Agesilaus in Asia and the Defection of Rhodes under Conon

Passage 373 of 723 · Greek

Summary

King Agesilaus of Sparta campaigns in Asia and ravages Persian territory, while at sea, Conon wins over the Rhodians from their alliance with Sparta and captures grain ships sent from Egypt.

§14.79.1κατὰ δὲ τὴν Ἑλλάδα Λακεδαιμόνιοι προορώμενοι τὸ μέγεθος τοῦ πρὸς Πέρσας πολέμου, τὸν ἕτερον τῶν βασιλέων Ἀγησίλαον ἐπέστησαν τοῖς πράγμασιν.
In Greece, the Lacedaemonians, foreseeing the magnitude of the war against the Persians, appointed Agesilaus, one of their two kings, to the head of affairs.
οὗτος δʼ ἑξακισχιλίους στρατιώτας ἐπιλέξας, τριάκοντα δὲ τῶν πολιτῶν εἰς τὸ συνέδριον τοὺς ἀρίστους κατατάξας, διεβίβασε τὴν δύναμιν ἐκ τῆς Αὐλίδος εἰς Ἔφεσον.
He, having selected six thousand soldiers, and having enrolled thirty of the best of the citizens in the council, transported his force from Aulis to Ephesus.
§14.79.2ἐκεῖ δὲ στρατολογήσας τετρακισχιλίους, προήγαγε τὴν δύναμιν εἰς ὕπαιθρον, οὖσαν πεζῶν μὲν μυρίων, ἱππέων δὲ τετρακοσίων· ἠκολούθει δʼ ἀγοραῖος αὐτοῖς ὄχλος καὶ τῆς ἁρπαγῆς χάριν οὐκ ἐλάττων τοῦ προειρημένου.
And having recruited four thousand men there, he led his force into the open country, which consisted of ten thousand infantry and four hundred cavalry; and a crowd of camp-followers and plundering rabble followed them, no less in number than the aforementioned force.
§14.79.3διεξιὼν δὲ τὸ Καΰστριον πεδίον, διέφθειρε τὴν χώραν τὴν ὑπὸ τοὺς Πέρσας οὖσαν, μέχρι ὅτου κατήντησεν εἰς Κύμην.
And passing through the Caystrian plain, he devastated the territory that was under the Persians until he arrived at Cyme.
ἐκεῖθεν δʼ ὁρμηθεὶς τὸ πλεῖστον τοῦ θέρους τήν τε Φρυγίαν καὶ τὰ συνεχῆ διετέλεσε πορθῶν, καὶ τὴν δύναμιν ἐμπλήσας ὠφελείας ὑπὸ τὸ φθινόπωρον ἀνέκαμψεν εἰς Ἔφεσον.
Setting out from there, he spent most of the summer plundering Phrygia and the adjacent areas, and having filled his force with booty, he returned to Ephesus toward autumn.
§14.79.4τούτων δὲ πραττομένων Λακεδαιμόνιοι μὲν πρέσβεις ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς Νεφερέα τὸν Αἰγύπτου βασιλέα περὶ συμμαχίας, ὃς ἀντὶ τῆς βοηθείας ἐδωρήσατο σκευὴν τοῖς Σπαρτιάταις ἑκατὸν τριήρεσι, σίτου δὲ μυριάδας πεντήκοντα.
While these things were being done, the Lacedaemonians sent ambassadors to Nephereus, the king of Egypt, concerning an alliance; and he, in return for their assistance, presented the Spartans with equipment for one hundred triremes and fifty myriad measures of grain.
Φάραξ δὲ ὁ τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων ναύαρχος ἀναχθεὶς ἐκ Ῥόδου ναυσὶν ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι κατέπλευσε τῆς Καρίας πρὸς Σάσανδα, φρούριον ἀπέχον τῆς Καύνου σταδίους ἑκατὸν πεντήκοντα.
And Pharax, the admiral of the Lacedaemonians, putting to sea from Rhodes with one hundred and twenty ships, sailed to Sasanda in Caria, a fortress distant one hundred and fifty stades from Caunus.
§14.79.5ἐκεῖθεν δὲ ὁρμώμενος ἐπολιόρκει τὴν Καῦνον, καὶ Κόνωνα μὲν τὸν τοῦ βασιλικοῦ στόλου τὴν ἡγεμονίαν ἔχοντα, διατρίβοντα δʼ ἐν Καύνῳ μετὰ νεῶν τεσσαράκοντα.
Setting out from there, he besieged Caunus, and also Conon, who had the command of the royal fleet and was staying in Caunus with forty ships.
Ἀρταφέρνους δὲ καὶ Φαρναβάζου μετὰ πολλῆς δυνάμεως παραβοηθήσαντος τοῖς Καυνίοις, ὁ Φάραξ ἔλυσε τὴν πολιορκίαν καὶ μετὰ τοῦ στόλου παντὸς ἀπῆρεν εἰς Ῥόδον.
But when Artaphernes and Pharnabazus came to the aid of the Caunians with a large force, Pharax raised the siege and departed with his entire fleet to Rhodes.
After this, Conon, having assembled eighty triremes, sailed to the Chersonesus, while the Rhodians, having expelled the Peloponnesian fleet, revolted from the Lacedaemonians and received Conon with his entire fleet into their city.
And those Lacedaemonians who were bringing the grain presented from Egypt, being ignorant of the revolt of the Rhodians, sailed confidently toward the island; but the Rhodians and Conon, the admiral of the Persians, having brought the ships into the harbors, filled their city with the grain.
§14.79.8παρεγενήθησαν δὲ τῷ Κόνωνι τριήρεις ἐνενήκοντα, δέκα μὲν ἀπὸ Κιλικίας, ὀγδοήκοντα δʼ ἀπὸ Φοινίκης, ὧν ὁ Σιδωνίων δυνάστης εἶχε τὴν ἡγεμονίαν.
And ninety triremes arrived to Conon, ten from Cilicia and eighty from Phoenicia, of which the ruler of the Sidonians had the command.

Notes

  1. §14.79.2οὖσαν — The feminine singular accusative participle οὖσαν modifies the preceding noun τὴν δύναμιν (feminine singular accusative) in an attributive sense, introducing the description of the force's composition.
  2. §14.79.4σκευὴν ... ἑκατὸν τριήρεσι — The dative ἑκατὸν τριήρεσι functions as a dative of reference or purpose limiting the noun σκευήν, meaning "equipment for one hundred triremes."
  3. §14.79.5καὶ Κόνωνα μὲν — The proper name Κόνωνα (accusative) is coordinated with the city name τὴν Καῦνον as a direct object of the verb ἐπολιόρκει, indicating that Pharax besieged both the city of Caunus and Conon who was inside it.
