Alexander, having set out for Hyrcania, on the third day encamped near the city called Hecatompylos.
Since this region was prosperous and there was a great abundance of all things pertaining to enjoyment, he refreshed his army there for several days.
Having advanced one hundred and fifty stades, he encamped near a large rock; under its base there was a wondrous cave worthy of a god, from which flowed a great river called Stiboites.
This river, rushing with a violent current for three stades, splits into two channels around a certain breast-shaped rock, which has beneath itself an immense chasm in the earth; plunging into this with a great roar and becoming foamy through its impact against the rock, it is carried underground for three hundred stades, and then opens its outlets again.
Alexander, having invaded the territory of the Hyrcanians with his army, subdued all the cities within it as far as the sea called Caspian, which some name the Hyrcanian.
In this sea, they say, many large serpents are produced, and fish of all kinds which differ greatly in color from those found among us.
Passing through Hyrcania, he arrived at the villages called and indeed being "Prosperous"; for the soil of these places far surpasses that of others in its fruits.
For they say that each of the vines yields a metretes of wine, and some of the fig trees bear ten medimnoi of dried figs.
The grain left behind at harvest time, falling upon the earth, sprouts without being sown and brings to maturity an abundant crop.
There is also a tree among the inhabitants similar to an oak in appearance, which drips honey from its leaves; some people gather this and enjoy its abundant use.
There is also a winged creature in the country called anthredon, which, though smaller in size than a bee, is of the greatest utility; for feeding upon the mountain side, it gathers all kinds of flowers, and dwelling in hollow rocks and lightning-struck trees, it fashions wax and produces a liquid distinguished by its sweetness, which is not much inferior to our honey.
