§52ΣΩ.
ταύταις δή φαμεν καὶ σέ, ὦ Σώκρατες, ταῖς αἰτίαις ἐνέξεσθαι, εἴπερ ποιήσεις ἃ ἐπινοεῖς, καὶ οὐχ ἥκιστα Ἀθηναίων σέ, ἀλλʼ ἐν τοῖς μάλιστα. εἰ οὖν ἐγὼ εἴποιμι· διὰ τί δή; ἴσως ἄν μου δικαίως καθάπτοιντο λέγοντες ὅτι ἐν τοῖς μάλιστα Ἀθηναίων ἐγὼ αὐτοῖς ὡμολογηκὼς τυγχάνω ταύτην τὴν ὁμολογίαν.
Socrates: "We say, Socrates, that you above all will be subject to these charges, if you carry out what you intend, and not least of the Athenians, but most of all." If I should then say, "Why is that?" they might perhaps justly attack me, saying that I happen to have agreed to this agreement with them more than any other of the Athenians.
φαῖεν γὰρ ἂν ὅτι
ὦ Σώκρατες, μεγάλα ἡμῖν τούτων τεκμήριά ἐστιν, ὅτι σοι καὶ ἡμεῖς ἠρέσκομεν καὶ ἡ πόλις·
For they would say: "Socrates, we have great proofs of this, that we and the city pleased you.
οὐ γὰρ ἄν ποτε τῶν ἄλλων Ἀθηναίων ἁπάντων διαφερόντως ἐν αὐτῇ ἐπεδήμεις εἰ μή σοι διαφερόντως ἤρεσκεν, καὶ οὔτʼ ἐπὶ θεωρίαν πώποτʼ ἐκ τῆς πόλεως ἐξῆλθες, ὅτι μὴ ἅπαξ εἰς Ἰσθμόν, οὔτε ἄλλοσε οὐδαμόσε, εἰ μή ποι στρατευσόμενος, οὔτε ἄλλην ἀποδημίαν ἐποιήσω πώποτε ὥσπερ οἱ ἄλλοι ἄνθρωποι, οὐδʼ ἐπιθυμία σε ἄλλης πόλεως οὐδὲ ἄλλων νόμων ἔλαβεν εἰδέναι, ἀλλὰ ἡμεῖς σοι ἱκανοὶ ἦμεν καὶ ἡ ἡμετέρα πόλις·
For you would never have stayed in it so preeminently compared to all other Athenians if it had not pleased you preeminently, and you never went out of the city to a festival, except once to the Isthmus, nor anywhere else, unless to go on a military campaign, nor did you ever make any other journey like other people, nor did a desire seize you to know another city or other laws, but we and our city were sufficient for you.
οὕτω σφόδρα ἡμᾶς ᾑροῦ καὶ ὡμολόγεις καθʼ ἡμᾶς πολιτεύσεσθαι, τά τε ἄλλα καὶ παῖδας ἐν αὐτῇ ἐποιήσω, ὡς ἀρεσκούσης σοι τῆς πόλεως.
So strongly did you choose us and agree to live as a citizen under us; and moreover, you begot children in it, showing that the city pleased you.
ἔτι τοίνυν ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ δίκῃ ἐξῆν σοι φυγῆς τιμήσασθαι εἰ ἐβούλου, καὶ ὅπερ νῦν ἀκούσης τῆς πόλεως ἐπιχειρεῖς, τότε ἑκούσης ποιῆσαι.
Furthermore, in the trial itself, it was open to you to propose exile as your punishment if you wished, and what you are now attempting to do against the will of the city, you could have done then with its consent.
σὺ δὲ τότε μὲν ἐκαλλωπίζου ὡς οὐκ ἀγανακτῶν εἰ δέοι τεθνάναι σε, ἀλλὰ ᾑροῦ, ὡς ἔφησθα, πρὸ τῆς φυγῆς θάνατον·
But at that time you prided yourself on not being distressed if you had to die, but you chose, as you said, death instead of exile.
νῦν δὲ οὔτʼ ἐκείνους τοὺς λόγους αἰσχύνῃ, οὔτε ἡμῶν τῶν νόμων ἐντρέπῃ, ἐπιχειρῶν διαφθεῖραι, πράττεις τε ἅπερ ἂν δοῦλος ὁ φαυλότατος πράξειεν, ἀποδιδράσκειν ἐπιχειρῶν παρὰ τὰς συνθήκας τε καὶ τὰς ὁμολογίας καθʼ ἃς ἡμῖν συνέθου πολιτεύεσθαι.
But now you are neither ashamed of those words, nor do you respect us, the laws, since you attempt to destroy us, and you act as the meanest slave would act, attempting to run away contrary to the contracts and agreements under which you agreed with us to live as a citizen.
πρῶτον μὲν οὖν ἡμῖν τοῦτʼ αὐτὸ ἀπόκριναι, εἰ ἀληθῆ λέγομεν φάσκοντές σε ὡμολογηκέναι πολιτεύσεσθαι καθʼ ἡμᾶς ἔργῳ ἀλλʼ οὐ λόγῳ, ἢ οὐκ ἀληθῆ. τί φῶμεν πρὸς ταῦτα, ὦ Κρίτων;
First, then, answer us this very question: whether we speak the truth when we say that you agreed to live as a citizen under us in deed and not in word, or not." What shall we say to this, Crito?
ἄλλο τι ἢ ὁμολογῶμεν;
Can we do anything else than agree?
ΚΡ. ἀνάγκη, ὦ Σώκρατες.
Crito: We must, Socrates.
ΣΩ.
ἄλλο τι οὖν,
ἂν φαῖεν,
ἢ συνθήκας τὰς πρὸς ἡμᾶς αὐτοὺς καὶ ὁμολογίας παραβαίνεις, οὐχ ὑπὸ ἀνάγκης ὁμολογήσας οὐδὲ ἀπατηθεὶς οὐδὲ ἐν ὀλίγῳ χρόνῳ ἀναγκασθεὶς βουλεύσασθαι, ἀλλʼ ἐν ἔτεσιν ἑβδομήκοντα, ἐν οἷς ἐξῆν σοι ἀπιέναι, εἰ μὴ ἠρέσκομεν ἡμεῖς μηδὲ δίκαιαι ἐφαίνοντό σοι αἱ ὁμολογίαι εἶναι.
Socrates: "Are you then doing anything else," they would say, "than violating the contracts and agreements with us, not having agreed under compulsion, nor having been deceived, nor having been forced to decide in a short time, but over seventy years, during which it was permitted to you to depart if we did not please you or if the agreements did not seem to you to be just?"
