§231ΦΑΙ.
PHAEDRUS: You know about my affairs, and you have heard how I think it is to our advantage that these things should happen; and I claim that I should not fail to obtain what I ask, just because I do not happen to be your lover.
For those regret the benefits they have conferred, as soon as they cease from their desire; but for the others, there is no time in which it is proper for them to repent.
For not under compulsion but willingly, as they would best consult for their own affairs, they confer benefits according to their ability.
Furthermore, lovers look at how they have neglected their own interests because of their love, and what benefits they have conferred, and adding the trouble they have had, they think they have long since rendered a worthy return to those they loved; whereas non-lovers can neither plead neglect of their affairs on this account, nor take into account past troubles, nor blame quarrels with their relatives; so that, so many evils being removed, nothing is left for them but to do eagerly whatever they think will please them.
Furthermore, if it is right to value lovers highly for this reason, because they say they love most of all those whom they love, and are ready both in words and in deeds to please their beloved while incurring the hatred of others, it is easy to see, if they speak the truth, that they will value more highly whomever they may love hereafter, and it is clear that, if it pleases those others, they will even treat these badly.
καίτοι πῶς εἰκός ἐστι τοιοῦτον πρᾶγμα προέσθαι τοιαύτην ἔχοντι συμφοράν, ἣν οὐδʼ ἂν ἐπιχειρήσειεν οὐδεὶς ἔμπειρος ὢν ἀποτρέπειν;
And yet, how is it reasonable to surrender such a thing to one who has such a misfortune, which no experienced person would even attempt to avert?
καὶ γὰρ αὐτοὶ ὁμολογοῦσι νοσεῖν μᾶλλον ἢ σωφρονεῖν, καὶ εἰδέναι ὅτι κακῶς φρονοῦσιν, ἀλλʼ οὐ δύνασθαι αὑτῶν κρατεῖν· ὥστε πῶς ἂν εὖ φρονήσαντες ταῦτα καλῶς ἔχειν ἡγήσαιντο περὶ ὧν οὕτω διακείμενοι βουλεύονται;
For they themselves confess that they are sick rather than of sound mind, and that they know they are out of their minds, but cannot control themselves; so how, if they came to their senses, could they think those decisions were good which they made while in such a state?
And again, if you should choose the best from among those who love you, your choice would be from a few; but if from the others you choose the one most suitable for yourself, it would be from many; so that there is much greater hope that the one worthy of your friendship is to be found among the many.
§232ΦΑΙ.
PHAEDRUS: If, then, you fear the established custom, lest if people find out you should incur disgrace, it is likely that lovers, thinking that they are envied by others just as they congratulate themselves, will be elated to talk and, being ambitious, to show off to everyone that their labor has not been in vain; but non-lovers, being masters of themselves, will choose what is best rather than the reputation among men.
Furthermore, it is inevitable that many should hear of and see lovers following their beloved and making this their business, so that whenever they are seen talking to one another, people think they are together because their desire has either been satisfied or is about to be so; whereas they do not even attempt to accuse non-lovers because of their association, knowing that it is necessary to converse with someone either for friendship or for some other pleasure.
And indeed, if fear has come upon you, thinking that it is difficult for friendship to endure, and that while in any other way if a quarrel arises the misfortune is common to both, but if you have surrendered what you value most highly, a great harm would happen to you, you would naturally fear lovers more; for many are the things that vex them, and they think everything happens to their own injury.
For this reason they even prevent their beloveds from associating with others, fearing that those who possess property will surpass them in wealth, and that those who are educated will prove superior in intelligence; and they guard against the power of anyone who possesses any other advantage.
If they persuade you, then, to alienate yourself from these people, they reduce you to a state destitute of friends; but if, looking to your own interest, you are wiser than they, you will come to a quarrel with them.
But those who happen not to be lovers, but have obtained their request because of their merit, would not be jealous of those who associate with you, but would rather hate those who are unwilling, thinking that they are looked down upon by the latter, but benefited by those who associate with you, so that there is much greater hope that friendship rather than enmity will result for them from this affair.
