§11.33.1τοιοῦτον δὲ πέρας τῆς μάχης λαβούσης, οἱ μὲν Ἕλληνες τοὺς πεσόντας ἔθαψαν, ὄντας πλείους τῶν μυρίων.
When the battle had reached such a conclusion, the Greeks buried those who had fallen, who were more than ten thousand.
διελόμενοι δὲ τὰ λάφυρα κατὰ τὸν τῶν στρατιωτῶν ἀριθμὸν τὴν περὶ τῶν ἀριστείων κρίσιν ἐποιήσαντο, καὶ Ἀριστείδου κελεύσαντος ἔκριναν ἀριστεῦσαι πόλιν μὲν Σπάρτην, ἄνδρα δὲ Παυσανίαν τὸν Λακεδαιμόνιον.
After dividing the booty according to the number of the soldiers, they made their decision concerning the prize of valor, and at the suggestion of Aristides, they adjudged that among cities Sparta had won the prize of valor, and among men Pausanias the Lacedaemonian.
Ἀρτάβαζος δʼ ἔχων τῶν φευγόντων Περσῶν εἰς τετρακισμυρίους, καὶ διὰ τῆς Φωκίδος εἰς Μακεδονίαν πορευθείς, ὀξυτάταις πορείαις ἐχρῆτο, καὶ ἐσώθη μετὰ τῶν στρατιωτῶν εἰς τὴν Ἀσίαν.
Artabazus, having some forty thousand of the fleeing Persians and proceeding through Phocis into Macedonia, made his march with the greatest speed and escaped safely with his soldiers into Asia.
§11.33.2οἱ δʼ Ἕλληνες ἐκ τῶν λαφύρων δεκάτην ἐξελόμενοι κατεσκεύασαν χρυσοῦν τρίποδα, καὶ ἀνέθηκαν εἰς Δελφοὺς χαριστήριον τῷ θεῷ, ἐπιγράψαντες ἐλεγεῖον τόδε,
"
Ἑλλάδος εὐρυχόρου σωτῆρες τόνδʼ ἀνέθηκαν,
δουλοσύνης στυγερᾶς ῥυσάμενοι πόλιας.
The Greeks, setting aside a tenth of the booty, constructed a golden tripod and dedicated it at Delphi as a thank-offering to the god, inscribing upon it this elegiac couplet: "The saviors of wide-wayed Greece dedicated this, having rescued the cities from hateful slavery.

ἐπέγραψαν δὲ καὶ τοῖς ἐν Θερμοπύλαις ἀποθανοῦσι Λακεδαιμονίοις κοινῇ μὲν ἅπασι τόδε,

μυριάσιν ποτὲ τῇδε διηκοσίαις ἐμάχοντο
ἐκ Πελοποννήσου χιλιάδες τέτορες,
"
ἰδίᾳ δὲ αὐτοῖς τόδε,

ὦ ξεῖνʼ, ἄγγειλον Λακεδαιμονίοις ὅτι τῇδε
κείμεθα τοῖς κείνων πειθόμενοι νομίμοις. "
"And they also inscribed upon the monument of the Lacedaemonians who died at Thermopylae, for all of them in common, this: "Here once with two million did fight four thousand from Peloponnesus, "and for them individually this: "Go, stranger, and tell the Lacedaemonians that here we lie, obeying their laws.
§11.33.3ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ ὁ τῶν Ἀθηναίων δῆμος ἐκόσμησε τοὺς τάφους τῶν ἐν τῷ Περσικῷ πολέμῳ τελευτησάντων, καὶ τὸν ἀγῶνα τὸν ἐπιτάφιον τότε πρῶτον ἐποίησε, καὶ νόμον ἔθηκε λέγειν ἐγκώμια τοῖς δημοσίᾳ θαπτομένοις τοὺς προαιρεθέντας τῶν ῥητόρων.
"In like manner the people of the Athenians also adorned the graves of those who had died in the Persian War, and then for the first time established the funeral games, and passed a law that the chosen orators should deliver the encomiums over those who were buried at public expense.
§11.33.4μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα Παυσανίας μὲν ὁ στρατηγὸς ἀναλαβὼν τὴν δύναμιν ἐστράτευσεν ἐπὶ τὰς Θήβας, καὶ τοὺς αἰτίους τῆς πρὸς Πέρσας συμμαχίας ἐξῄτει πρὸς τὴν τιμωρίαν·
After this, the general Pausanias, taking his army, marched against Thebes and demanded for punishment those who were responsible for the alliance with the Persians.
τῶν δὲ Θηβαίων καταπεπληγμένων τό τε πλῆθος τῶν πολεμίων καὶ τὰς ἀρετάς, οἱ μὲν αἰτιώτατοι τῆς ἀπὸ τῶν Ἑλλήνων ἀποστάσεως ἑκουσίως ὑπομείναντες τὴν παράδοσιν ἐκολάσθησαν ὑπὸ τοῦ Παυσανίου καὶ πάντες ἀνῃρέθησαν.
Since the Thebans were terrified by both the multitude of the enemies and their valor, those who were most responsible for the defection from the Greeks voluntarily submitted to being delivered up and were punished by Pausanias, and all were executed.
