§13.50.1αὐτοὶ δʼ εἰς τρία μέρη διείλαντο τὸ ναυτικόν, καὶ τοῦ μὲν ἦρχεν Ἀλκιβιάδης, τοῦ δὲ Θηραμένης, τοῦ δὲ τρίτου Θρασύβουλος.
They divided the navy into three parts, of which Alcibiades commanded one, Theramenes the second, and Thrasybulus the third.
Ἀλκιβιάδης μὲν οὖν μετὰ τοῦ καθʼ αὑτὸν μέρους πολὺ προέπλευσε τῶν ἄλλων, βουλόμενος προκαλέσασθαι τοὺς Λακεδαιμονίους εἰς ναυμαχίαν· Θηραμένης δὲ καὶ Θρασύβουλος ἐφιλοτέχνουν εἰς τὸ κυκλώσασθαι καὶ τῆς εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἐπανόδου τοὺς ἐκπλεύσαντας εἶρξαι.
Alcibiades, then, sailed far ahead of the others with his own division, wishing to challenge the Lacedaemonians to a sea-battle; but Theramenes and Thrasybulus devised a plan to encircle them and block those who had sailed out from returning to the city.
§13.50.2Μίνδαρος δὲ τὰς μὲν Ἀλκιβιάδου ναῦς εἴκοσι μόνας ὁρῶν προσφερομένας, τὰς δʼ ἄλλας ἀγνοῶν, κατεφρόνησε, καὶ ναυσὶν ὀγδοήκοντα θρασέως ἐκ τῆς πόλεως τὸν ἐπίπλουν ἐποιήσατο.
Mindarus, seeing only twenty of Alcibiades' ships approaching, and being unaware of the others, held them in contempt, and boldly made his advance from the city with eighty ships.
ὡς δὲ πλησίον ἐγένετο τῶν περὶ τὸν Ἀλκιβιάδην, οἱ μὲν Ἀθηναῖοι, καθάπερ ἦν αὐτοῖς παρηγγελμένον, προσεποιοῦντο φεύγειν, οἱ δὲ Πελοποννήσιοι περιχαρεῖς ὄντες ἠκολούθουν κατὰ σπουδὴν ὡς νικῶντες.
When he came near Alcibiades' force, the Athenians, as they had been instructed, feigned flight, and the Peloponnesians, full of joy, pursued them in haste as if they were already victorious.
§13.50.3ὁ δὲ Ἀλκιβιάδης ἐπειδὴ τῆς πόλεως αὐτοὺς ἀπέσπασε πορρωτέρω, τὸ σύσσημον ἦρεν· οὗ γενηθέντος αἱ μετʼ Ἀλκιβιάδου τριήρεις ἐξαίφνης πρὸς ἕνα καιρὸν ἐπέστρεψαν ἀντίπρῳροι τοῖς πολεμίοις, Θηραμένης δὲ καὶ Θρασύβουλος ἔπλεον ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν καὶ τὸν ἀπόπλουν τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων ὑπετέμοντο.
And Alcibiades, when he had drawn them further away from the city, raised the signal; upon this, the triremes with Alcibiades suddenly turned all at once to face the enemy prow to prow, while Theramenes and Thrasybulus sailed toward the city and cut off the retreat of the Lacedaemonians.
§13.50.4οἱ δὲ μετὰ τοῦ Μινδάρου καθορῶντες ἤδη τὸ πλῆθος τῶν πολεμίων νεῶν, καὶ μαθόντες ἑαυτοὺς κατεστρατηγημένους, περίφοβοι καθειστήκεισαν.
Those with Mindarus, now beholding the multitude of the enemy's ships and realizing they had been outgeneraled, fell into great fear.
τέλος δὲ τῶν Ἀθηναίων πανταχόθεν ἐπιφαινομένων καὶ τῆς εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἐφόδου τοὺς Πελοποννησίους ἀποκλεισάντων, ὁ Μίνδαρος ἠναγκάσθη καταφυγεῖν τῆς χώρας πρὸς τοὺς καλουμένους Κλήρους, ὅπου καὶ Φαρνάβαζος εἶχε τὴν δύναμιν.
Finally, as the Athenians appeared from all sides and blocked the Peloponnesians from accessing the city, Mindarus was forced to flee to a place in the territory called Cleri, where Pharnabazus also had his force.
§13.50.5Ἀλκιβιάδης δὲ κατὰ σπουδὴν διώκων ἃς μὲν κατέδυεν, ἃς δὲ κατατιτρώσκων ὑποχειρίους ἐλάμβανε, τὰς δὲ πλείστας πρὸς αὐτῇ τῇ γῇ καθωρμισμένας καταλαβὼν ἐπέβαλλε σιδηρᾶς χεῖρας, καὶ ταύταις ἀποσπᾶν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἐπειρᾶτο.
Alcibiades pursued them in haste, sinking some, and capturing others by damaging them, and finding most of them anchored right by the shore, he threw iron grapnels onto them and tried to drag them away from the land.
§13.50.6παραβοηθούντων δὲ τῶν πεζῶν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς τοῖς Πελοποννησίοις πολὺς ἐγένετο φόνος, ὡς ἂν τῶν μὲν Ἀθηναίων διὰ τὸ προτέρημα θρασύτερον ἢ συμφορώτερον ἀγωνιζομένων, τῶν δὲ Πελοποννησίων πολὺ τοῖς πλήθεσιν ὑπεραγόντων· καὶ γὰρ τὸ τοῦ Φαρναβάζου στρατόπεδον παρεβοήθει τοῖς Λακεδαιμονίοις, καὶ τὴν μάχην ἐκ τῆς γῆς ποιούμενον τὴν στάσιν εἶχεν ἀσφαλεστέραν.
But as the infantry from the land came to the aid of the Peloponnesians, a great slaughter took place, inasmuch as the Athenians, because of their advantage, fought more boldly than was expedient, while the Peloponnesians were far superior in numbers; for the army of Pharnabazus also aided the Lacedaemonians, and by fighting from the land, they held a safer position.
§13.50.7Θρασύβουλος δὲ θεωρῶν τοὺς πεζοὺς τοῖς πολεμίοις βοηθοῦντας, καὶ τοὺς λοιποὺς τῶν ἐπιβατῶν ἀπεβίβασεν εἰς τὴν γῆν, σπεύδων βοηθῆσαι τοῖς περὶ τὸν Ἀλκιβιάδην· τῷ δὲ Θηραμένει παρεκελεύσατο τοῖς περὶ Χαιρέαν πεζοῖς συνάψαντα τὴν ταχίστην ἥκειν, ὅπως πεζῇ διαγωνίσωνται.
Thrasybulus, seeing that the infantry were helping the enemy, also disembarked the rest of the marines onto the land, eager to aid Alcibiades' men; and he ordered Theramenes to join forces with the infantry under Chaereas and come as quickly as possible, so that they might decide the issue in a land battle.
