§12.66.1ἅμα δὲ τούτοις πραττομένοις Μεγαρεῖς θλιβόμενοι τῷ πολέμῳ τῷ πρὸς τοὺς Ἀθηναίους καὶ τῷ πρὸς τοὺς φυγάδας· διαπρεσβευομένων δὲ πρὸς ἀλλήλους περὶ τούτων, τῶν πολιτῶν τινες ἀλλοτρίως ἔχοντες πρὸς τοὺς φυγάδας ἐπηγγείλαντο πρὸς τοὺς Ἀθηναίων στρατηγοὺς προδώσειν τὴν πόλιν.
At the same time that these things were being done, the Megarians were hard pressed by the war against the Athenians and by that against the exiles; and while they were sending embassies to one another concerning these matters, some of the citizens who were hostile to the exiles promised the Athenian generals that they would betray the city.
§12.66.2οἱ δὲ στρατηγοί, Ἱπποκράτης τε καὶ Δημοσθένης, συνθέμενοι περὶ τῆς προδοσίας, ἐξέπεμψαν νυκτὸς στρατιώτας ἑξακοσίους εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ οἱ συνθέμενοι παρεδέξαντο τοὺς Ἀθηναίους ἐντὸς τειχῶν.
The generals, Hippocrates and Demosthenes, having agreed upon the betrayal, dispatched six hundred soldiers by night into the city, and those who had made the agreement received the Athenians inside the walls.
καταφανοῦς δὲ τῆς προδοσίας γενομένης κατὰ τὴν πόλιν, καὶ τοῦ πλήθους σχιζομένου κατὰ τὴν αἵρεσιν, καὶ τῶν μὲν συμμαχούντων τοῖς Ἀθηναίοις, τῶν δὲ βοηθούντων τοῖς Λακεδαιμονίοις, ἐκήρυξέ τις ἀφʼ ἑαυτοῦ τοὺς βουλομένους τίθεσθαι τὰ ὅπλα μετὰ Ἀθηναίων καὶ Μεγαρέων.
When the betrayal became manifest throughout the city, and the multitude was divided in their choice, some siding with the Athenians and others running to aid the Lacedaemonians, someone on his own initiative made a proclamation that anyone who wished should take up arms on the side of the Athenians and Megarians.
§12.66.3διόπερ τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων ἐγκαταλείπεσθαι μελλόντων ὑπὸ τῶν Μεγαρέων, συνέβη τοὺς φρουροῦντας τὰ μακρὰ τείχη καταλιπεῖν, εἰς δὲ τὴν καλουμένην Νίσαιαν, ἥπερ ἐστὶν ἐπίνειον τῶν Μεγαρέων, καταφυγεῖν.
Therefore, since the Lacedaemonians were about to be abandoned by the Megarians, it happened that those guarding the Long Walls abandoned them and fled for safety to Nisaea, as it is called, which is the harbor of the Megarians.
§12.66.4περιταφρεύσαντες δὲ αὐτὴν οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι ἐπολιόρκουν· μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἐκ τῶν Ἀθηνῶν τεχνίτας προσλαβόμενοι περιετείχισαν τὴν Νίσαιαν.
The Athenians, having dug a trench around it, began to besiege it; and after this, having brought craftsmen from Athens, they built a wall of circumvallation around Nisaea.
οἱ δὲ Πελοποννήσιοι φοβούμενοι μὴ κατὰ κράτος ἁλόντες ἀναιρεθῶσι, παρέδοσαν τὴν Νίσαιαν τοῖς Ἀθηναίοις καθʼ ὁμολογίαν.
The Peloponnesians, fearing that they might be taken by storm and put to death, surrendered Nisaea to the Athenians by agreement.
καὶ τὰ μὲν κατὰ τοὺς Μεγαρέας ἐν τούτοις ἦν.
Such, then, were the events concerning the Megarians.
