When Xanthippus was archon in Athens, the Romans appointed Quintus Fabius Silvanus and Servius Cornelius Tricostus as consuls.
During their term of office, the Persian fleet, except for the Phoenicians, having been defeated after the naval battle at Salamis, remained around Cyme.
Having wintered there, as summer was beginning, they sailed along the coast to Samos in order to keep watch over Ionia; and the total number of ships in Samos was more than four hundred.
These ships, therefore, kept watch over the cities, since they considered that the Ionians were harboring hostile designs.
In Greece, after the naval battle at Salamis, since the Athenians were thought to have been the cause of the victory and for this reason were becoming proud, it became clear to everyone that they were going to dispute the hegemony at sea with the Lacedaemonians; wherefore the Lacedaemonians, foreseeing the future, strove to humble the pride of the Athenians.
For this reason, when a contest for the prize of valor was proposed, they, prevailing through favor, caused the city of the Aeginetans to be judged to have won the prize for valor, and as for individuals, Ameinias the Athenian, the brother of the poet Aeschylus; for he, while commanding a trireme, was the first to ram the Persian flagship, sinking it and killing the admiral.
As the Athenians bore this unjust defeat heavily, the Lacedaemonians, fearing lest Themistocles, being provoked by what had happened, might devise some great evil against them and the Greeks, honored him with gifts double those which the recipients of the prize of valor had received.
But when Themistocles accepted the gifts, the Athenian people removed him from the generalship and handed over the command to Xanthippus, the son of Ariphron.
