§11.32.1τοῦτον δὲ τὸν τρόπον ἐν τῇ φυγῇ τῶν βαρβάρων σχισθέντων, ὁμοίως καὶ τὸ τῶν Ἑλλήνων πλῆθος διεμερίσθη·
In this manner, while the barbarians were split in their flight, the multitude of the Greeks was likewise divided.
Ἀθηναῖοι μὲν γὰρ καὶ Πλαταιεῖς καὶ Θεσπιεῖς τοὺς ἐπὶ Θηβῶν ὁρμήσαντας ἐδίωξαν, Κορίνθιοι δὲ καὶ Σικυώνιοι καὶ Φλιάσιοι καί τινες ἕτεροι τοῖς μετὰ Ἀρταβάζου φεύγουσιν ἐπηκολούθησαν, Λακεδαιμόνιοι δὲ μετὰ τῶν λοιπῶν τοὺς εἰς τὸ ξύλινον τεῖχος καταφυγόντας διώξαντες ἐπόρθησαν προθύμως.
For the Athenians, Plataeans, and Thespians pursued those who had rushed toward Thebes, while the Corinthians, Sicyonians, Phliasians, and certain others followed after those fleeing with Artabazus, and the Lacedaemonians with the rest, having pursued those who had fled for refuge to the wooden wall, eagerly assailed them.
§11.32.2οἱ δὲ Θηβαῖοι δεξάμενοι τοὺς φεύγοντας καὶ προσαναλαβόντες ἐπέθεντο τοῖς διώκουσιν Ἀθηναίοις·
But the Thebans, receiving the fugitives and rallying them, attacked the pursuing Athenians.
γενομένης δὲ πρὸ τῶν τειχῶν καρτερᾶς μάχης, καὶ τῶν Θηβαίων λαμπρῶς ἀγωνισαμένων, ἔπεσον μὲν οὐκ ὀλίγοι παρʼ ἀμφοτέροις, τὸ δὲ τελευταῖον βιασθέντες ὑπὸ τῶν Ἀθηναίων, συνέφυγον πάλιν εἰς τὰς Θήβας.
When a fierce battle took place before the walls, and the Thebans fought brilliantly, not a few fell on both sides, but in the end, being forced back by the Athenians, they fled for refuge again into Thebes.
§11.32.3μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα οἱ μὲν Ἀθηναῖοι πρὸς τοὺς Λακεδαιμονίους ἀποχωρήσαντες, μετὰ τούτων ἐτειχομάχουν πρὸς τοὺς καταφυγόντας εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν τῶν Περσῶν·
After this, the Athenians, having withdrawn to the Lacedaemonians, with them launched an assault on the wall against those who had fled into the camp of the Persians.
μεγάλου δὲ ἀγῶνος ἐξ ἀμφοτέρων γενομένου, καὶ τῶν μὲν βαρβάρων ἐκ τόπων ὠχυρωμένων καλῶς ἀγωνισαμένων, τῶν δʼ Ἑλλήνων βίαν προσαγόντων τοῖς ξυλίνοις τείχεσι, πολλοὶ μὲν παραβόλως ἀγωνιζόμενοι κατετιτρώσκοντο, οὐκ ὀλίγοι δὲ καὶ τῷ πλήθει τῶν βελῶν διαφθειρόμενοι τὸν θάνατον εὐψύχως ὑπέμενον.
As a great struggle arose on both sides, and while the barbarians fought well from their strongly fortified positions, and the Greeks brought force against the wooden walls, many, fighting recklessly, were wounded, and not a few, destroyed by the multitude of missiles, courageously met their death.
§11.32.4οὐ μήν γε τὴν ὁρμὴν καὶ βίαν τῶν Ἑλλήνων ἔστεγεν οὔτε τὸ κατεσκευασμένον τεῖχος οὔτε τὸ πλῆθος τῶν βαρβάρων, ἀλλʼ ἅπαν τὸ ἀντιτεταγμένον ὑπείκειν ἠναγκάζετο·
Yet neither the constructed wall nor the multitude of the barbarians could withstand the onslaught and force of the Greeks, but everything drawn up against them was compelled to give way.
ἡμιλλῶντο γὰρ πρὸς ἀλλήλους οἱ τῆς Ἑλλάδος ἡγούμενοι Λακεδαιμόνιοι καὶ Ἀθηναῖοι, μεμετεωρισμένοι μὲν ταῖς προγεγενημέναις νίκαις, πεποιθότες δὲ ταῖς ἑαυτῶν ἀρεταῖς.
For the Lacedaemonians and Athenians, the leaders of Greece, rivaled one another, being elated by their past victories and trusting in their own valor.
§11.32.5τέλος δὲ κατὰ κράτος ἁλόντες οἱ βάρβαροι, δεόμενοι ζωγρεῖν οὐδενὸς ἐτύγχανον ἐλέου.
And finally, when the barbarians were taken by storm, though they begged to be taken alive, they received no mercy.
ὁ γὰρ στρατηγὸς τῶν Ἑλλήνων Παυσανίας ὁρῶν τοῖς πλήθεσιν ὑπερέχοντας τοὺς βαρβάρους, εὐλαβεῖτο μή τι παράλογον γένηται, πολλαπλασίων ὄντων τῶν βαρβάρων·
For the general of the Greeks, Pausanias, seeing that the barbarians were superior in numbers, was wary lest some unexpected turn occur, since the barbarians were many times more numerous.
διὸ καὶ παραγγείλαντος αὐτοῦ μηδένα ζωγρεῖν, ταχὺ πλῆθος ἄπιστον νεκρῶν ἐγένετο.
Therefore, when he gave orders to take no one alive, quickly an unbelievable number of dead was made.
τέλος δὲ οἱ Ἕλληνες ὑπὲρ τὰς δέκα μυριάδας τῶν βαρβάρων κατακόψαντες μόγις ἐπαύσαντο τοῦ κτείνειν τοὺς πολεμίους.
And finally, having slaughtered over a hundred thousand of the barbarians, the Greeks with difficulty ceased killing their enemies.
