It is useful to distinguish those of the Greeks who chose the cause of the barbarians, so that, by incurring reproach, they may by their ill repute deter those who might otherwise become traitors to the common liberty.
Now the Aenianes, Dolopes, Malians, Perrhaebians, and Magnetes aligned themselves with the barbarians while the guard at Tempe was still present; but the Achaeans of Phthiotis, the Locrians, the Thessalians, and most of the Boeotians defected to the barbarians after these guards had departed.
The Greeks assembled at the Isthmus voted that those Greeks who voluntarily chose the Persian cause should be tithed to the gods when they succeeded in the war, and to send ambassadors to those who remained quiet to urge them to join in the struggle for their common liberty.
Of these, some sincerely chose the alliance, while others delayed for a considerable time, clinging only to their own safety and waiting for the outcome of the war; but the Argives, having sent ambassadors to the common assembly, promised to join the alliance if they were granted a share in the leadership.
To them the assembly made it clear that if they considered it more terrible to have a Greek general than a barbarian master, they did well to remain quiet, but if they were ambitious to hold the leadership of the Greeks, they must seek such great glory only after having performed deeds worthy of it.
After this, when the ambassadors from Xerxes went about Greece demanding earth and water, all the cities by their replies manifested their zeal for the common liberty.
When Xerxes learned that the Hellespont had been bridged and Athos dug through, he advanced from Sardis, directing his march toward the Hellespont; and when he arrived at Abydos, he led his army across the bridge into Europe.
As he journeyed through Thrace, he took along many soldiers from both the Thracians and the neighboring Greeks.
When he arrived at the place called Doriscus, he summoned his fleet there, so that both forces might be assembled in one place.
He also made a muster of the entire army; the land forces were numbered at more than eighty thousand, and the warships in total were more than twelve hundred, of which three hundred and twenty were Greek, the Greeks furnishing the crews of men and the king providing the vessels; all the rest were numbered as barbarian, and of these the Egyptians furnished two hundred, the Phoenicians three hundred, the Cilicians eighty, the Pamphylians forty, and the Lycians the same number, and in addition to these the Carians eighty, and the Cyprians one hundred and fifty.
Of the Greeks, the Dorians dwelling near Caria, along with the Rhodians and Coans, sent forty ships, the Ionians with the Chians and Samians one hundred, the Aeolians with the Lesbians and Tenedians forty, the Hellespontians eighty along with those dwelling around the Pontus, and the islanders fifty; for the king had already won over the islands within Cyaneae, Triopium, and Sunium.
There were, then, this many triremes in number, and there were eight hundred and fifty horse-transports, and three thousand thirty-rowed boats.
Xerxes, then, was occupied around Doriscus with the muster of his forces.
