§1.60.1μετὰ δὲ τοῦτον τὸν βασιλέα συχνοὶ τῶν διαδεξαμένων τὴν ἀρχήν τινες οὐδὲν ἔπραξαν ἀναγραφῆς ἄξιον.
After this king, many of those who succeeded to the rule did nothing worthy of record.
πολλαῖς δʼ ὕστερον γενεαῖς Ἄμασις γενόμενος βασιλεὺς ἦρχε τῶν ὄχλων βιαιότερον· πολλοὺς μὲν γὰρ παρὰ τὸ δίκαιον ἐτιμωρεῖτο, συχνοὺς δὲ τῶν οὐσιῶν ἐστέρισκε, πᾶσι δʼ ὑπεροπτικῶς καὶ κατὰ πᾶν ὑπερηφάνως προσεφέρετο.
But many generations later, Amasis became king and ruled the masses rather violently; for he punished many contrary to justice, deprived many of their property, and behaved toward all with contempt and in every way with arrogance.
§1.60.2μέχρι μὲν οὖν τινος οἱ πάσχοντες ἐκαρτέρουν, οὐ δυνάμενοι κατʼ οὐδένα τρόπον ἀμύνασθαι τοὺς πλέον ἰσχύοντας· ἐπεὶ δʼ Ἀκτισάνης ὁ τῶν Αἰθιόπων βασιλεὺς ἐστράτευσεν ἐπʼ αὐτόν, τότε τοῦ μίσους καιρὸν λαβόντος ἀπέστησαν οἱ πλεῖστοι.
So for a certain time those who suffered endured, being unable in any way to defend themselves against those who were more powerful; but when Actisanes, the king of the Ethiopians, marched against him, then, their hatred having found an opportunity, most of them revolted.
§1.60.3διόπερ ῥᾳδίως αὐτοῦ χειρωθέντος ἡ μὲν Αἴγυπτος ἔπεσεν ὑπὸ τὴν τῶν Αἰθιόπων βασιλείαν, ὁ δʼ Ἀκτισάνης ἀνθρωπίνως ἐνέγκας τὴν εὐτυχίαν ἐπιεικῶς προσεφέρετο τοῖς ὑποτεταγμένοις·
Therefore, he having been easily subdued, Egypt fell under the kingdom of the Ethiopians; and Actisanes, having borne his good fortune humanely, behaved leniently toward his subjects.
§1.60.4ὅτε δὴ καὶ συνετέλεσεν ἴδιόν τι περὶ τοὺς λῃστάς, οὔτε θανατώσας τοὺς ἐνόχους οὔτε ὁλοσχερῶς ἀφεὶς ἀτιμωρήτους·
At which very time he also accomplished a peculiar thing regarding the robbers, neither putting the guilty to death nor leaving them completely unpunished.
§1.60.5συναγαγὼν γὰρ ἐξ ἁπάσης τῆς χώρας τοὺς ἐν ἐγκλήμασιν ὄντας κακουργίας, καὶ τὴν διάγνωσιν αὐτῶν δικαιοτάτην ποιησάμενος, ἤθροισεν ἅπαντας τοὺς καταδεδικασμένους, ἀποτεμὼν δʼ αὐτῶν τοὺς μυκτῆρας κατῴκισεν ἐν τοῖς ἐσχάτοις τῆς ἐρήμου, κτίσας πόλιν τὴν ἀπὸ τοῦ συμπτώματος τῶν οἰκητόρων Ῥινοκόλουρα προσαγορευθεῖσαν.
For having gathered from the whole country those who were under accusation of criminal activity, and having made a most just examination of them, he assembled all those who had been condemned, and having cut off their noses, he settled them in the extremities of the desert, having founded a city which, after the misfortune of its inhabitants, was named Rhinocolura.
§1.60.6αὕτη δὲ κειμένη πρὸς τοῖς μεθορίοις τῆς Αἰγύπτου καὶ Συρίας οὐ μακρὰν τοῦ παρήκοντος αἰγιαλοῦ πάντων σχεδὸν τῶν πρὸς ἀνθρωπίνην δίαιταν ἀνηκόντων ἐστέρηται·
And this city, situated at the borders of Egypt and Syria, not far from the extending shore, is deprived of almost everything belonging to human livelihood.
§1.60.7περιέχει μὲν γὰρ αὐτὴν χώρα πλήρης ἁλμυρίδος ἐντὸς δὲ τοῦ τείχους ὀλίγον ἐστὶν ὕδωρ ἐν φρέασι, καὶ τοῦτο διεφθαρμένον καὶ παντελῶς τῇ γεύσει πικρόν.
For a land full of salt surrounds it, and within the wall there is little water in wells, and even this is spoiled and completely bitter to the taste.
§1.60.8κατῴκισε δʼ αὐτοὺς εἰς ταύτην τὴν χώραν, ὅπως μήτε τοὺς ἐξ ἀρχῆς ἐπιτηδευθέντας βίους διατηροῦντες λυμαίνωνται τοὺς μηδὲν ἀδικοῦντας, μήτε κατὰ τὰς πρὸς τοὺς ἄλλους ἐπιμιξίας ἀγνοούμενοι λανθάνωσιν.
And he settled them in this land so that, neither by maintaining their originally practiced ways of life they might harm those who do no wrong, nor, in their mixing with others, they might escape notice by being unrecognized.
§1.60.9ἀλλʼ ὅμως ἐκριφέντες εἰς χώραν ἔρημον καὶ πάντων σχεδὸν τῶν χρησίμων ἄπορον ἐπενόησαν βίον οἰκεῖον τῆς περὶ αὐτοὺς ἐνδείας, ἀναγκαζούσης τῆς φύσεως πρὸς τὴν ἀπορίαν πάντα μηχανᾶσθαι.
But nevertheless, having been cast out into a desert land and one lacking almost all useful things, they devised a livelihood suitable to the deprivation surrounding them, nature forcing them to devise everything in response to their lack.
§1.60.10καλάμην γὰρ κείροντες ἐκ τῆς ὁμόρου χώρας, καὶ ταύτην σχίζοντες, λίνα παραμήκη κατεσκεύαζον, ταῦτα δὲ παρὰ τὸν αἰγιαλὸν ἐπὶ πολλοὺς σταδίους ἱστάντες τὰς θήρας τῶν ὀρτύγων ἐποιοῦντο· φέρονται γὰρ οὗτοι κατʼ ἀγέλας μείζονας ἐκ τοῦ πελάγους· οὓς θηρεύοντες ἤθροιζον πλῆθος ἱκανὸν εἰς διατροφὴν ἑαυτοῖς.
For cutting reeds from the neighboring land and splitting them, they made very long nets, and setting these up along the shore for many stades, they engaged in the hunting of quails; for these fly in larger flocks from the sea, and by hunting them they gathered a sufficient quantity for their own sustenance.
