§2.59.1πάντες δʼ οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν αὐταῖς, καίπερ δαψιλεῖς ἔχοντες πάντων χορηγίας αὐτοφυεῖς, ὅμως οὐκ ἀνέδην χρῶνται ταῖς ἀπολαύσεσιν, ἀλλὰ τὴν λιτότητα διώκουσι καὶ τὴν ἀρκοῦσαν τροφὴν προσφέρονται·
And all the inhabitants in them, although they have spontaneous and abundant supplies of everything, nevertheless do not indulge in enjoyments without restraint, but pursue simplicity and take only sufficient food.
κρέα δὲ καὶ τἄλλα πάντα ὀπτὰ καὶ ἐξ ὕδατος ἑφθὰ σκευάζουσι· τῶν δʼ ἄλλων τῶν τοῖς μαγείροις πεφιλοτεχνημένων χυμῶν καὶ τῆς κατὰ τὰς ἀρτύσεις ποικιλίας ἀνεπινόητοι παντελῶς εἰσι.
They prepare their meat and all other foods by roasting them or boiling them in water; but of those other juices fashioned with art by cooks and the variety of seasonings they are completely ignorant.
§2.59.2σέβονται δὲ θεοὺς τὸ περιέχον πάντα καὶ ἥλιον καὶ καθόλου πάντα τὰ οὐράνια.
And they worship as gods that which contains all things and the sun, and in general all the heavenly bodies.
ἰχθύων δὲ παντοδαπῶν πλῆθος ἁλιεύοντες ποικίλως καὶ τῶν πτηνῶν οὐκ ὀλίγα θηρεύουσι.
They catch a multitude of fish of all kinds in various ways, and hunt not a few birds.
§2.59.3γίνεται δὲ παρʼ αὐτοῖς ἀκροδρύων τε πλῆθος αὐτομάτων, καὶ ἐλαῖαι φύονται καὶ ἄμπελοι, ἐξ ὧν ἔλαιόν τε ποιοῦσι δαψιλὲς καὶ οἶνον.
And there grows among them a abundance of wild fruit-trees, and olives and vines grow, from which they make abundant oil and wine.
ὄφεις τε τοῖς μεγέθεσι διαφέροντας, οὐδὲν δὲ ἀδικοῦντας τοὺς ἀνθρώπους, ἐδώδιμον ἔχειν τὴν σάρκα καὶ γλυκύτητι διαφέρουσαν.
There are also snakes outstanding in size, but doing no harm to humans, whose flesh is edible and outstanding in sweetness.
§2.59.4ἐσθῆτας δὲ αὐτοὺς κατασκευάζειν ἔκ τινων καλάμων ἐχόντων ἐν τῷ μέσῳ χνοῦν λαμπρὸν καὶ μαλακόν, ὃν συνάγοντας καὶ τοῖς θαλαττίοις ὀστρέοις συγκεκομμένοις μίσγοντας θαυμαστὰ κατασκευάζειν ἱμάτια πορφυρᾶ.
They make their garments from certain reeds which have in the middle a bright and soft down, which they collect and mix with crushed sea-shells, making marvelous purple garments.
ζῴων δὲ παρηλλαγμένας φύσεις καὶ διὰ τὸ παράδοξον ἀπιστουμένας.
The natures of the animals are peculiar and, because of their marvelous character, incredible.
§2.59.5πάντα δὲ παρʼ αὐτοῖς ὡρισμένην ἔχειν τάξιν τὰ κατὰ τὴν δίαιταν, οὐχ ἅμα πάντων τὰς τροφὰς καὶ τὰς αὐτὰς λαμβανόντων· διατετάχθαι δʼ ἐπί τινας ὡρισμένας ἡμέρας ποτὲ μὲν ἰχθύων βρῶσιν, ποτὲ δὲ ὀρνέων, ἔστι δʼ ὅτε χερσαίων, ἐνίοτε δὲ ἐλαιῶν καὶ τῶν λιτοτάτων προσοψημάτων.
And all matters concerning their diet have a fixed order among them, since they do not all take their food at the same time nor the same foods; but it is prescribed for certain fixed days that at one time they eat fish, at another birds, sometimes land animals, and occasionally olives and the simplest side-dishes.
§2.59.6ἐναλλὰξ δὲ αὐτοὺς τοὺς μὲν ἀλλήλοις διακονεῖν, τοὺς δὲ ἁλιεύειν, τοὺς δὲ περὶ τὰς τέχνας εἶναι, ἄλλους δὲ περὶ ἄλλα τῶν χρησίμων ἀσχολεῖσθαι, τοὺς δʼ ἐκ περιόδου κυκλικῆς λειτουργεῖν, πλὴν τῶν ἤδη γεγηρακότων.
And in turn some of them serve one another, others fish, others apply themselves to crafts, and others occupy themselves with other useful tasks, while still others perform public services in a cyclical rotation, except for those who are already aged.
§2.59.7ἔν τε ταῖς ἑορταῖς καὶ ταῖς εὐωχίαις λέγεσθαί τε καὶ ᾅδεσθαι παρʼ αὐτοῖς εἰς τοὺς θεοὺς ὕμνους καὶ ἐγκώμια, μάλιστα δὲ εἰς τὸν ἥλιον, οὗ τάς τε νήσους καὶ ἑαυτοὺς προσαγορεύουσι.
And at their festivals and feasts, hymns and praises to the gods are spoken and sung among them, and especially to the sun, after whom they name both the islands and themselves.
§2.59.8θάπτουσι δὲ τοὺς τελευτήσαντας ὅταν ἄμπωτις γένηται καταχωννύντες εἰς τὴν ἅμμον, ὥστε κατὰ τὴν πλημυρίδα τὸν τόπον ἐπιχώννυσθαι.
And they bury their dead when the ebb tide occurs, interring them in the sand, so that during the flood tide the place is covered over.
τοὺς δὲ καλάμους, ἐξ ὧν ὁ καρπὸς τῆς τροφῆς γίνεται, φασὶ σπιθαμιαίους ὄντας τὸ πάχος κατὰ τὰς τῆς σελήνης ἀναπληρώσεις ἀναπληροῦσθαι, καὶ πάλιν κατὰ τὰς ἐλαττώσεις ἀνὰ λόγον ταπεινοῦσθαι.
And they say that the reeds, from which the fruit for their food is obtained, being a span in thickness, fill out in accordance with the waxings of the moon, and again diminish proportionally in accordance with its wanings.
§2.59.9τὸ δὲ τῶν θερμῶν πηγῶν ὕδωρ γλυκὺ καὶ ὑγιεινὸν ὂν διαφυλάττει τὴν θερμασίαν, καὶ οὐδέποτε ψύχεται, ἐὰν μὴ ψυχρὸν ὕδωρ ἢ οἶνος συμμίσγηται.
And the water of the hot springs, being sweet and healthy, preserves its heat and is never cooled, unless cold water or wine is mixed with it.
