§1.10.1φασὶ τοίνυν Αἰγύπτιοι κατὰ τὴν ἐξ ἀρχῆς τῶν ὅλων γένεσιν πρώτους ἀνθρώπους γενέσθαι κατὰ τὴν Αἴγυπτον διά τε τὴν εὐκρασίαν τῆς χώρας καὶ διὰ τὴν φύσιν τοῦ Νείλου.
The Egyptians, then, say that at the original generation of the universe the first men came into being in Egypt, both because of the temperate climate of the land and because of the nature of the Nile.
τοῦτον γὰρ πολύγονον ὄντα καὶ τὰς τροφὰς αὐτοφυεῖς παρεχόμενον ῥᾳδίως ἐκτρέφειν τὰ ζωογονηθέντα· τήν τε γὰρ τοῦ καλάμου ῥίζαν καὶ τὸν λωτόν, ἔτι δὲ τὸν Αἰγύπτιον κύαμον καὶ τὸ καλούμενον κορσαῖον καὶ πολλὰ τοιαῦθʼ ἕτερα τροφὴν ἑτοίμην παρέχεσθαι τῷ γένει τῶν ἀνθρώπων.
For this river, being highly fertile and providing self-growing sustenance, easily rears the living creatures that have been generated; indeed, both the root of the reed and the lotus, and also the Egyptian bean and the so-called korsaion and many other such things, provide ready food for the race of men.
§1.10.2τῆς δʼ ἐξ ἀρχῆς παρʼ αὐτοῖς ζωογονίας τεκμήριον πειρῶνται φέρειν τὸ καὶ νῦν ἔτι τὴν ἐν Θηβαΐδι χώραν κατά τινας καιροὺς τοσούτους καὶ τηλικούτους μῦς γεννᾶν ὥστε τοὺς ἰδόντας τὸ γινόμενον ἐκπλήττεσθαι· ἐνίους γὰρ αὐτῶν ἕως μὲν τοῦ στήθους καὶ τῶν ἐμπροσθίων ποδῶν διατετυπῶσθαι καὶ κίνησιν λαμβάνειν, τὸ δὲ λοιπὸν τοῦ σώματος ἔχειν ἀδιατύπωτον, μενούσης ἔτι κατὰ φύσιν τῆς βώλου.
As proof of the original generation of living creatures among them, they attempt to bring forward the fact that even now the land in the Thebaid at certain times generates mice in such numbers and of such size that those who see what happens are astonished; for some of them are fully formed as far as the breast and front feet and are taking on movement, while the rest of the body is unformed, the clod of earth still remaining in its natural state.
§1.10.3ἐκ τούτου δʼ εἶναι φανερὸν ὅτι κατὰ τὴν ἐξ ἀρχῆς τοῦ κόσμου σύστασιν τῆς γῆς εὐκράτου καθεστώσης μάλιστʼ ἂν ἔσχε τὴν γένεσιν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἡ κατʼ Αἴγυπτον χώρα· καὶ γὰρ νῦν, οὐδαμοῦ τῆς ἄλλης γῆς φυούσης οὐδὲν τῶν τοιούτων, ἐν μόνῃ ταύτῃ θεωρεῖσθαί τινα τῶν ἐμψύχων παραδόξως ζωογονούμενα.
And from this they say it is clear that, at the original constitution of the universe, when the earth was temperate, the land of Egypt would most likely have had the generation of men; for even now, while no other part of the earth generates anything of the sort, in this land alone certain of the living creatures are observed to be marvelously generated.
§1.10.4καθόλου δὲ λέγουσιν, εἴτε κατὰ τὸν ἐπὶ Δευκαλίωνος γενόμενον κατακλυσμὸν ἐφθάρη τὰ πλεῖστα τῶν ζῴων, εἰκὸς μάλιστα διασεσῶσθαι τοὺς κατὰ τὴν Αἴγυπτον ὑπὸ τὴν μεσημβρίαν κατοικοῦντας, ὡς ἂν τῆς χώρας αὐτῶν οὔσης ἀνόμβρου κατὰ τὸ πλεῖστον, εἴτε, καθάπερ τινές φασι, παντελοῦς γενομένης τῶν ἐμψύχων φθορᾶς ἡ γῆ πάλιν ἐξ ἀρχῆς καινὰς ἤνεγκε τῶν ζῴων φύσεις, ὅμως καὶ κατὰ τοῦτον τὸν λόγον πρέπειν τὴν ἀρχηγὸν τῶν ἐμψύχων γένεσιν προσάπτειν ταύτῃ τῇ χώρᾳ.
And in general they say that, whether at the flood which occurred in the time of Deucalion most of the living creatures were destroyed, it is most likely that those who inhabit Egypt toward the south survived, on the ground that their land is for the most part without rain, or if, as some say, a complete destruction of living creatures occurred and the earth again from the beginning bore new natures of living creatures, nevertheless even according to this reasoning it is fitting to attribute the original generation of living creatures to this land.
§1.10.5τῆς γὰρ παρὰ τοῖς ἄλλοις ἐπομβρίας τῷ παρʼ ἑαυτοῖς γινομένῳ καύματι μιγείσης εἰκὸς εὐκρατότατον γενέσθαι τὸν ἀέρα πρὸς τὴν ἐξ ἀρχῆς τῶν πάντων ζωογονίαν.
For, the heavy rains among other peoples having been mixed with the heat occurring among themselves, it is likely that the air became most temperate for the original generation of all things.
§1.10.6καὶ γὰρ ἐν τοῖς καθʼ ἡμᾶς ἔτι χρόνοις κατὰ τὴν ἐπίκλυστον Αἴγυπτον ἐν τοῖς ὀψίμοις τῶν ὑδάτων φανερῶς ὁρᾶσθαι γεννωμένας φύσεις ἐμψύχων· §1.10.7ὅταν γὰρ τοῦ ποταμοῦ τὴν ἀναχώρησιν ποιουμένου τὴν πρώτην τῆς ἰλύος ὁ ἥλιος διαξηράνῃ, φασὶ συνίστασθαι ζῷα, τινὰ μὲν εἰς τέλος ἀπηρτισμένα, τινὰ δὲ ἡμιτελῆ καὶ πρὸς αὐτῇ συμφυῆ τῇ γῇ.
For indeed even in our own times, in flooded Egypt, during the subsiding of the waters, the natures of living creatures are clearly seen being generated; for when, as the river makes its first withdrawal, the sun dries the mud, they say that animals are formed, some fully completed, and others unfinished and grown together with the earth itself.
