I was walking from the Academy straight to the Lyceum, along the road outside the wall, just under the wall itself.
When I came to the postern gate where the spring of Panops is, I met there Hippothales, the son of Hieronymus, and Ctesippus the Paeanian, and other young men with them, standing together in a group.
ἦ δʼ ὅς,
And Hippothales, seeing me approaching, said, "Socrates, whither are you going, and whence come you?" "From the Academy," I said, "I am going straight to the Lyceum." "Come here then," he said, "straight to us.
οὐ παραβάλλεις;
Won't you turn aside?
It is really worth your while." "Where," I said, "do you mean, and who are 'you'?" "Here," he said, showing me an enclosure opposite the wall and an open door.
ἦ δʼ ὅς,
ἔφη,
"We spend our time, he said, there, both ourselves and many other very handsome youths." "And what is this place, and what is your pastime?" "A palaestra," he said, "newly built.
And our pastime consists for the most part in discussions, in which we would gladly let you share." "That is very good of you," I said.
"And who teaches there?" "A companion of yours," he said, "and your admirer, Miccus." "By Zeus," I said, "no ordinary man, but a capable sophist." "Do you wish then to follow us," he said, "that you may see those who are there?" "First, I would gladly hear on what conditions I am to enter, and who is the handsome one." "Each of us," he said, "thinks differently, Socrates." "But who is he to you, Hippothales?
Tell me this." And he, when asked, blushed.
And I said, "Hippothales, son of Hieronymus, you need no longer tell me this, whether you are in love with someone or not; for I know that you are not only in love, but have already advanced far in your love.
I am in other respects useless and of no account, but this gift has somehow been given to me by God, to be able quickly to recognize both a lover and his beloved." And he, hearing this, blushed still more.
ἦ δʼ ὅς,
Then Ctesippus said, "It is a fine thing, he said, that you blush, Hippothales, and hesitate to tell Socrates the name; but if he spends even a little time with you, he will be exhausted by hearing you speak of it constantly.
Indeed, Socrates, he has deafened our ears and filled them with the name of Lysis.
And if he drinks a little, it is easy for us, even when waking up from sleep, to think we hear the name of Lysis.
And what he tells in prose, though terrible, is not so very terrible; but when he attempts to pour over us his poems and compositions!
And what is more terrible than these is that he sings to his beloved in a wonderful voice, which we are forced to endure listening to.
But now, when questioned by you, he blushes." "Lysis is, it seems, quite young," I said, "for I did not recognize the name when I heard it." "Indeed," he said, "they do not call him much by his own name, but he is still called by his father's name because his father is so extremely well known.
ἔφη,
But I am sure you are far from being ignorant of the boy's appearance; for he is sufficient to be recognized from this alone." "Tell me then," I said, "whose son he is." "Democrates' son," he said, "of Aixone, his eldest son."
