When Themistocles was archon at Athens, Gaius Cornelius and Marcus Popilius succeeded to the consular office in Rome.
ἐπὶ δὲ τούτων Βοιωτοὶ πολλὴν τῆς Φωκίδος χώραν πορθήσαντες περὶ τὴν ὀνομαζομένην Ὕαν πόλιν ἐνίκησαν τοὺς πολεμίους καὶ κατέβαλον αὐτῶν περὶ ἑβδομήκοντα.
During their term of office, the Boeotians, having ravaged much of the territory of Phocis, defeated their enemies near the city called Hya and slew about seventy of them.
§16.56.2μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα Βοιωτοὶ περὶ Κορώνειαν συμπλακέντες τοῖς Φωκεῦσιν ἡττήθησαν καὶ συχνοὺς ἀπέβαλον.
After this, the Boeotians, clashing with the Phocians near Coroneia, were defeated and lost many men.
ἔπειτα τῶν Φωκέων κατασχόντων ἱκανάς τινας πόλεις ἐν τῇ Βοιωτίᾳ στρατεύσαντες οἱ Βοιωτοὶ καὶ τὸν σῖτον ἐκ τῆς χώρας τῶν πολεμίων φθείραντες κατὰ τὴν ἐπάνοδον ἡττήθησαν.
Then, when the Phocians had occupied several cities in Boeotia, the Boeotians made an expedition and destroyed the grain in the territory of their enemies, but were defeated on their return.
§16.56.3ἅμα δὲ τούτοις πραττομένοις Φάλαικος μὲν ὁ τῶν Φωκέων στρατηγὸς, διαβληθεὶς ὅτι πολλὰ τῶν ἱερῶν χρημάτων κέκλοφεν, ἐξέπεσεν ἐκ τῆς ἀρχῆς, ἀντὶ δὲ τούτου στρατηγῶν αἱρεθέντων τριῶν, Δεινοκράτους καὶ Καλλίου καὶ Σωφάνους, ἐγένετο ζήτησις τῶν ἱερῶν χρημάτων καὶ λόγον τοὺς κεχειρικότας οἱ Φωκεῖς ἀπῄτουν·
While these things were being done, Phalaecus, the general of the Phocians, having been accused of stealing much of the sacred funds, was ousted from his office, and when three generals were elected in his stead, namely Deinocrates, Callias, and Sophanes, an investigation into the sacred funds took place, and the Phocians demanded an accounting from those who had managed them.
ἦν δὲ πλεῖστα διῳκηκὼς Φίλων.
Now Philon had administered the greatest part of them.
§16.56.4οὗτος δʼ οὐ δυνάμενος ἀποδοῦναι τὸν λόγον κατεδικάσθη καὶ στρεβλωθεὶς ὑπὸ τῶν στρατηγῶν τοὺς μετέχοντας τῆς κλοπῆς ἐμήνυσεν, αὐτὸς δὲ ταῖς ἐσχάταις αἰκίαις περιπεσὼν οἰκείαν τῆς ἀσεβείας ἔσχε τὴν τοῦ βίου καταστροφήν.
He, being unable to render the account, was condemned, and having been tortured by the generals, disclosed those who shared in the theft, while he himself, falling into the extreme torments, met an end of his life appropriate to his impiety.
§16.56.5οἱ δὲ νοσφισάμενοι τὰ χρήματα τὰ σωζόμενα καὶ περιόντα τῶν ἐκ τῆς κλοπῆς ἀπέδωκαν, αὐτοὶ δʼ ἐθανατώθησαν ὡς ἱερόσυλοι.
Those who had embezzled the funds restored what was preserved and remained of the theft, but they themselves were put to death as temple-robbers.
τῶν δὲ προγεγενημένων στρατηγῶν ὁ μὲν πρῶτος ἄρξας Φιλόμηλος ἀπέσχετο τῶν ἀναθημάτων, ὁ δὲ δεύτερος,προσαγορευόμενος μὲν Ὀνόμαρχος, ἀδελφὸς δʼ ὢν Φιλομήλου, πλεῖστα τῶν τοῦ θεοῦ χρημάτων κατεδαπάνησε, τρίτος δὲ Φάυλλος ὁ ἀδελφὸς Ὀνομάρχου στρατηγήσας οὐκ ὀλίγα τῶν ἀναθημάτων κατέκοψεν εἰς τὰς τῶν ξένων μισθοφοράς.
Of the generals who had preceded them, the first who ruled, Philomelus, abstained from the offerings, but the second, called Onomarchus, who was the brother of Philomelus, squandered the greatest part of the god's funds, and the third, Phayllus, the brother of Onomarchus, having become general, melted down not a few of the offerings for the pay of the mercenaries.
§16.56.6τὰς γὰρ ἀνατεθείσας ὑπὸ Κροίσου τοῦ Λυδῶν βασιλέως χρυσᾶς πλίνθους, οὔσας ἑκατὸν καὶ εἴκοσι διταλάντους, κατέκοψεν εἰς νόμισμα, φιάλας δὲ χρυσᾶς τριακοσίας καὶ ἑξήκοντα διμναίους καὶ λέοντα χρυσοῦν καὶ γυναῖκα, τριάκοντα ταλάντων χρυσοῦ σταθμὸν ἀγόντων τῶν πάντων· ὥστε τὸ πᾶν κατακοπὲν χρυσίον εἰς ἀργυρίου λόγον ἀναγομένων τῶν χρημάτων εὑρίσκεσθαι τάλαντα τετρακισχίλια·
For he melted down into coinage the gold ingots dedicated by Croesus, king of the Lydians, which were one hundred and twenty in number, each weighing two talents, and three hundred and sixty gold bowls weighing two minae each, and a gold lion and a woman, the whole bringing a weight of thirty talents of gold; so that the total gold melted down, when the funds were converted to the value of silver, was found to be four thousand talents.
τῶν δʼ ἀργυρῶν ἀναθημάτων τῶν τε ὑπὸ Κροίσου καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ἁπάντων ἀνατεθέντων τοὺς πάντας στρατηγοὺς δεδαπανηκέναι τάλαντα πλείω τῶν ἑξακισχιλίων, προστιθεμένων δὲ καὶ τῶν χρυσῶν ἀναθημάτων ὑπερβάλλειν τὰ μύρια τάλαντα.
Of the silver offerings, both those dedicated by Croesus and by all the others, all the generals had spent more than six thousand talents, and if the gold offerings were added, the total exceeded ten thousand talents.
§16.56.7ἔνιοι δὲ τῶν συγγραφέων φασὶν οὐκ ἐλάττω γενέσθαι τὰ συληθέντα τῶν ἐν τοῖς Περσικοῖς θησαυροῖς ὑπʼ Ἀλεξάνδρου κατακτηθέντων.
Some of the historians say that the plundered treasures were no less than those acquired by Alexander in the Persian treasuries.
ἐπεχείρησαν δʼ οἱ περὶ τὸν Φάλαικον στρατηγοὶ καὶ τὸν ναὸν ὀρύττειν, εἰπόντος τινὸς ὡς ἐν αὐτῷ θησαυρὸς εἴη πολὺν ἔχων ἄργυρόν τε καὶ χρυσόν· καὶ τὰ περὶ τὴν ἑστίαν καὶ τὸν τρίποδα φιλοτίμως ἀνέσκαπτον.
And the generals around Phalaecus attempted even to dig up the temple, someone having said that there was a treasure inside it containing much silver and gold; and they zealously dug up the areas around the hearth and the tripod.
ὁ δὲ μηνύσας τὸν θησαυρὸν μάρτυρα παρείχετο τὸν ἐπιφανέστατον καὶ ἀρχαιότατον τῶν ποιητῶν Ὅμηρον ἐν οἷς λέγει

οὐδʼ ὅσα λάινος οὐδὸς ἀφήτορος ἐντὸς ἐέργει
Φοίβου Ἀπόλλωνος Πυθοῖ ἐνὶ πετρηέσσῃ. "
The one who disclosed the treasure offered as witness the most illustrious and ancient of the poets, Homer, in the passage where he says: "Nor all that the stone threshold of the Archer, Phoebus Apollo, encloses within rocky Pytho.
§16.56.8τῶν δὲ στρατιωτῶν ἐγχειρούντων σκάπτειν τὰ περὶ τὸν τρίποδα σεισμοὶ μεγάλοι γενόμενοι τοῖς Φωκεῦσι φόβον ἐπέστησαν, φανερῶς δὲ τῶν θεῶν προσημαινόντων τὴν κατὰ τῶν ἱεροσύλων κόλασιν ἀπέστησαν τῶν ἔργων.
"When the soldiers attempted to dig around the tripod, great earthquakes occurred and struck fear into the Phocians, and since the gods were clearly forewarning them of the punishment of temple-robbers, they desisted from the works.
ὁ δὲ τῆς παρανομίας ταύτης ἡγεμὼν Φίλων ὁ προειρημένος ταχὺ τῷ δαιμονίῳ τὰς προσηκούσας δίκας ἐξέτισε.
And the leader of this lawlessness, the aforementioned Philon, quickly paid the appropriate penalty to the divine power.
