Well then: I must indeed defend myself, men of Athens, and must attempt to remove from you this slander, which you have held for a long time, in so short a time.
I should indeed wish that this might happen so, if it is at all better for both you and me, and that I might achieve something more by my defense.
But I think this is difficult, and I am not at all unaware of what kind of task it is.
Nevertheless, let this go as is pleasing to the god, but the law must be obeyed and I must defend myself.
Let us take up then from the beginning what the accusation is from which my slander has arisen, trusting in which indeed Meletus brought this indictment against me.
εἶεν· τί δὴ λέγοντες διέβαλλον οἱ διαβάλλοντες;
Well then: saying what indeed did the slanderers slander me?
Just as if they were formal accusers, we must read their sworn deposition: "Socrates is guilty of wrongdoing and is overly curious, searching into things under the earth and in heaven, and making the weaker argument the stronger, and teaching others these same things." It is something of this sort.
For you yourselves saw these things in the comedy of Aristophanes—a certain Socrates being carried around there, claiming that he walks on air and talking a lot of other nonsense, of which I understand nothing, either much or little.
And I do not say this to dishonor such knowledge, if anyone is wise about such things—may I not somehow be prosecuted by Meletus on so many charges!—but indeed, men of Athens, I have no share in these things.
And again, I offer the majority of you as witnesses, and I ask you to instruct and tell one another, as many of you as have ever heard me conversing—and there are many of you of this sort. Tell one another, then, if any of you has ever heard me conversing about such things, either to a small or a great extent, and from this you will know that the other things that the multitude say about me are of the same sort.
But indeed, none of these things is true, nor indeed if you have heard from anyone that I attempt to educate people and demand money, is that true either.
Although this too indeed seems to me to be a fine thing, if someone should be able to educate people like Gorgias of Leontini and Prodicus of Ceos and Hippias of Elis.
