§2.15.1ταφὰς δὲ τῶν τελευτησάντων ἰδίως οἱ κατὰ τὴν Αἰθιοπίαν ποιοῦνται· ταριχεύσαντες γὰρ τὰ σώματα καὶ περιχέαντες αὐτοῖς πολλὴν ὕελον ἱστᾶσιν ἐπὶ στήλης, ὥστε τοῖς παριοῦσι φαίνεσθαι διὰ τῆς ὑέλου τὸ τοῦ τετελευτηκότος σῶμα, καθάπερ Ἡρόδοτος εἴρηκε.
The people of Ethiopia perform the burials of their dead in a peculiar manner; for having embalmed the bodies and poured a great deal of glass around them, they set them up on a pillar, so that to those who pass by, the body of the deceased is visible through the glass, just as Herodotus has stated.
§2.15.2Κτησίας δʼ ὁ Κνίδιος ἀποφαινόμενος τοῦτον σχεδιάζειν, αὐτός φησι τὸ μὲν σῶμα ταριχεύεσθαι, τὴν μέντοι γε ὕελον μὴ περιχεῖσθαι γυμνοῖς τοῖς σώμασι· κατακαυθήσεσθαι γὰρ ταῦτα καὶ λυμανθέντα τελέως τὴν ὁμοιότητα μὴ δυνήσεσθαι διατηρεῖν.
But Ctesias of Cnidus, declaring that he is making up a story, himself says that while the body is embalmed, the glass is certainly not poured around the bare bodies; for these would be burned up and completely disfigured, and would not be able to preserve their likeness.
§2.15.3διὸ καὶ χρυσῆν εἰκόνα κατασκευάζεσθαι κοίλην, εἰς ἣν ἐντεθέντος τοῦ νεκροῦ περὶ τὴν εἰκόνα χεῖσθαι τὴν ὕελον· τοῦ δὲ κατασκευάσματος τεθέντος ἐπὶ τὸν τάφον διὰ τῆς ὑέλου φανῆναι τὸν χρυσὸν ἀφωμοιωμένον τῷ τετελευτηκότι.
Therefore, a hollow golden image is prepared, into which the corpse is placed, and then the glass is poured around the image; and when this structure is placed upon the tomb, the gold, fashioned in the likeness of the deceased, is visible through the glass.
§2.15.4τοὺς μὲν οὖν πλουσίους αὐτῶν οὕτω θάπτεσθαί φησι, τοὺς δʼ ἐλάττονας καταλιπόντας οὐσίας ἀργυρᾶς τυγχάνειν εἰκόνος, τοὺς δὲ πένητας κεραμίνης· τὴν δὲ ὕελον πᾶσιν ἐξαρκεῖν διὰ τὸ πλείστην γεννᾶσθαι κατὰ τὴν Αἰθιοπίαν καὶ τελέως παρὰ τοῖς ἐγχωρίοις ἐπιπολάζειν.
Now, he says that the wealthy among them are buried in this manner, while those who leave behind less property obtain a silver image, and the poor a clay one; and that the glass is sufficient for everyone because it is produced in greatest abundance in Ethiopia and is completely common among the inhabitants.
§2.15.5περὶ δὲ τῶν νομίμων τῶν παρὰ τοῖς Αἰθίοψι καὶ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν γινομένων ἐν τῇ τούτων χώρᾳ τὰ κυριώτατα καὶ μνήμης ἄξια μικρὸν ὕστερον ἀναγράψομεν, ὅταν καὶ τὰς παλαιὰς αὐτῶν πράξεις καὶ μυθολογίας διεξίωμεν.
Concerning the customs of the Ethiopians and other things that occur in their land, we shall record the most important and memorable a little later, when we also go through their ancient history and mythology.
