§17.74.1τοῦ δʼ ἔτους τούτου διεληλυθότος Ἀθήνησι μὲν ἦρχε Κηφισοφῶν, ἐν Ῥώμῃ δὲ κατεστάθησαν ὕπατοι Γάιος Οὐαλλέριος καὶ Μάρκος Κλώδιος.
When this year had passed, Cephisophon was archon in Athens, and in Rome Gaius Valerius and Marcus Clodius were appointed consuls.
ἐπὶ δὲ τούτων Βῆσσος μὲν μετὰ τὴν Δαρείου τελευτὴν μετὰ Ναβάρνου καὶ Βαρξάεντος καὶ πολλῶν ἄλλων διαφυγὼν τὰς Ἀλεξάνδρου χεῖρας διήνυσε μὲν εἰς τὴν Βακτριανήν, ἀποδεδειγμένος δὲ ταύτης σατράπης ὑπὸ Δαρείου καὶ τοῖς πλήθεσι γεγονὼς γνώριμος διὰ τὴν ἀρχὴν παρεκάλει τὰ πλήθη τῆς ἐλευθερίας ἀντέχεσθαι·
Under their term, Bessus, having escaped the hands of Alexander after the death of Darius along with Nabarzanes, Barzaentes, and many others, made his way to Bactria; having been appointed satrap of this region by Darius and being well known to the multitudes because of his rule, he exhorted the multitudes to cling to their freedom.
§17.74.2ἀπεδείκνυε δὲ τὴν χώραν αὐτοῖς πολλὰ συνεργήσειν οὖσαν δυσείσβολον καὶ πλῆθος ἱκανὸν ἔχουσαν ἀνδρῶν εἰς κατάκτησιν τῆς αὐτονομίας.
He pointed out to them that the country, being difficult of access, would greatly assist them, and that it possessed a sufficient number of men for the acquisition of their autonomy.
ἐπαγγελλόμενος δὲ καθηγήσασθαι τοῦ πολέμου καὶ τὸ πλῆθος πείσας ἀνέδειξεν ἑαυτὸν βασιλέα.
Promising to lead the war himself and having persuaded the multitude, he declared himself king.
οὗτος μὲν οὖν στρατιώτας τε κατέγραφε καὶ πλῆθος ὅπλων κατεσκεύαζε καὶ τἄλλα φιλοτίμως πρὸς τὴν κατεπείγουσαν χρείαν παρεσκευάζετο·
Thus, he began to enlist soldiers, manufacture a large quantity of weapons, and zealously prepare other things for the pressing need.
§17.74.3Ἀλέξανδρος δὲ ὁρῶν τοὺς Μακεδόνας τέλος τῆς στρατείας τὴν Δαρείου τελευτὴν τάττοντας καὶ μετεώρους ὄντας πρὸς τὴν εἰς τὴν πατρίδα ἐπάνοδον τούτους μὲν ἀθροίσας εἰς ἐκκλησίαν καὶ λόγοις οἰκείοις παρορμήσας εὐπειθεῖς πρὸς τὴν ὑπολειπομένην στρατείαν παρεσκεύασεν, τοὺς δʼ ἀπὸ τῶν Ἑλληνίδων πόλεων συμμαχήσαντας συναγαγὼν καὶ περὶ τῶν πεπραγμένων ἐπαινέσας ἀπέλυσε μὲν τῆς στρατείας, ἐδωρήσατο δὲ τῶν μὲν ἱππέων ἑκάστῳ τάλαντον, τῶν δὲ πεζῶν μνᾶς δέκα, χωρὶς δὲ τούτων τούς τε ὀφειλομένους μισθοὺς ἀπέλυσε καὶ τοὺς κατὰ τὴν ἀνακομιδὴν μέχρι τῆς εἰς τὰς πατρίδας καθόδου προσέθηκεν·
Alexander, seeing that the Macedonians regarded the death of Darius as the end of the campaign and were eager for their return to their homeland, gathered them into an assembly, and having encouraged them with appropriate words, made them ready to obey the remaining campaign. Furthermore, having brought together those who had fought as allies from the Greek cities and praised them for their achievements, he dismissed them from service; he presented each of the cavalrymen with a talent and each of the infantrymen with ten minae, and besides these, he paid off the wages owed to them and added those for the return journey until their arrival in their homelands.
§17.74.4τῶν δʼ ἑλομένων μένειν ἐν τῇ στρατιᾷ τῇ μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως ἔδωκεν ἑκάστῳ τρία τάλαντα.
To those who chose to remain in the army with the king, he gave three talents to each.
μεγάλαις δὲ δωρεαῖς ἐτίμησε τοὺς στρατιώτας ἅμα μὲν φύσει μεγαλόψυχος ὤν, ἅμα δὲ τῇ διώξει τοῦ Δαρείου πολλῶν χρημάτων κεκυριευκώς·
He honored the soldiers with great gifts, being both generous by nature and having come into possession of vast funds during the pursuit of Darius.
§17.74.5παρὰ μὲν γὰρ τῶν γαζοφυλακούντων παρέλαβεν ὀκτακισχιλίων ταλάντων ἀριθμόν, χωρὶς δὲ τούτων τὰ νεμηθέντα τοῖς στρατιώταις σὺν τῷ κόσμῳ καὶ τοῖς ἐκπώμασιν ὑπῆρχε μύρια καὶ τρισχίλια τάλαντα, τὰ δὲ διακλαπέντα καὶ ἁρπαχθέντα πλείω τῶν εἰρημένων ὑπενοεῖτο.
For from the keepers of the treasures he received an amount of eight thousand talents, and apart from these, the things distributed to the soldiers, including ornaments and drinking cups, amounted to thirteen thousand talents, while those stolen and plundered were suspected to be even more than the aforementioned sums.
