§17.59.1ὡς δʼ ἤγγισαν ἀλλήλαις αἱ δυνάμεις καὶ διὰ τῶν τόξων καὶ σφενδονῶν, ἔτι δὲ τῶν ἀκοντιζομένων σαυνίων τὰ ῥιπτούμενα βέλη παρανήλωτο, πρὸς τὴν ἐκ χειρὸς μάχην κατήντησαν.
When the forces came near to each other, and the missiles thrown by means of bows and slings, and further the thrown javelins, were used up, they came down to hand-to-hand fighting.
§17.59.2καὶ πρῶτον τῶν ἱππέων συστησαμένων ἀγῶνα καὶ τῶν Μακεδόνων τῷ δεξιῷ κέρατι διαγωνιζομένων ὁ μὲν Δαρεῖος τοῦ λαιοῦ κέρατος ἡγούμενος συναγωνιστὰς εἶχε τοὺς συγγενεῖς ἱππεῖς, ἐπιλέκτους ταῖς ἀρεταῖς καὶ ταῖς εὐνοίαις, χιλίους ἐν μιᾷ περιειλημμένους εἴλῃ.
And first, when the cavalry had joined battle and the Macedonians were fighting hard on the right wing, Darius, leading the left wing, had as fellow-combatants the kinsmen cavalry, chosen for their valor and loyalty, a thousand men contained in a single squadron.
§17.59.3οὗτοι δὲ θεατὴν ἔχοντες τῆς ἰδίας ἀνδραγαθίας τὸν βασιλέα τὸ πλῆθος τῶν ἐπʼ αὐτὸν φερομένων βελῶν προθύμως ἐξεδέχοντο.
And these, having the king as a spectator of their own bravery, eagerly received the multitude of missiles flying toward him.
συνῆσαν δὲ τούτοις οἵ τε μηλοφόροι, διάφοροι ταῖς ἀνδραγαθίαις καὶ πολλοὶ κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος, πρὸς δὲ τούτοις Μάρδοι καὶ Κοσσαῖοι, ταῖς τε τῶν σωμάτων ὑπεροχαῖς καὶ ταῖς λαμπρότησι τῶν ψυχῶν θαυμαζόμενοι.
With them were both the apple-bearers, outstanding in bravery and many in number, and besides these, the Mardians and the Cossaeans, admired both for their physical stature and for the brilliance of their spirit.
§17.59.4συνηγωνίζοντο δὲ τούτοις οἵ τε περὶ τὰ βασίλεια διατρίβοντες καὶ τῶν Ἰνδῶν οἱ κράτιστοι κατʼ ἀνδρείαν.
And there fought along with them both those who frequented the palace and the strongest of the Indians in bravery.
οὗτοι μὲν οὖν μετὰ πολλῆς βοῆς ἐπιρράξαντες τοῖς πολεμίοις ἐκθύμως ἠγωνίζοντο καὶ τῷ πλήθει κατεπόνουν τοὺς Μακεδόνας·
So these, having dashed against the enemy with a great shout, fought with all their heart and by their numbers were wearing down the Macedonians.
§17.59.5Μαζαῖος δὲ τὸ δεξιὸν ἔχων κέρας καὶ μετὰ τῶν ἀρίστων ἱππέων διαγωνιζόμενος εὐθὺς κατὰ τὴν πρώτην ἔφοδον τῶν ἀνθεστώτων ἀνεῖλεν οὐκ ὀλίγους, δισχιλίους δὲ Καδουσίους καὶ χιλίους τῶν Σκυθῶν ἱππεῖς ἐπιλέκτους ἐξέπεμψε, προστάξας περιιππεῦσαι τὸ κέρας τὸ τῶν πολεμίων καὶ προσελάσαντας τῇ παρεμβολῇ τῆς ἀποσκευῆς κυριεῦσαι.
But Mazaeus, holding the right wing and fighting with the best of the cavalry, immediately in the first onset killed not a few of those opposing him, and dispatched two thousand Cadusians and a thousand select Scythian horsemen, ordering them to ride around the wing of the enemy and, having ridden to the camp, to master the baggage.
§17.59.6ὧν ὀξέως ποιησάντων τὸ προσταχθὲν καὶ παρεισπεσόντων εἰς τὴν στρατοπεδείαν τῶν Μακεδόνων τῶν αἰχμαλώτων τινὲς ἁρπάσαντες ὅπλα συνήργουν τοῖς Σκύθαις καὶ διήρπαζον τὰς ἀποσκευάς· βοὴ δʼ ἦν καὶ ταραχὴ διὰ τὸ παράδοξον καθʼ ὅλην τὴν παρεμβολήν.
When these had quickly done what was ordered and burst into the camp of the Macedonians, some of the captives, having seized weapons, helped the Scythians and plundered the baggage; and there was shouting and confusion throughout the entire camp due to the unexpectedness of the event.
§17.59.7αἱ μὲν οὖν ἄλλαι τῶν αἰχμαλωτίδων πρὸς τοὺς βαρβάρους ἀπεχώρουν, ἡ δὲ μήτηρ τοῦ Δαρείου Σισύγγαμβρις παρακαλουσῶν αὐτὴν τῶν αἰχμαλωτίδων οὐ προσέσχεν, ἀλλʼ ἐφʼ ἡσυχίας ἔμεινε φιλοφρόνως, οὔτε τῷ παραδόξῳ τῆς τύχης πιστεύσασα οὔτε τὴν πρὸς Ἀλέξανδρον εὐχαριστίαν λυμαινομένη.
Now the other female captives went over to the barbarians, but the mother of Darius, Sisygambris, although the female captives urged her, did not pay attention, but remained quietly and calmly, neither trusting in the unexpected turn of fortune nor violating her gratitude toward Alexander.
§17.59.8τέλος δὲ οἱ Σκύθαι πολλὴν τῆς ἀποσκευῆς διαρπάσαντες ἀφίππευσαν πρὸς τοὺς περὶ Μαζαῖον καὶ τὴν εὐημερίαν ἀπήγγειλαν.
Finally, the Scythians, having plundered much of the baggage, rode off to Mazaeus and his men and reported their success.
ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ τῶν περὶ Δαρεῖον τεταγμένων ἱππέων τινὲς καταπονήσαντες τῷ πλήθει τοὺς ἀνθεστῶτας Μακεδόνας φεύγειν ἠνάγκασαν.
Similarly, some of the cavalry stationed around Darius, having worn down by their numbers the opposing Macedonians, forced them to flee.
