§13.59.1ἅμα δὲ τούτοις πραττομένοις εἰς τὸν Ἀκράγαντα κατήντησαν στρατιῶται τρισχίλιοι παρὰ Συρακοσίων ἐπίλεκτοι, προαπεσταλμένοι κατὰ σπουδὴν ἐπὶ τὴν βοήθειαν.
At the same time that these things were taking place, three thousand elite soldiers from the Syracusans, who had been sent in advance in haste for assistance, arrived at Acragas.
πυθόμενοι δὲ τὴν πόλιν ἡλωκυῖαν, πρέσβεις ἀπέστειλαν, παρακαλοῦντες τὸν Ἀννίβαν τούς τε αἰχμαλώτους ἀπολυτρῶσαι καὶ τῶν θεῶν τοὺς ναοὺς ἐᾶσαι.
Having learned that the city had been captured, they sent envoys, entreating Hannibal to ransom the captives and to spare the temples of the gods.
§13.59.2ὁ δʼ Ἀννίβας ἀπεκρίθη, τοὺς μὲν Σελινουντίους μὴ δυναμένους τηρεῖν τὴν ἐλευθερίαν πεῖραν τῆς δουλείας λήψεσθαι, τοὺς δὲ θεοὺς ἐκτὸς Σελινοῦντος οἴχεσθαι προσκόψαντας τοῖς ἐνοικοῦσιν.
Hannibal replied that the Selinuntines, because they had been unable to preserve their freedom, would make trial of slavery, and that the gods had departed out of Selinus, having become offended with the inhabitants.
§13.59.3ὅμως δὲ τῶν πεφευγότων Ἐμπεδίωνα πρεσβευτὴν ἀποστειλάντων, τούτῳ μὲν ὁ Ἀννίβας τὰς οὐσίας ἀποκατέστησεν· ἀεὶ γὰρ τὰ Καρχηδονίων ἦν πεφρονηκὼς καὶ πρὸ τῆς πολιορκίας τοῖς πολίταις συμβεβουλευκὼς μὴ πολεμεῖν Καρχηδονίους·
Nevertheless, when the fugitives sent Empedion as an envoy, Hannibal restored his property to him; for he had always favored the cause of the Carthaginians, and before the siege had advised the citizens not to make war on the Carthaginians.
ἐχαρίσατο δʼ αὐτῷ τοὺς συγγενεῖς τοὺς ὄντας ἐν τοῖς αἰχμαλώτοις, καὶ τοῖς ἐκπεφευγόσι Σελινουντίοις ἔδωκεν ἐξουσίαν τὴν πόλιν οἰκεῖν καὶ τὴν χώραν γεωργεῖν τελοῦντας φόρον τοῖς Καρχηδονίοις.
He also granted him his relatives who were among the captives, and to the Selinuntines who had fled he gave permission to inhabit the city and to cultivate the land, on condition of paying tribute to the Carthaginians.
§13.59.4αὕτη μὲν οὖν ἡ πόλις ἀπὸ τῆς κτίσεως οἰκηθεῖσα χρόνον ἐτῶν διακοσίων τεσσαράκοντα δύο ἑάλω.
Thus this city was captured, after having been inhabited for a period of two hundred and forty-two years from its founding.
ὁ δὲ Ἀννίβας περιελὼν τὰ τείχη τῆς Σελινοῦντος ἀνέζευξε μετὰ πάσης τῆς δυνάμεως ἐπὶ τὴν Ἱμέραν, ἐπιθυμῶν μάλιστα ταύτην κατασκάψαι τὴν πόλιν.
Hannibal, having demolished the walls of Selinus, marched with his entire army against Himera, desiring above all things to raze this city to the ground.
§13.59.5διὰ ταύτην γὰρ ὁ μὲν πατὴρ αὐτοῦ φυγὰς ἦν, ὁ δὲ προπάτωρ Ἀμίλκας πρὸς ταύτῃ καταστρατηγηθεὶς ὑπὸ Γέλωνος ἀνῃρέθη, καὶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ πεντεκαίδεκα μυριάδες στρατιωτῶν ἀνῃρέθησαν, ἄλλαι δὲ οὐκ ἐλάττους τούτων ᾐχμαλωτίσθησαν.
For on account of this city his father indeed had been an exile, and his grandfather Hamilcar, having been outgeneralled by Gelon near it, had been slain, and along with him one hundred and fifty thousand soldiers were slain, and no fewer than these others were taken captive.
§13.59.6ὑπὲρ ὧν σπεύδων τιμωρίαν λαβεῖν Ἀννίβας τέτρασι μυριάσιν οὐκ ἄπωθεν τῆς πόλεως ἐπί τινων λόφων κατεστρατοπέδευσε, τῇ δʼ ἄλλῃ δυνάμει πάσῃ περιεστρατοπέδευσε τὴν πόλιν, προσγενομένων ἄλλων παρά τε Σικελῶν καὶ Σικανῶν δισμυρίων στρατιωτῶν.
Hannibal, eager to exact vengeance for these things, camped with forty thousand men on certain hills not far from the city, and with all the rest of his army he besieged the city, there being added besides twenty thousand soldiers from the Sicels and Sicani.
§13.59.7στήσας δὲ μηχανὰς τὸ τεῖχος κατὰ πλείονας τόπους ἐσάλευε, καὶ πολλῷ πλήθει διαγωνιζόμενος ἐκ διαδοχῆς κατεπόνει τοὺς πολιορκουμένους, ἅτε καὶ τῶν στρατιωτῶν ἐπηρμένων ταῖς εὐτυχίαις.
Having set up siege engines, he shook the wall in several places, and fighting with a great multitude in successive shifts, he wore out the besieged, inasmuch as the soldiers were also elated by their successes.
§13.59.8ὑπώρυττε δὲ καὶ τὰ τείχη, καὶ ξύλοις ὑπήρειδεν, ὧν ἐμπρησθέντων ταχὺ πολὺ μέρος τοῦ τείχους ἔπεσεν.
He also undermined the walls and supported them with wooden beams, which being set on fire, a large part of the wall quickly fell.
ἔνθα δὴ συνέβαινε καρτερωτάτην μάχην γίνεσθαι, τῶν μὲν βιαζομένων ἐντὸς τοῦ τείχους παρεισπεσεῖν, τῶν δὲ φοβουμένων μὴ ταὐτὰ πάθωσι τοῖς Σελινουντίοις.
There indeed it happened that a most fierce battle took place, some forcing their way to burst inside the wall, and others fearing lest they suffer the same fate as the Selinuntines.
§13.59.9διὸ καὶ τὸν ἔσχατον ἀγῶνα τιθεμένων αὐτῶν ὑπὲρ τέκνων καὶ γονέων καὶ τῆς περιμαχήτου πᾶσι πατρίδος, ἐξεώσθησαν οἱ βάρβαροι, καὶ ταχὺ τὸ μέρος τοῦ τείχους ἀνῳκοδόμησαν.
Therefore, since they fought to the last extremity for their children and parents and their homeland, which is fought for by all, the barbarians were driven out, and they quickly rebuilt the part of the wall.
παρεγενήθησαν δʼ αὐτοῖς εἰς τὴν βοήθειαν οἵ τʼ ἐξ Ἀκράγαντος Συρακόσιοι καί τινες τῶν ἄλλων συμμάχων, οἱ πάντες εἰς τετρακισχιλίους, ὧν Διοκλῆς ὁ Συρακόσιος εἶχε τὴν ἡγεμονίαν.
And there arrived to their assistance both the Syracusans from Acragas and some of the other allies, in all about four thousand, of whom Diocles the Syracusan had the command.
