with the catching of fish; but when the ebb tide comes, they flee together again into the aforementioned passages to feast upon their catch.
§3.19.6τοὺς δὲ τελευτήσαντας θάπτουσι κατὰ μὲν τὸν τῆς ἀμπώτεως καιρὸν ἐῶντες ἐρριμμένους, ὅταν δʼ ἡ πλημυρὶς ἐπέλθῃ, ῥίπτουσιν εἰς τὴν θάλατταν τὰ σώματα.
As for those who die, they bury them by leaving them cast aside at the time of the ebb tide, but when the flood tide comes, they throw the bodies into the sea.
διὸ καὶ τὴν ἰδίαν ταφὴν τροφὴν τῶν ἰχθύων ποιούμενοι κυκλούμενον ἰδιοτρόπως τὸν βίον ἔχουσι παρʼ ὅλον τὸν αἰῶνα.
Therefore, by making their own burial the food of the fish, they have a life that is singularly circular throughout all time.
